Film The Redcafe Movie review thread

Arq (2016) -

Another Netflix Original film. Quite similar to Edge of Tomorrow and Source Code about somebody who is reliving the same period of time.

Wasn't really expecting much but I soon got hooked. Well acted and has plenty of twists and turns to keep you guessing. 7/10

Thanks for the rec. I enjoyed this last night too. Had the usual dumb character decision making plot contrivances but was a fairly enjoyable hour and a half of sci-fi/head feckery. The lead guy reminded me of Christian Bale.

The man who knew infinity (2015)

After the recent films about fellow Cambridge university mathematicians Turing (The imitation game) and Hawking (The theory of everything) we now have the self-taught Indian genius Ramanujan, who was there during the great war working with G H Hardy. The main intellectual theme is intuition and imagination (Ramanujan) versus rigour and proof (Hardy). Well made and acted, though some of the casting is slightly off - Jeremy Irons (Hardy) is about 30 years too old and Ramanujan's wife was a child of about 14 or 15 when he left for England. Recommended. 8.5/10

Just watched this. Thought it was decent but could've been much better. In general it seemed the film couldn't decide whether it was a technical movie about math, a love story, or something in between. Thought it should've chosen one and gone in that direction.

Event Horizon
A space crew and a scientist go to investigate a spaceship that went missing years prior. Once they get there, things aren't what they seem. I switched this on thinking it was Gattaca but carried on watching as the opening was quite interesting and suspenseful but as the film goes on, it just becomes Hellraiser in space. The effects dont hold up and some really shoddy acting from Sam Neil. But as an overall film, it was not that bad 6/10

I watched this at the cinema when it came out. Thinking it was just a regular sci-fi flick I went to the last showing at night. I was the only in the room that night. Nearly shit my pants. Thought it was great though. The torture effects looked pretty effective. Still think it's a decent movie. Might just give it a re-run.

It was definitely better than I thought it'd be.

Thought the sets were great. Not tacky like in most sci-fi movies. Great suspense and atmosphere within the ship too. Just remember being a bit freaked out at the time. Would probably get in my Top 100. Did you see Supernova with James Spader and Angela Bassett? Similar sort of movie but nowhere near as good.

Haven't seen that... might give it a shot.

I saw The Life of Oharu earlier today. I had been meaning to watch it for ages, highly rated and I've enjoyed the Mizoguchi's previous films, so I finally came round to it. It was sad and good and all but it didn't really struck a chord with me.

When it comes to watching obscure films, I've got nothing on pauldy and DS, tbh. I'm pretty mainstream.

I dont think I have seen this, sounds like a me film

Mizoguchi's hardly an obscure name among Japanese cinema cinephiles.

I don't really get the contempt for obscure movies though.
Just busting your balls, Nilsson. Altough I do wonder if you ever see any mainstream films at all.

I've got a toothache, so I'm pretty on the edge.

Yeah, I watch your Star Wars', Interstellar's, Mad Max's, Straight Outta Compton', Gone Girl's, and I often like them. I just try to skip the run of the mill stuff in between them.

You can actually see me going from a casual movie watcher to blossoming into a film buff in this thread.

Paul Dano to play me in the movie.
Act-1 rate movies out of 10
Act-2 Stop rating movies out of 10
Act-3 Tell people you don't do ratings.

I can see it now the movie will be shot in black and white and will consist entirely of a man walking from a shop to a bus stop in slow motion with the narration on repeat.

+ @Rooney in Paris to play a French poseur at the bus stop.

Now that's an arthouse film.

Ouija Summoning

Kids and a ouija board and an evil spirit, what could go wrong !!
It has the normal scares and voices, it has a Priest and Holy Water, doors slamming and locking, ticks all the boxes in fact.
It has been done before.
Films about Ouiji boards are always a huge let down, dont think I have seen a single good one.
This one does have a bit of a twist in it, but not enough of one to save it.
I wish there had been more horror and less of the sentimental bullshite.

3/10

The Shallows

A mere 200 yards from shore, surfer Nancy is attacked by a great white shark, with her short journey to safety becoming the ultimate contest of wills.
This was much better than was expecting it to be, has a small cast, and only one location.
This woman is stranded only a couple hundred yards from the shore, close enough to potentially shout for help. What The Shallows does so well is establish this sense of isolation and hopelessness ,and her situation of being so close yet so far from safety.
It has it faults, like the fact she can survive for days with no food or water and with huge bit in her leg and Jelly fish
Like Jaws the sharks seems to have a ability to stalk her and know what she is going to do.
Blake Lively is excellent and also looks good in a bikini.
The ending spoilt it a bit for me.
I think worth a watch.

5.5/10

Captain America: Civil War
Wow absolutely loved it! This is what BvS should have been... Fun, action packed and most importantly, it was entertaining!

Spiderman and Ant-Man were bloody excellent and really stole the show. Scarlett witch was smoking hot. Black Panther was kick ass. Loved the scenes between Cap/Bucky and Ironman. The bad guy was one of marvels best.

Just an all round enjoyablepiece of fan service. The airport battle was worth the ticket fees alone.

Surpassed the hype in my opinion 9/10
I would agree with this. 9/10 would be my score too.

Also, I would pay to see that film.

Oke, I really need to check out Event Horizon. I have seen that name being mentioned far too often now.
