Film The Redcafe Movie review thread

The Wild Robot
Really enjoyable and touching animation for the whole family. I saw tears in my daughter's eyes, now she keeps talking about it 7/10

House of the Devil

A college student struggling with finances takes a babysitter job, not knowing that the family are a Satanist cult. Re-watched this as I couldn't remember it that well. Really enjoyed it, more than the first time. A slow burn, made to look like it was shot in the 80s, filmed on 16mm, lots of grain and the camera angles all had stalker-like motivations, always making the lead actress feel trapped. It really takes its time to build suspense and then it goes nuts in the final act, definitely worth watching for those who haven't seen it. Also just realised the girl's friend is played by Greta Gerwig 7.5/10

Thought it quality too. Not too original but knows what it wants and does it very well. Bit like the The Void movie. Would watch both again now thinking about it.

I‘ve probably you asked you about it already before, but what‘s your opinion on the Colour from Outter Space flic with Cage? Haven‘t seen it but was always quite interested in the movie before its release.

Yeah The Void is really fun.

Colour out of Space is a very memorable, lovecraftian film with a certain scene you'll never forget. It doesn't go as far as I wanted it to but a film that's worth checking out for sure.

It's great fun

Timecop (1994):
Watched most of this to distract myself during US election results, finished it now. To my unpleasant surprise, a large part of the plot is about a billionaire trying to buy an election with a plan to kick out the bottom 90% of the US to Mexico.

Anyway, it's gloriously stupid and incoherent as you'd expect from the title, JCVD has a couple of really good kicks, but nothing super-memorable except when the camera lingers on his very perfect toned behind as he does splits to escape from a bomb.

Dumb action dumber time travel perfect for killing your brain 5/10

Gladiator 2

Absolute class. Movie of the year by a country mile.

Emilia Pérez is the movie of the year with Megalopolos second.

Gladiator 2 and Dune 2 are great movies but not at the top tier of the year. I loved Gladiator 1 too but it wasn't the best film of that year either.

Wow this looks terrible.

That's probably the worst number to try to advertise the movie (my least favorite song in the entire movie). You have to watch it, its far better than that clip makes it sound. @Sweet Square should have linked El Alegato with translation, that deals with class and inequality in one of the most powerful uses of song in film I've ever seen or Bienvenida sung by Selena Gomez or El Encuentro for a great spoken word style that really lays the theme out. That English song is not a good representation of the movie.

Is it good in the same way Megalopolis is? Because that movie is only good in the way The Room is.

No. Emilia Perez is a clean, focused crime story done in musical format that deals with a lot of relevant issues in a way that is compassionate but never sacrificing the story with characters that feel both real and developed. Megalopolis has big themes and is based on images with some absolute classic scenes that will be quoted for decades but the plot isn't clean or focused and the characters are more metaphorical than real people.

Megalopolis is divisive for one reason and Emilia Perez might be divisive as well but for entirely different reasons (religious conservatives will hate it) so its not analogous to Megalopolis at all. Honestly, anyone that just like film needs to see it. I put both up there because they are more unique films than anything I've seen in years. Emilia Perez though is a much superior film with better storytelling and characters from start to finish.

Yep Ti West's earlier work is great. The Innkeepers is very good too.

A Serious Man - 2009

One of the Coen brothers' finest films. No doubt. Themes include the midlife crisis, faith, folklore and being a nebbish.

Speaks volumes to me - I was the stoner kid during his Bar Mitzvah, my dad was the physicist father albeit, to my knowledge, my mother was not seeking to divorce my father because of a relationship she had with her neighbour.

I have no personal connection to the themes in the film, but it's a true gem.

Ocean waves. This is a relatively simple Ghibli film from 1993 (made for tv) about two guys at the end of high school and the complications that the arrival of new girl from the big city bring. Not typical Ghibli subject matter and not particularly deep, but Ghibli just has a knack of making everything great. I guess the way they pitch their stories and animate their characters is just perfect for me. Plus this one has a number of great 'camera' choices that I really enjoyed. 4/5

Oh yeah, I mean most of the Coen brothers films are great. It was just nice to see a story that I could personally relate to.
Oh yeah 100%, I wasn't reacting negatively to your point, I definitely get why that would resonate on a different level. I just wanted to emphasize how good a film it is, because I think it's often forgotten/disregarded/overlooked when talking about the Coens' filmography.

It one of the very rare films that felt too short. When it ends, you're like, isn't there any more?! The Coen brothers were the best filmmakers in America year after year. One time in West Hollywood, I was eating lunch with some coworkers at a cafe near a film studio. We were talking movies, and I got going on the Coens, and I was saying they were the greatest filmmakers in America, they were the most creative, how they made me proud of American cinema, etc. etc. And then 5 seconds after I finished this foaming-at-the-mouth praise of the Coens, both of them walked into the cafe to have lunch. If only they'd heard me.

I didn't think you were reacting negatively to me btw.
But yeah, no one ever really talks about it for some reason. They talk about No Country for Old Men and Fargo a lot.

The other one i really like is that one with Nicolas Cage - Raising Arizona.

I shamefully haven't seen it, despite being a big Cage and Coen brothers fan!

Not seen this or a serious man. 2 more added to the watch list!

That is an amazing anecdote.

Substance - Demi Moore

Delivers a good message but it's so strange. I can't decide if it's good strange or just strange. During all the strangeness you still get the message.

Smile 2

I think on balance I enjoyed this more than the first one. Great performance from the lead, some good jump scares and just the right amount of gore. Only slight criticism is it got a bit messy and confusing in the final act.
