I think thats fair. I also think they focused on the wrong person as main character esp when you watch the trailer. One thing Kong got right was the use of ... Kong. Godzilla movie needed more Godzilla.
Watched three movies yeterday:
Power Rangers: 9/10 (as a fan and nostalgia). If I wasnt a fan I might have given it 6/10 given its an origin story. I really really hope theres a follow up / sequel.
Smurfs: 6/10. Had some good moments.
Boss Baby: 8/10 - Had some good laugh out moments and was a nice take on a story. Its a cartoon so if you dont take it seriously (like some critics seem to do for some bizarre reason), then you will find it really enjoyable.

Yeah, the movie had great strengths (Godzilla, Watanabe and Cranston). Trouble was it ignored them for a large chunk of the film in favour of it's weakest plot and character.
Fate Of The Furious
A meathead's wet dream, gave me what i expected. Cars, stunts, booty and laughable dialogue. Jason Statham was the stand out star. Helen Mirren was terrible. Charlize Theron is the hottest woman alive 9/10
Couldn't find the Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them thread for the life of me and can't be arsed starting a new thread - Jude Law has been cast as young Dumbledore for the sequel.
Kong: Skull Island was surprisingly pretty great. Well, great may be an exaggeration in the grand scheme, but it was far better than it had any right or reason to be. More 'great' like Pacific Rim, only without the high camp, consumerist shame or Charlie Hunnam...Or Jurassic World, without the slow dawning realisation you've been suckered by nostalgia.
In fact the first half of the movie is genuinely good. The too large but mostly "too good to be in this" cast help to sell the early "why aren't we on the island yet?" set up scenes, and the period setting allows for some enjoyable (if obvious) genre nods, thematic allusions and soundtrack picks. It's quite blatantly been pitched as 'Apocaplyse Now meets Jurassic Park', spelled out explicitly by two character names and one crowd pleasing Sam. L line of dialogue*, but it somehow largely works.
The second half falls flat into B movie territory, and Hiddlestone & Larsson are fairly pointless expenses when Jackson, Goodman and Reily provide 3/4s of all the actual "acting", but it does more than enough than it needs to, and looks good doing it.
As a braindead blockbuster, it's better than virtually all the big recent franchise reboots. A strong 7 in general terms, an easy 8.5 in genre ones.

"Hold onto your butts" actually elicited cheers from the half full south London cineworld I saw it in..Admittely no more than about 4. But that's the English cinema etiquette equivalent of at least 50 in American terms.
I saw this again last night. Still very funny after all these years. Streisland, despite, or perhaps because of the nose, was great. If ever a human being was born to play a rabbit, it was her. Ryan O'Neal, who might kindly be described as an actor of limited range, was perfect for the role. He looked like a man who couldn't remember where he'd left his trousers all through the picture.

Interesting. I saw this a week after watching Logan and thought - as reboots go - this was a pale comparison. Cinematography, effects and (especially) sound design were very good. Some of the acting was solid too. But the script, my god the script... I've heard more convincing dialogue in Michael Bay movies. And that's a big problem, even in a braindead blockbuster.
In pursuit of buried treasure, a group of fortune hunters unearth an ancient demonic summoning stone that holds a terrible curse and awakens a timeless evil, the Krampus. After centuries of slumber, Krampus has awoken with a thirst for blood.
Just no , why cant they make a decent Krampus film , there is a decent story in there, just not this one.
Lasted 20 mins and nothing happened.
ZERO.
Aftermath
Two strangers' lives become inextricably bound together after a devastating plane crash. Inspired by actual events,
Arnold Schwarzenegger not in his normal action film role but for me one of his best.
Aftermath is a simple film about life after losing a family and revenge.
It is a slow film but well made and the acting was good.
Not my normal film , but I thought it was excellent.
7.5/10
Asylum of Darkness
After awakening in a mental asylum, a patient plans an escape to freedom, but finds an even more disturbing, supernatural world on the outside, one that threatens to keep him trapped in madness forever.
Utter shite. I could not make head nor tail of it.
ZERO
The Autopsy of Jane Doe
A father and son, both coroners, are pulled into a complex mystery while attempting to identify the body of a young woman, who was apparently harboring dark secrets.
Brain Cox and Emile Hirash both excellent that farther and son.
One of the best horrors I have seen for a while, far better than I expected.

Ours in the last year has let a bike be nicked, someone walk into the factory and steal from people's jackets, and again last week someone hopped a fence and somehow got through a coded door. Also a lad went missing half way through shift and his car had gone from the car park so i asked the security guard what time the lad left, he didn't know anyone had left and couldn't work the cameras to find out.

Dont really do security, I just make sure your cornflakes and Pringles get to the right places.
Easy to get though a coded door , just wait till shift change over and hang around and them follow somebody in.

Thank you for your service for making sure i get my pringles for when i watch movies and play games though, they're much needed. Not all heroes wear capes. Or do you?

Nope no cape here, and yes cornflakes are still going, Crunchy Nut are the best. Kelloggs sell more cereal bars and other stuff now, including Pringles.
In the near future, when communications go offline at a remote nuclear power plant isolated in the desert, a young safety inspector, Abby Dixon, is forced to fly out to bring them back online. Once inside the facility, mysterious clues and strange behaviors cause Abby to have doubts about the sanity, and perhaps identities, of the two employees onsite.
Low budget Sci-Fi, it was not a classic but very watchable.
Most of the film just has the 2 main leads Sarah Habel and Dominic Monaghan who were both OK.
5/10
Be Afraid
Not long after John Chambers and his family arrive at their new home in a small country town of Pennsylvania, John begins to experience sleep paralysis. Lying there paralyzed, trapped ...
It was OK , nothing that has not been done before.
4.5/10
Bedeviled
Five friends are terrorized by a supernatural entity after downloading a mysterious app.
It had it moments, but not many, pretty run of the mill scary jump stuff.
The ending was very predicable.
Average at best.
5/10
Bethany
Claire and her husband find themselves moving back into Claire's childhood home only to have the abusive and traumatic memories of her mother come back to haunt her. As her husband starts to get more work, Claire finds herself mixed up in a fog of past and present with a mysterious figure haunting her memories. What is this small figure that is trying to reach out to her, and what does it want?
I enjoyed this, the acting was good , well written with a twist at the end I never saw coming.
6.5/10
my last one for a night shift and the best.
Dead Silence
A young widower returns to his hometown to search for answers to his wife's murder, which may be linked to the ghost of a murdered ventriloquist.
Directed by James Wan, so I was expecting a decent film.
Started well, the dummy was creepy.
The storyline is original enough, and the creepy themes and atmospheric setting add to its overall effect. Don't expect a gore fest though, because the violence is pretty tame compared to what you'd see in the "Saw" films. If you like James Wan and Leigh Whannell's work, then you will like this.
It has a few flaws here and there, but it's such an enjoyable movie that all of that is forgivable in the end and again I did not see the twist at the end
I definitely saved the best till last.
Fast and Furious 8 - 6/10
I like the series and thought that F&F 7 was pretty good. This was pretty lame. Bad acting, cheesy dialogue, dumb story, predictable scenes, unnecessary segments. The action was good and Jason Statham and the Rock's trash talk was the highlight of the show for me. Do yourself a favour and not watch this in the cinema.

I gave this a 9 but that was hyperbole, 6 sounds about right. For me, it's worse than 7,6,5 & 1 but better than 3, 2 & 4.
Ghost In The Shell
Visually stunning, loved the futuristic metropolis look of Japan, great action scenes too but a shell of a story with no character development meant it was all style and no substance, which is a crime considering the source material. Don't think of enjoy it as much at the home screen but in the cinema, i thought the visual style was worth the admission fee 6/10
I haven't seen the new version, but the original (anime at least) always felt like half a story. Or 2/3rds of one at best. Its a great opening two acts and then ends just as you think it's about to push on. I always felt more impressed than satisfied with it.
After a young woman is kidnapped, her captors soon come to realize that in fact they may be the ones in danger and this young woman has a dark secret inside her.
A possession film, they is some decent parts in it , there is also some bad acting, but it is watchable, not the worst possession film I have seen.
4/10
Dont Kill It
When an ancient demon is accidentally unleashed in a sparsely populated Mississippi town of Chickory Creek, their only hope of survival lies in the hands of a grizzled old demon hunter Jebediah Woodley and his reluctant partner FBI agent Evelyn Pierce.
I had to check to see if this was a comedy horror, it was not, maybe it should have been.
Dolph Lundgren plays Woodley the old demon hunter and he was pretty good.
horrible script full of plot holes and corny dialogues, a ton of bloody gory action screen enough to satisfied any horror fan
If you like gory and blood and your horror on the funny side, you have to watch this.
7/10
First Born
A young couples lives are turned upside down when the birth of their first child is accompanied by terrifying entities that threaten their newly formed family.
A low budget British Horror I did not like this , slow, boring never really got going.
I wanted to like it, there was the basis for a very good film.

The movie is shocking. One of the few times I've grabbed my phone in a cinema out of boredom. Myself and the partner hated it, she wanted to walk out 60 mins in. It was honestly 1/10.

Nic Cage, I like Cage has you know, but I am only 10 mins in to it , Cage has not even been on the screen yet and already I am like WTF I am I watching, normally I would be turning it off by now , but I have to carry on.
Troy (Nicolas Cage), Mad Dog (Willem Dafoe), and Diesel (Christopher Matthew Cook) are all part of a crew of ex-cons are hired by a Cleveland mafioso to kidnap the baby of a rival mobster.
Is this a bad film , is this maybe the worst film I have seen Cage in, OMG yes it is dreadful, but did I enjoy it Hell yeah I did , it was CAGE.
They have kidnapped a baby and are worried about a baby seat
All 3 are just idiots
Only watch this is you are a Cage fan and even then don't expect anything even remotely good.

All I remember from the anime is the bit where she jumps of the building on the motorbike that Matrix completely copied. I do recall it was a bit baffling though. I've still got it on VHS, but have long since ditched my video.

An evening of drunken prank calls becomes a nightmare for a pair of teenagers when a mysterious stranger turns their own game against them...with deadly consequences.
I liked this , 2 punks get what is due to them for pranking others.
It has some intense and scary moments. Love the twists.
It not a classic by any means , but it is worth watching if only once.
Three friends stumble upon the horrific origins of a mysterious figure they discover is the root cause of the evil behind unspeakable acts.
I was recommended this has being scary, but I was massively disappointed.
Just another , don't say the name films , Candy Man did it better.
It was not awful, but could have been done better.
