Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of The Shadows (2016)

Seen at Odeon Cinema in 2D. This took me back to my younger days watching the cartoon series. I'd completely forgotten about Bebop, Rocksteady and Krang so it was good to see those guys again though I would have liked them to have been a bit more menacing rather than moronic and comedic most of the time. That being said, it's great that technology enables us to have these films done properly rather than the men in suits or ropey CGI. The interaction is really seamless in modern movies these days. Allows the viewer to appreciate the film and not be sidetracked by those "that clearly ain't real" moments. I watched this straight after Warcraft and enjoyed it more...but not as much as the first Turtles movie. Raphael by far my favourite of the 4 bros. Just enough mileage for a third I think but would love a more darker movie.

I'm giving this a 7/10.

Hmm, I have never seen the first movie, have steered away since most have said that it sucks. You are probably the first guy I have seen not totally hating it.

Might have to give it a go. Anyone else seen it?

I did the same thing as @RedPed
I saw Warcraft followed by TMNT2. I enjoyed the latter more but had fun in both. I enjoyed 2 more than 1 cos it had more turtles, and I liked Bebop and Rocksteady. Was nice to also have Casey Jones. Considering they introduced a few characters, it wasnt a lot of time wasted on their origins.
I didnt hate the first one either but 2 is an improvement for me.

Seen the first and it was good fun. If you don't take it seriously then it'll be enjoyable.

What did you think about the Orcs going down too easily against the humans in Warcraft? Did it spoil it for you??

Given its a film universe, and their power wasnt fully established (despite their size)I wasnt too bothered. From what I remember, they mostly focused on a few humans. I think the movie is a loooooot to take for somebody who is new to this world, especially all the different names, some of the characters looking the same, etc. I think its a good movie to build a universe if there are sequels. If this sits as a stand-alone then they could have done so much more.
My main problem is that whilst I had fun in the cinema, its largely forgettable. Not much stands out whereas I remember more scenes from TMNT (despite watching it on the same day a few weeks ago).

I fecking hated Warcraft. The dialogue sounded like it was written by a two year old. And this is coming from a big fan of the games and Duncan Jones.

Eye in the Sky

Really enjoyed it. If you like suspense, then give it a crack. Rickman was very good, and his closing quote is just shared in a classic Rickman manner.

Open Graves

A group of surfers discover an old board game which claims a life every time it is played.
It was just like an adult version of Jumanji, the acting was average to poor.
The story itself was actually pretty good I though and there was a very good horror in there , but this film was not it.
Had its moments but not many.

Warcraft
Saw this at the cinema and you know what? I didn't hate it. There was too much CG and a lot of it was inconsistent. Sometimes it looked fantastic and at other times it looked like it was made by an intern but the stakes always felt high and the film wasn't boring, which is a major plus point. It's a bit of daft fun. Dont go in expecting LOTR and you'll find something to enjoy here, especially the action, which was really well choreographed 6/10

TMNT: Out Of The Shadows

Watched this right after Warcraft and thought it was ok. Much better than the first one mainly because it focused more on the turtles this time round and nice to see Bebop, Rocksteady and Casey Jones on the big screen. The action scenes were ok and quite funny in places but overall it's quite forgettable 5.5/10

High Rise

I'm getting sick and tired of Ben Wheatley. First Field in England and now this?! Pretentious pile of shit. The film's message is loud and clear in the first act and the rest of the film just hammers you over head about the demise of modern society. We get the point Ben! The characters are bland and the dialogue is waaay too scripted. The film is paced horrible. On a technical point though, it looks fantastic, with brilliant cinematography and has awesome sound design/soundtrack but look beneath the surface and there's not much to enjoy here. Watch Snowpiercer instead 4/10

Southbound

Anthology horror film about (vaguely) interconnected stories following a few characters all on a highway in the middle of nowhere and they all face horrific scenarios that they have to overcome. I really liked it, had a lot to say, there's a lot of depth to the story. The segments on their own all work quite well and as a whole piece, they fit together really nicely. I'd recommend this 7.5/10

Fantastic Four (2015)

Watched on Sky Movies (just released). First watched this at the cinema but thought no, I'll give it another whirl....and yep it still sucks! This has to be the worst 'super-hero' movie ever. With the advancement in technology, this was their chance to do a proper job but I don't think the writers really know what to do with these characters. The story was really bad and the Fantastic Four never really ventured out of the research facility. The sub-plot with the Storm family was just so contrived and unnecessary with no connection between father and children, brother and sister. They just seemed more like acquaintances or work colleagues. All the stereotypes and cliches were there and as for the 'baddie'?? That must be the shortest appearance of a villain ever...well probably next to Darth Maul! This is going to need another reboot but who will touch it now...doubt whether there will be a sequel to this mess. The ever-gorgeous Kate Mara was the only redeeming quality of this film but seriously it's bad. Was really looking forward to it when it was released last year. Thankfully it's only 90-odd minutes but seriously don't bother. SERIOUSLY!!

I'm giving this a 3/10

The Brothers Grimsby (2016)

As usual with the movies from SBC, this was disgusting, but in a hilarious way.

Had plenty of good laughs. I think i haven't laughed this hard for a movie since Old School.

Yeah it's absolute bobbins. Sort of film that makes you want to punch yourself in the face.

Just been to see Race, about Jesse Owens and the story around him and the 1936 Berlin Olympics. Absolutely brilliant, best film I have seen in ages, not sure if it is historically strictly accurate but very enjoyable all the same.

3 Days to Kill (2014)

Seen on Netflix. Great action thriller starring Keven Costner. Always wanted to see this and finally decided to watch it tonight. I usually find that when they cast older stars in action movies (Costner's nearly 60 in this), Denzel Washinton, Bruce Willis, Liam Neeson and Sean Penn being other recent examples, the action's usually grittier and more raw. When they cast younger guys they tend to use more stylized heavily choreographed routines, more green screen and wires. This film was a lot better than expected though Amber Heard's role in this was a bit confusing. I thought she was going to take out the trash herself. Nevertheless Costner puts in a great performance with some subtle humour thrown in when shaking down the baddies (getting the pasta sauce recipe was the best one). This film takes you on a emotional ride throughout as he tries to reconcile his relationship with his estranged family whilst taking this last job. Thoroughly enjoyed it and would recommend.

I'm giving this an 8/10.

Green Room

Was very disappointed with this as I expected a lot coming off the back of Blue Ruin. Whereas that was a beautifully stripped down but fresh take on the revenge genre this was a whole bunch of meh. There was some beautiful cinematography at the start but when the action kicked off I just wasn't getting any tension or empathy for anyone involved. I think a major problem for me was the casting and performances were a bit tonally off. I didn't buy Patrick Stewart as a Neo Nazi leader any more than I did Imogen Poots as a shotgun toting badass whereas Anton Yelchin seemed to be mumbling through his lines. The script was entirely devoid of humour too and for a plot that basically revolves around a group of people trapped in a room it needed a much sharper script. At the end of it I was just left thinking "Is that it?".

True Story (2015) is on Sky Movies catch up just now, a true story (believe it or not...) about a disgraced former NY Times journalist who is contacted by a man accused of murdering his wife and children and trying to pass himself off as the journalist while on the run in Mexico. Without giving too much away, it centres on the journalist writing a book about the man accused of the murder but unable to tell whether or not he is actually guilty and what the facts are in the case. James Franco is the accused, and his cool and passive demeanour leave you guessing as to his guilt or otherwise (unless you know the real story of course). Well worth a watch.

Have to say I enjoyed warcraft. Well acted, lots of great action and visual effects, emotionally investing stories and characters and fast paced throughout.

Probless were the amount they shoved in the film was overloading and it was hard to pick up as somebody who never played the games. The first problem lead to some emotional aspects and story points to be rushed and underdeveloped.

Still a good film that has me excited for a potential sequel.

I thought it was a much, much better film than Blue Ruin, which was totally devoid of tension. There was also a fair bit of humour.

I also think you've mischaracterised a bit there. Patrick Stewart's Neo Nazism is incidental in the film, and Poots isn't a shotgun toting badass (she kills one person with a shotgun?). Yelchin is deliberately mild, which suits his role.

What did you think about the point I made earlier about the Orcs going down too easily against the humans??

If there was any humor in it then everyone I was watching it with forgot to laugh.

Yeah sure I've exaggerated for effect but I'm sorry Archie I have to disagree on this one. It was a nothing film with flaky acting and a silly script imo.

Maybe the end part. But that was more to do with them rushing to finish the film.

To begin with I thought the orcs took them out pretty easily.

Watched Blue Ruin and Bone Tomahawk in the last weekish.

Both fairly similar, ultra-violent journey films, though I enjoyed the latter, and its characters more (how can you not enjoy watching Kurt Russell?). I had no idea BT was that violent/ much of a horror film though, some scenes really are gut-wrenching (no side splitting laughter here, heh). Blue Ruin got less interesting as it went through, but I disagree that it was rubbish, well made and shot, interesting ideas throughout... but too much of an uninteresting lead. Still, I'd recommend both, if the premise of either sound interesting then you'll enjoy the film.

Cell
Based on a Stephen King novel about cell phone signals that are causing people to turn into zombie-like droids and cause an inevitable apocalypse. Stars John Cusack and Samuel L. Jackson. Really poor film mainly because the story is just boring, there are constant new characters thrown in with no back story and we're expected to have empathy for them and worst of all, the extras playing the zombie droids were awful chasing down our protagonists but avoiding pot-holes and jumping over puddles  The final shot of the film was one of the worst/funniest thing I have seen in years 3.5/10

The Conjuring 2

I avoided every trailer to this as I wanted to see it fresh and boy did I love it. Very similar to the first one but on a bigger scale. James Wan has got this horror thing down and you really feel your in the hands of a professional. A few too many jump scares the build ups were really suspenseful and it feels like the film earns it's scares. A few issues though. I didnt like the pandering to the Warren's egos, it was really annoying especially as I have a personal interest in the story of the Enfield Poltergeist. Also, you can tell the quality in acting when Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga are in the same scene as the rest of the actors. Nevertheless I really enjoyed it but as a die hard horror fan, I was always going to. But I would like to see James Wan venture out and use scare tactics that are a little more outside the box next time as the film is very similar to the first Conjuring and Insidious 8.5/10

Paranormal.Activity 5 The.Ghost.Dimension.

Using a special camera that can see spirits, a family must protect their daughter from an evil entity with a sinister plan.
I have watched all of these and they have got progressive worse, so I was not expecting much from this and if truth be told it did not give much, but this was better than I expected with a couple of scary bit and one bit that scared the shit out of me, so in that respect it did it job.
Dont be fooled this was a poor film , in every respect, bad acting , bad story just all bad.
Apparently this is the last in the series, but it left more question than it answered, if fact it answered none.

Matthew Fox's performance in Bone Tomahawk is either the greatest or the worst thing ever committed to film.

The Offering/The Faith of Anna Waters.

When young and successful reporter Jamie finds out that her sister has died in mysterious circumstances, she travels to Singapore to uncover the truth. There, she discovers multiple deaths linked to her sister's and must join forces with her sister's husband in order to defeat a demonic entity that is using new technology to complete an ancient mission.
Badly done possession film, why cant they make a possession film that is actually good and scary, my favourite genre but not seen a good one for a while.

Yes possession films are for the most part really bad.

If you want high qualiy possession tv check out the new Cinemax series "Outcast". 2 eps in (third one comes out today) and it is really good. Getting rave reviews.

Now You See Me 2

Felt that the entire movie was great fun, there were plenty of laughs and excited applause in the cinema throughout the film. Lizzy Caplan did a great job replacing Isla Fisher, and acting from the original cast was top notch as usual. Suspension of disbelief needed in some parts, and this is not one of those films with an intricate plot. But all in all, it was a fun ride. You will enjoy this further if you have watched the first movie.

Can't wait for the sequel now.

Did you feel it was better/on par with the first film? I didn't enjoy the conclusion to the first one, the whole third act felt rushed/messy but I had enjoyed most of the build-up until then.
