Film The Redcafe Movie review thread

Lady Bird is fantastic. Hit a ton of nerves with me, and actually laughed out loud at numerous points (which is unusual even in films that are straight comedies), particularly the "bartering" line from Chalamet. Ronan and Metcalf both perfect in their roles (and the Dad). I can see why some wouldn't hit it off with it though.

They were all excellent. Especially the dad. I also laughted at the bartering line. Just found the whole thing a bit insubstantial. Not funny enough to work as a comedy and not enough depth to work as something more profound. Kind of falls between two stools. I didn’t dislike it though. Kind of wish I’d watched it with lower expectations tbh.

Game Over, Man

Netflix trash comedy with the 3 guys from Workaholics being the guys from Workaholics in a different line of work, with more graphic violence, and way more dicks that I expected. Seriously. So many dicks. Very funny if you like dumb slacker comedy.

Blockers -

Part Gross-out movie, part coming of age movie; basically an American Pie for Millenials with a feminist tilt. Some laugh out loud moments and the sentimental parts aren't overdone. I don't know if there were scenes cut or just bad editing in places but it felt a little disjointed to me at times.

7/10

Pacific Rim: Uprising
2/10.

Horrible plot. The bloody Kaijus didn't even turn up until the last 15 mins or so. The protagonist was awful and the kids were all overacting. In fact, 2/10 is being very generous for that absolute shite piece of work.
Cannot believe I was convinced to see it.

Damnit! I love these monster movies.

Well, steer clear of this one then. Woeful.

They can't make monster movies anymore. I sometimes revisit the Godzilla movies (not the American dross, the Japanese), but the effects are horrible.

Yeah. The Jurassic Park original was awesome. They have started getting worse with better effects.

The American Godzilla's suck because they focus more on the humans than the absolute GOAT monster that is Godzilla, they even threw some silly romances in there for good measure.

Seems like they've done the same thing in PR: Uprising, focusing on a bunch of teens that no one gives a shit about, we want to see Kaiju ffs.

Yup. The stupid teens were pretty pointless. Still don't get what is it that they were trying to achieve with this sequel.

The shape of water - How the hell did this turd win best film? So fecking uneventful, only thing good about it is Shannon's performance. 5/10

Lady Bird was a film everyone's seen but just done a lot better than other films of that ilk. I reckon it'll be highly re-watchable.

Of course, once upon a time, bittersweet nostalgic teen dramas weren't nominated for the major awards etc. (I think) but we do live in an infantilised age when the aforementioned fish-fecking film is seen as serious political art.

Sharknado 2: The Second One

Cant believe I had not seen this before.
What's not to like , flying man eating sharks , alligators in the subways, killer storm, snow, the head to the statue of Liberty rolling down the street, playing Frogger with the shart heads, flaming sharks falling from the sky, OH yes and a big Chainsaw and to top it off Tara Reid with a circular saw in place of her hand , had they been watching the Evil Dead  and that ending !!

Love it from start to finish.
what else but

10/10

Best movie in that genre is Piranha 3D.

Harper - Paul Newman doing what he does best. Being both, suave and silver tongued with ease. All while surrounded by gorgeous looking women. Great cast with a decent crime plot. Good stuff.

Did you like the first one?

Yeah. The Jurassic Park original was awesome. They have started getting worse with better effects.
Monsters is pretty good. It is by the guy that made Godzilla and it focuses on the humans, but it was done right. Also loved Cloverfield.

Monies. That is all.

Game Over, Man!
Apart from one or two bits, this was mostly an unfunny waste of time. Hated it. So fecking boring. Crazy how the female antagonist looks exactly like Kate Beckinsale though 2/10

Mute

A mute bartender goes up against his city's gangsters in an effort to find out what happened to his missing partner. By David Bowies' son Duncan Jones. Think this dude is a fraud. Moon was great. Source Code didn't live up to its' fantastic screenplay. Warcraft was totally stupid and this is a pute borefest. Clearly trying to be the next Blade Runner but it had a hero with zero charm, a slow plodding narrative and stupid shit happening for the sake of it. Paul Rudd was the only thing I liked about this crap... actually, parts of the film looked nice also 3/10

Wrinkle in Time.
I went to see this movie without knowing what it was about. I felt like I had taken drugs. It was a whole lot of wtf? is happening. Im sure some will like it, but it was easily the worst movie ive seen in the cinema this year.

Thats why I didnt mind the recent Kong movie. It basically showed Kong from the getgo whereas the godzilla one had like teases of it before the ending.
Actually now that i think of it, Kong probably only had like 15 minutes. But at least the characters were adults whereas in Godzilla, the main adult (who was focused on in the trailers) was gone straight away.

Best bit about it was Robert Hays flying the plane.

How have you not seen this until now?!

I dont know  I have them all sat on my HDD and they have been there for ages, just forgot about them.

I've only seen part of the second one, most enduring memory is when a guy gets eaten by a shark but manages to cut his way through the shark while inside it with a chainshaw, before conveniently landing unhurt on a building unhurt. I didn't make that up...did I?

Guys and Dolls - Good fun, though Sinatra and Blaine felt kinda superfluous, a more trimmed down running length with them pushed aside as supporting characters with the focus solely being on Brando and Simmons would have been much better. Still, good fun was had by all.

Wow, youve got some catching up to do!

Tomb Raider. The first act of this has its problems but it has its charms too, and I really thought it was going to win me over when Lu Ren turned up with his boat and such. But then they actually reach the island and the film loses control of whether it wants to focus on character or plot, and ends up juggling both pretty uncomfortably until you're left with a film that doesn't know how to prioritise anything correctly. Not terrible, and Vikander is decent, it's just barely anything at all. 5/10.

The Villainess (2017)

Available on Netflix. A sub-titled South Korean martial arts flick about a female protagonist enlisted by an elite government organisation and trained to be a top assassin and serve her mandatory 10 years carrying out secret missions for them. She has her own agenda though....to kill the guys who murdered her father and strive for normality with her young daughter but only to find danger and deception lurking around every corner.

From the opening sequence, the director showcases what he can do. Cross Hardcore Henry with The Raid and the Crazy 88 sequence from Kill Bill (I swear her father's death scene later in the film is almost identical to the animation sequence in Kill Bill too) and that pretty much sums up the opening 5 minutes where the body count is on a level rarely seen in movies...it's insane!

After it's blistering start though, the film undulates between slow story and sporadic action, losing it's way toward the middle as it gets bogged down with a messy plot that robs the film of it's momentum and cohesion. Without the sanitization of Hollywood productions, these Asian films just have that rawness that cannot be replicated elsewhere.

Some of the action sequences are shot in first person style, which for those that watched Hardcore Henry will be something they're familiar with. That being said, they are well executed. However, the slicing and dicing is actually not as graphic as it could be, but I'm guessing with the excessive body count, the budget would have gone through the roof. The innovative use of cameras creates a distinctive visual style in places, particularly showcased in the motorcycle chase and bus sequences. While expertly choreographed and executed, the action sequences still manage to create that random brawling effect that adds to the natural feel that Hollywood can never create. However those high octane moments are few and far between, sadly.

The movie starts off being a real ball-buster but settles into a story about a woman haunted by memories of her past and trying to make sense of the high stakes world she has been embroiled in for most of her formative years, where the things she loves always get snatched away from her. The lead actress does her job really well and you find yourself believing in her more as the film progresses. The finale is well worth the wait too, again with some more crazy camera work and amazing stunts.

If only there was more of that, The Villainess would have been a great movie. Instead it ends up being a decent watch that is probably good for a few re-runs. For me, The Raid will always be the film by which others are judged and this one sadly fails to hit that mark, potential though it had.

I'm giving this a 7/10.

Naked - Christ. Great film but not sure if I ever want to watch it again. Opens with our protagonist raping a woman in an alley and gets more oppressive and brutal from there. Striking to say the least.
