Film The Redcafe Movie review thread

Prey, loved everything about it. Very well crafted. I thought it was better than the first and second Predator.

Super Mario Bros

Utter trash. Worst type of fan service and nothing else.

Not just missing a plot, but events happen outright randomly with no explanation, slapstitck dialogue that is not remotely funny and a characterization that takes the piss off Mario all movie just so he can become a hero at the end.

2/10

The movie should be about saving the princess, but the princess was with him 90% of the movie.
It should be about this runs through trap filled paths, filled with powerups...but I got about 10 mins worth of that max.
It should be about bumping turtles and until the climax, he doesn't do it.

Rye Lane Enjoyable rom-com set in South London. Vivian Oparah was especially good.Like most movies of this type it is quite forgettable but it does a good job of entertaining you. 7/10

Super Mario Bros. Movie

Went to see the movie with the family and we all enjoyed it. Even my little daughter who doesn't like Mario and gaming in general loved it. She especially liked the princess and I was happy to see that Peach has a big role in the story and the producers decided to make her more badass.

I for one was happy to see them dropping the Italian accents for Mario and Luigi. When the movie started I was like: "dearly me, are we actually going to listen to Italian accents for the next 90 minutes?" :/

The animation, the ost and action scenes were top notch. They could have expanded on the origin stories for both Mario, Luigi and Peach even more making the story more slow paced. I think it would have benefited the overall pacing and story more, but like the games the movie is basically 90 minutes non stop action.

Even if you don't like gaming and don't get all the Mario references in it, your kids will love it. A very solid and beautifully animated kids movie. Can't wait for the sequel and the beginning of a Mario Cinematic Universe.

Super Mario Bros

I went to see the movie yesterday. As a fan of Nintendo for a long time, I saw the evolution all across Super Mario Bros games over a few decades. Hence the bar was really high before I came in. That being said, the production really went all in to meet those expectations and beyond. Illumination can deservedly add this feat on an excellent resume in the world of animation.

I fully agree with @Unam333 that we could have had a little bit more backstory for Mario and Luigi, but the pace of the movie was also actually meant to reflect how a Super Mario Bros game actually is when you play it - nonstop action. The trials and errors involving Mario on the obstace course were a perfect reflection of how a players learns the ropes in the game. As for Luigi, his arrival in the other dimension reminded me of my fond memory of seeing him trying to find his way through the darkness in Luigi's Mansion.

I really enjoyed seeing Peach first acting as a mentor and then showing how capable of a fighter she is; it's a direct reference to how good of a fighter she is in Super Smash Bros games. It was nice to see a little bit of backstory on how she arrived to the Mushroom Kingdom and was raised by the Toads. Considering that games don't usually look into Peach's past, I was happy to see some of it.

While I liked seeing the Mushroom Kingdom coming to life, my favorite depiction of any world in that universe has to be the Jungle Kingdom. I was immediately blown away as soon as we entered the land of the Kongs. The arena in the movie was also a nice touch that combines the original Donkey Kong game and a Smash Bros arena.

Jack Black was outright perfect as Bowser; I don't think anyone else could have been a better choice for the character. The song was a highlight in itself and a nice reference to the how many times across games that Bowser tried to get Peach all for himself.

Seeing the number of game references in the movie and knowing that it is only the tip of the iceberg, I already can't wait for an eventual sequel.

9.2/10

P.S.: Now that Mario set those box-office records and got the accolades, the bar is extremely high for whoever will want to adapt The Legend of Zelda and to achieve the same kind of success.

Oh god. Can't think of anything worse. Aren't we just getting to the last of the horrible Marvel universe? Does every ginormous franchise need to create a money spinning universe to force down people's throats?

Super Mario Bros 1/10. Crap, obviously. As you'd expect. Not fun, not interesting, just sloppy and vacuous. Kids might enjoy it but then again, they are kids. It's not even one of those good kid films, though. Mega avoid.

I liked it. But then I absolutely don't care about wine, so any nonsense in that area wouldn't have bothered me. :D
Saw it in the movie theater & I was the only one who laughed out loud during the pivotal scene that was about Giamatti's most important wine. It was such a glaring gaffe in the movie. My then fiancée was so embarrassed.

Pretty decent movie. But feels like it could have been so much better. My feeling is that they had the premise and then had 3-4 plot lines and in the end decided to implement a bit of each. So parts can feel disconnected, the use of the “entity” is either jump scares and then completely ignored for the rest of the movie until the theme shifts back.

Terrible movie, especially from the wine angle.
I’m glad 3 of these 4 leads don’t work that much anymore. Virginia Madsen is harmless enough, though. TH Church talks like a braying donkey. Giamatti’s part was really badly written, not sure anyone could have salvaged the role, but good god he was annoying in this film.

If you’re in the mood for another terrible wine film, watch Bottle Shock. It makes Sideways look like a masterpiece.

Never saw it. I like the story of the ‘76 Judgement of Paris tasting (went to a retrospective tasting of almost all of the wines shown in 1976) & got to know Spurrier a little bit years ago, but I never heard anything good about the film.

The Deep House
Two internet based supernatural explorers visit a house at the bottom of a lake... Scary things happen, obviously. I really enjoyed the premise of a haunted house film set underwater, which massively ups the tension due to the time limit... Also made by the guys that made the French extreme horror Inside, which I loved... But this movie didn't really do the premise justice. Badly written characters/dialogue and not as scary as it needed to be. Ending was a bit shit too. Decent but wasted potential 5.5/10

The Soccer Football Movie

Started watching it last night out of curiosity and for the Ibrahimovic factor. Now I hate Americans even more. Couldn't even say his name right. Using terms like the penalty shot and the All Star Cup. Turned it off after 15 minutes.

The Menu

A young couple travels to a remote island to eat at an exclusive restaurant where the chef has prepared a lavish menu, with some shocking surprises.
Very watchable film, Fiennes and Anya Taylor-Joy were brilliant.
A mystery, a comedy, a horror film, all rolled in to one very enjoyable film

Paw Patrol: The Movie
Kids movie. Laughed a few times 5/10

ShAzam! Fury Of The Gods

Whilst I quite enjoyed the small scale and low stakes of the first one, this was just a by the numbers superhero film and unless you're a superhero film with a completely new take/angle, you're instantly forgettable... Like this film. Younger audiences might enjoy it though and Zachary Levi is pretty funny 5.5/10

You Paw Patrol stans are taking over the internet.

Ant Man 3
Unremarkable. Nothing stood out as being especially bad or weak, just a really mediocre movie. Theres some charm in the cast in the sense i could probably watch anything with Paul Rudd in it and not hate it and Michael Douglas kind of seemed like he was having fun. A couple of pretty skyboxes. I'm just beyond bored of superhero movies. I think even if they made a genuinely great one (this definitely isn't) i'd still be bored out of my tree watching it.
5/10 because it avoids being annoying and i feel like it deserves a point for only being 2 hours

Fits this movie too.

Ant Man / Ant Man and the Wasp

After rewatching Infinity Wars and End Game I realised that I had not seen ether of these.
Enjoyed them both.
Both fun and easy to watch, Rudd Lily and Douglas all excellent.
Both get the same score.

Babylon
Follows the rise and demise of multiple characters in1920s Hollywood as the film industry transitioned from silent films to sound. Expected to hate this but surprisingly, I quite enjoyed it for being a ridiculous capture of time. It was definitely a hot mess but it felt like it was trying to capture an era as opposed to trying to tell a coherent story. Some scenes, especially for people that work in film in any capacity, especially set life and watching BTS footage, were really standout. I'm talking mainly about trying to get that final shot before sundown and the scene where the sound recordist keeps interrupting. Those two scenes were fantastic. The final thirty or so minutes did however hint at how this could have been a much better and overall pleasing film to all audiences but by then, it felt a little too late. This needed at least 45 minutes shaved off the run time. Not for everyone but I had a laugh 7/10

I watched I Care A Lot (2020) last weekend. Didn't like it. Rosamund Pike runs a company that forces people into guardianship and then basically robs them blind, while Peter Dinklage is a mob boss whose mum is one of the victims. Complications ensue between these stubborn characters, and quickly escalate.

It's supposed to be a black comedy, but the comedic part is only really present in the first half hour or so. The rest is more like a fairly lame thriller (that really derails at the end), where two utterly unlikeable characters try to one-up each other. I basically wanted them both to lose badly but no such luck. Really not enjoyable and I was downright annoyed at the end. 1/5

I also watched Something's Gotta Give, a 2003 romantic comedy by Nancy Meyers starring Jack Nicholson and Diane Keaton. That's a pretty good starting point and it's not a bad film, but also not all that good. Keaton is strong, but Nicholson much less so, and the story isn't all that either. I thought I was re-watching one Nicholson's good late-career films, but I think I got the title confused with About Schmidt or As Good As It Gets. In any case, it's enjoyable enough, but I didn't see the real quality here. 2.5/5

The Tomorrow War

I was not expecting much from this after reading reviews on here, but I enjoyed it.
I thought the story was original, the aliens where I thought scary, yeah some of the acting was dodgy but could live with that.
Chris Pratt was OK, Yvonne Strahovski, who did a terrific job in The Handmaid's Tale, where she plays a character, you can't help hating, she this time plays a different character, and she was good.
2 hours + passed pretty quick and I was entertained, just what you want in a cheesy end of the world film.
Not a classic and nor was it trying to be.
There is a sequel already in the works.
