Film The Redcafe Movie review thread

Watched Mommie Dearest, a notorious movie about Joan Crawford and her adopted children. What's missing from this Grand Guignol portrayal is Crawford's awful history of being used and abused by men...and not merely Hollywood men. In a strange way, the film is an analogue to the brilliant Sunset Boulevard. Still, let's all gawp at the 'mad' women, Norma Desmond and Joan...

Villainness

Absolutely fecking brilliant. A hyperviolent South-Asian action flick on the level of The Raid 1&2, but only with more depth and story. The camerawork is out of this world, how it changes between first persion view and traditional view is great. Also the acting is superb. The story is centered around a female assasin who gets recruited by a shadow branch of the Thai secret service, and how she tries to balance the remnants of her personal life with her role. The story is both a drama, love story and classical revenge style non-stop action. The choreography is great, and almost on par with The Raid.

Some of the best stuff I've seen lately.

9/10
I like the sound of this. Is it as fast-paced as Raid?

No it is not as fast paced as the Raid. It is more story and character based, even though it is an action movie.

The action is raw and brutal though. The movie opens with a 7 minutes long kung-fu and knife scene filmed in first person view, with very graphic South-Korea style violence.

I highly recommend it.

Thanks, I guess Raid is in a league of its own when it comes to incessant action tbf.
Will defo check it out though, used to be a massive fan of Asian cinema.

Have you seen any of their other films? I loved Good Time but haven't got around to watching their other stuff, might remedy that this week.

Glad you liked Raw too.
Yeah, the junkie drama Heaven Knows What. It's a little rough around the edges but another really nice and authentic NYC depiction. Panic in Needle Park anno 2014.

They really need to come up with better titles for their movies though.

Raw was very good, would make a great double billing with Thelma. Raw being the more humorous version and Thelma the more muted one.
Is this the French one about the cannibals?
Just seen GoodFellas for the first time, great film.
Jealous you got to discover it so late, brilliant film.

The Disaster Artist is entertaining, and Franco is very good in it, but it’s a little empty and ultimately a bit pointless if you’re not already a Room obsessive*. The book was really interesting, and full a lot more sinister Tommyisms, but they skirt over all but the most obvious here in an attempt to get him onside with the whole thing (and wheel him out for the promotion)

This was basically just an excuse for Franco & friends to remake some scenes from The Room and pal around with Wiseau, taking the mick just enough to stay on his good side. They clearly want it to be like Ed Wood or Bowfinger (which they crib the ending from without really earning it) but as a consequence of trying to be “in” on the joke, it’s ultimately a little frothy and unsatisfactory. Dave Franco is also completely out of place as a poorly dyed fake bearded Sestero. As are the needless introductory talking heads.

Fun, but not the award worthy love letter to misguided ambition it wants to be. A Sunday evening 7/10. Ed Wood and Bowfinger are better.

*There was also a bit in our screening when a sizeable section of the audience let out an audible gasp when they showed him watching the “tearing me apart” speech from Rebel Without a Cause. Which I just found incredibly depressing. And tbf, it was around then I stared losing my appreciation for “the joke”.

Yeah, very good. Debut film by the director (female) as well, one to follow.
Definitely. At the moment I'm feeling that I only want to watch horror movies that are made by or is about women. I think women for the most part have better sensibility when it comes to horror movies and I mostly look for recommendations from female critics.

O Sangue - A belter of a debut feature. I much prefer this style to Pedro Costa's later efforts (In Vanda's Room, Colossal Youth) which I didn't like that much. T'was like a lush Bela Tarr movie by way of Jacques Tourneur. You should check it out if you haven't already @Peyroteo

I will, thanks. I've been on a portuguese movie spree recently so this is perfect.

Outrageous sexism :nono:

I just watched this doc by Jon Alpert.

Really, really good watch about petty criminals in New York.

Seen the Babadook?

Tower Block
Several months after witnessing a murder, residents of Tower Block 31 find themselves being picked off by a sniper, pitting those lucky enough to be alive into a battle for survival. Didn't realize that this was directed by my mates boyfriend so I gave it a watch. Was decent. The story was engaging enough and the performances were good for the most part, especially Jack O'Connell. You can tell it's low budget, which hampered it a bit but not bad for a first effort 6.5/10

Kingsman: The Golden Circle

People been hating on this but I thought it was ok. Some funny moments, good action scenes, decent sound track and Julianne Moore  Thought it didn't need to be 2 hours and 20 minutes, which is faaaar too long for what it is but it was enjoyable enough 6/10

Nine Lives

A businessman (Kevin Spacey) falls off a sky scraper and becomes a cat. Now he has to find a way to become his bellend self again. Not really funny or enjoyable for either kids or adults. Just paint by the numbers studio fluff. Avoid 2/10

Within

A thriller centered around a widower who moves into a seemingly perfect new home with his daughter and new wife... then some spooky shit goes down. Started very slow, which I like in a horror IF there's a good pay off, which this didn't have. Once they reveal what's going on, it becomes quite cliched and non-sensicle. It did have some creepy moments and tense scares but overall, it's quite forgettable 5.5/10

This is what happens to your career after you care caught feeling up half of Hollywood.

How the f*ck do you pitch a movie like that?!?

"So there's a guy who falls off a building...annnnd he turns into a cat. That's it."

Question about metacritic and the like, I've noticed the last few films I've looked up their expert reviewers or whatever are female and seem to give it a shit score? Then the user reviews seem generally male and give it positive? Maybe it was rotten tomatoes at the brunt of it. Anyway to filter?

Seems women watching guy films is gonna go tits up and vice versa, obv as a dude I never bothered looking at the girl films or TV series. Is it the same for women? The male critics slamming stuff women like left right and centre?

Star Wars: The Last Jedi - solid entry, definitely up there with the best Star Wars has to offer. Adam Driver is great, Mark Hammil gives his best performance in the series. Some terrific visuals, especially the salt flats. John Boyega still bugs me. There are some gaping holes here and there and the characters have the Game of Thrones like ability to be wherever they need to be very quickly. Its plot is fairly insignificant, a symptom of being the middle film in a trilogy.

People will probably pull this apart like they did The Force Awakens, but given what most of the films in the series have been like, this is as good as you're going to get. So if you want to buy in, enjoy it.

Metacritic doesn't have expert reviewers, and the majority of their professional critics are male, so if anything the bias would go the other way. I don't think user reviews are even worth looking at, given they're often a battle between who can post more tens or zeros.

 mine too

it's very soppy, but well made to be fair, and the kid is great.

Pretty much. It would be an easy film to be quite cynical about (and i can see why people would be) but I wasn't in the mood to be cynical and thus just embraced the film for what it was, and ended up enjoying it.

Oh and we didn't cry of course, because we're men... who make fire.

Julianne Moore is 100 years old. You named yourself well!
