Film The Redcafe Movie review thread

Check out Lucas Moodysson´s Container. Moodysson went from making very accessible films like Fcuking Amal and especially Togetherness, and then really went over to the dark side and began making some creepy, freaky, stream of consciousness experimental stuff like Container.

I really need to get round watching this one and A Hole in My Heart one day.
Fun fact, I walk on Passeio de Manoel de Oliveira (a sidewalk named after him) everyday to go to university.

I've also seen his 1942 classic Aniki Bóbó and the more recent Singularidades de uma rapariga loura.

I've toyed with the idea of watching one of his films but he doesn't seem to have an obvious starting point.

Daughters of Darkness - More enjoyable than The Hunger, still pretty trashy though with some really dodgy acting and dialogues, but it also had some occasional high-minded throwaways and Delphine Seyrig was just delightfully devilish as the Marlene Dietr-ish lesbian vampire. Nice score too.

Watch something else on your computer instead.

I had the guy who edited Full Metal Jacket as a guest teacher last year, at one point I poured him a cup of coffee and told him that I thought Full Metal Jacket was a great film, which I don't really believe. Way to keep it real, RN.

I can tolerate films on a television but a computer is a step too far. That said my laptop plays through my TV so the point is redundant.

He probably didn't like the coffee.
Probably not, the coffee was always pretty rank there.

It was kinda weird meeting a person who had been pretty close and had anecdotes to tell about such a mythological figure as Kubrick. It was his first editing gig as well, Kubrick sort of hired him on a whim and dare I say I wonder if it was such a good idea, the movie felt pretty disjointed as I recall, but I haven't seen it in so many years.

You watch too many new films, you should spice it up a little.
Is it better to have a dense knowledge of contemporary films giving yourself a deep understanding of a specific era or to spread your viewing over all of cinematic history and grant yourself greater diversity at the expense of depth? Or somewhere in the gooey middle? Discuss.

Assuming one can only see x number of films a year.

I like the cinema too much but I also agree with you.

FMJ isn't a great film. Who thinks it is?

It's a good watch but the story is very weak.

sully: Miracle On The Hudson

Quite enjoyed and Tom Hanks was brilliant in this imo. Though ive always been a fan of him so maybe bias here.
The end did have me laughing though in a sitcom from the 90s type of way.

Hell Or High Water: Been looking forward to this one for a while due to reading some impressive reviews, usually that can be a bad omen as I can remember plenty of occasions where I’ve arrived at a film with high expectations only to find myself disappointed, here however I have to say I was thoroughly impressed. There are a couple of things that can go wrong with a film like this the first being the casting of major Hollywood talent in what is a gritty deep south type affair however this works well here with Pine pulling off both the accent and swagger of a southerner with ease and looking and perhaps more importantly sounding the part, Ben Foster (not that one) is equally impressive as his wayward older brother. Then you could have had a problem with Jeff Bridges re-treading old ground as a small town sheriff/curmudgeonly type, and while there is a bit of this the film does however manage to give him just about enough rough edges for this to actually work by providing him with an interesting relationship with his law enforcement partner. This is a pretty stripped down lower budget type film that relies more on atmosphere, scripting and plot as opposed to star power to get the job done and it works impressively well throughout never dropping the ball in terms of authenticity as the film builds to a satisfying climax. A very fine film that probably deserved a larger audience than a lot of Pine’s bigger budget work. Very impressive and well worth the time to see it.

8.5/10

Oh god, they appear to have remade Dad's bloody Army as a film. Sky Prem is going to be shit for yet another week.

Snowden
Joseph Gordon Levitt stars as Edward Snowden besides a cast that includes Nic Cage, Rhys Iffans and Zachary Quinto. I don't know how many liberties this film takes with regards to the real story but as a film I quite enjoyed it and it got me more interested in the whole saga which I will read about. The performances were really good, especially Levitt, and it had a nice stylized cut. Much better than I hoped 8/10

The critics tend to review childrens films through the "will your kids like it" lens tbf. Because most childrens films would be panned across the board if they were targeting adults.
Tonight I sent 9 teenage girls to see Fantastic Beasts... (Bday party for my teen daughter) and when I asked them afterwards, they really enjoyed it. For them it was 7/10.

Just saw Look who's back, the Hitler film. A good premise and some funny moments but way too in-your-face with its message. 5/10.
Still, it's nowhere as ridiculously binary as Chi-raq, the worst film I've ever seen 0/10.

OTOH, Trainspotting 9/10.

Fantastic beasts.

Never seen any of the HP movies, and not sure if this is meant to be a prequel or something. It was decent, dragged in a few places. I see a lot of reviews saying its not great, but it still had some good fun moments in it. At times felt like Pokemon Go with Redmaynes character trying to catch the beasts.

I do wonder how Trainspotting has aged. It was very much of its time when it came out, while I was at uni. Every other student had one of the posters up in their flat back in the day. Not seen it in years.

It's still great! I watched it again recently and really enjoyed it. Recommended to a few mates who were yet to see it and they really liked it too so I don't think nostalgia is required.

Watch Citizen Four. When Snowden contacted the journos from The Guardian for the first original meeting he also invited a film maker. It's worth a watch as he was filmed releasing the info and watching it unfold on the news with a bit of aftermath with him on the run.

It was/is a good film. Maybe it's in part cos as an A level then grad student around that time, I saw the likes of Trainspotting/Goodfellas/ Pulp Fiction a gazillion times.

It's so 90'sy that it has actually aged pretty well. Like a period piece.

Found Elle to be a very enjoyable black comedy of manners. Smartly provocative, brilliantly acted, super cereal but playful as always. Trigger warning: has lots of ideas and clever observation. Not suitable for numbskulls who subscribe to trigger warnings.

Pete's Dragon. A below average family fantasy that employs many of those modern Disney/Pixar emotional manipulations. Like the original, the story is clunky and the dragon doesn't blend with the live action. However as a standalone creation the dog-dragon is f ecking beautiful and it's worth seeing for that alone. Trigger warning: the big dog-dragon made me cry.

Yes I'm aware that mocking trigger warnings is as lame as the warnings themselves.

I've found from experience that watching more new films means you have to sit through more mediocrity

Arrival

Very interesting take on science fiction. Not an action movie. Rather, it's a movie with emotional depth and a deeper meaning behind it. Do not get fooled by the trailer. I expected more from the movie though. The language part was very good. But at the end, I was left wondering what the actual point of it all was. Amy Adams is quite good in it. The supporting cast don't really have a lot to do as their characters don't have a lot of depth. Decent watch.

Quick Fantastic Beasts And Where To Find Them question for anyone who has seen it:

What did Johnny Depp say at the end and was it supposed to mean something? Was so bemused by him randomly turning up and instantly overacting that my mind turned off and I stopped paying attention to what was going on.

"Will we die, just a little" or maybe "shall we die, just a little"

Dark Circles.

Alex and Penny are sick of the hectic city life and decide a move out to the country to raise their newborn child. But they don't expect the horrors threatening their relationship and family.
This was on the Horror Channel so was not expecting any great, but I was pleasantly surprised , it was pretty decent, good story, decent acting.
Dispite the ending , which was just dreadful, a good solid film.

I had to google it and it was still difficult to find a definitive answer

The link below has it as "Will we die, just a little?" taken from the screenplay book.

Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them - With every film that is the first in a series they have to introduce all the charachters and give you some sort of overall theme. If you were a big fan of Harry Potter then you would have possibly had some more knowlege than others. I thought it was a good effort, it was enjoyable and hats off to Colin Farrell for his performance. 7/10
I thought the casting of Depp was odd

When reviewing Zone Horror films, you need to add in a line about tits and fanny. Fenerally boobs only on ZH, but it has its moments.
Is Dark Circles involve areola porn?
