Film The Redcafe Movie review thread

Btw I end up watching bad acting by Keanu on youtube:

There's a joke there somewhere that I don't get. Was he awkward the entire time and kept touching his hair?
It’s basically a fill-in-the-blank inversion of the “he was surprisingly nice and very down to earth”. I think I read it on here somewhere, years ago!

Saw Broker a few weeks ago. Good movie 7/10.

Rye Lane - a good laugh and a nice twist on a rom-com. 8/10.

I saw John Wick 1 and was underwhelmed and hated 2. Did anything happen in 3 that would make it worthwhile wading through it to watch 4?

Speak No Evil

Watched this the other night. It's a danish horror/thriller. It’s a frustrating one because I was really into it for the most part. It has a great sense of impending dread throughout the first 40 minutes or so and does a tremendous job of building atmosphere in a way that not many horror films I’ve watched recently have managed to do.

However, and isn’t this always the case, it is let down by a ridiculous ending and two characters who are beyond horror cliche parody. The decisions these two make just completely take you out of the film. I know what the themes of the movie are, and I know what the director was going for, but I’m afraid that doesn’t excuse how absurd it got. Such a shame, too, as I was really enjoying it for most of its runtime.

Aftersun

This movie is just perfect. What I love most about the film is how subtle it is. It’s not banging you around the head saying YOU SHOULD BE FEELING EMOTIONS NOW. It creeps up on you out of nowhere, and before you know it you’re a wreck! There’s not much more to say about it really. Just watch it, because saying what the film is about doesn’t come close to capturing what it really is.

The exact historical accuracy of the ceasefire negotiations were more or less irrelevant to me. It was the surreal disconnect between thousands getting slaughtered while they happend reinforced by details like worrying about how fresh the croissants were.

In our house I tend to be the one who gets a tear in my eye but my wife was really effected by this film at the end. Maybe because my son is about the protagonists age but maybe as it was all such a waste.

Yeah, I get that. The movie just didn't do it for me overall. On a side note, every time I see croissants in movies I think of their origin of being created by the Austrians after the Ottoman Empire's defeat outside Vienna to signify the crescent moon on their flag.

"This is either going to be a genius move or a disaster, there's no in between."
The best thing anyone can say about a movie.

His last film was in 2017(Manhunt)and it was ok. But I'm pretty sure it's Woo first western directing gig since doing a video game in 2007. Everything about it sounds incredible : set on christmas eve in LA, no talking, operatic. Also it was nice to see his 1989 film The Killer referenced in the new Wick film.

Children of Men

I watched it when it came out, but for some reason it didn't stick with me. Loved it now, though. I guess it's a bit of classic, so not much to add. I don't even know what this kind of aesthetic is called, but I like it. 10/10

For some reason I had this memory that Monica Bellucci plays in this one, and I was eagerly waiting for her to show up until I realized I had to settle with Julianne Moore. I had to check, and I guess I was thinking about Shoot 'em Up, which I suppose was so forgettable that my brain just merged it with this one.

I’ll always have a soft spot for Keanu, but a YouTube clip of his worst acting lasting only 23 seconds is the greatest trick since the one the devil pulled that time…

I was the other way around. I liked it far more when I first watched it and was underwhelmed when watching it again more recently. Go figure.

why the feck is the new john wick almost 3 hours long?

I can't be fecked with all that

Does anyone actually rate him as an actor though?
I don't think anyone does, really. I'm not even sure he does - I was listening to the Smartless podcast where he was a guest and he was making fun of his accent in Dracula for example. He seems to be a sound guy, that has had a rough ride, and I think there's a lot of sympathy for him too - on top of that, he physically fits the role perfectly, so I think people don't really care about his acting.

Best film of the year. It's gorgeous.

It's so so good, and one that is ageing extremely well. I also rewatched it recently with one of my friends who hadn't seen it and he loved it. It's pretty much the perfect creation of a dystopian world, and in terms of pure cinematography, it's up there with the best. Some of the shots and camera work are breathtaking.

I suppose it shows how important timing is. I recently watched Immortal (2004) which I thought was quite cool when it came out, but god did it age poorly, totally unwatchable. Not that I'm comparing it to Children of Men...

Absolutely agree. I was a bit surprised to see that he hasn't really made much since. Gravity and then Roma, in like 17 years.

After Elem Klimov made Come And See, he pretty much called it quits telling people he hasn't got anything more to say. I do sort of wonder if it's the same with Cuarón(Roma is a nostalgia piece and Gravity is more about the technical achievement).

Tbh it would be difficult to follow Children Of Men. It's captures better than anything else, the ''end of history'' period we are currently living through.

John Wick 4

Obviously dumb as a bag of spanners but I enjoyed it a lot (i think). I say "I think" because this was the film I chose to experience in 4DX for the first time so when I wasn't being drenched by water or nearly thrown violently out of my seat (that car chase fight scene near the end) it was a jolly good blast. Keanu is starting to look a bit slow now so I hope they leave it here and go out on a high. Also found Ian McShane's top teeth irritatingly distracting, as was Pennywise's awful French accent. Also is it just me or did his main henchman guy get killed about 3 times in the last 30 mins?

Edit: Also the plot of this one makes the 3rd film completely superfluous.
Could he not have just called for a duel in that one?

The Passion Of Joan Of Arc(1928)

One of the all time greats. It’s currently up on YouTube with English subtitles.

10/10

John Wick 4
4/10

Can somebody tell me what I'm missing here? I'm struggling to really remember the tone of 1, 2 and 3 - but I do remember enjoying them all, but I thought this just had no direction. It's like it wants to be half B-movie, satirical, OTT action movie, and half serious, neo-noir action film, but does neither well in isolation nor does it blend them together well.

This seemed like it lacked any truly ridiculous and comedic elements that I felt were present in the first film, and the action seemed far less sharp and impressive.

John Wick 4
It's ridiculous. Keanu's line readings are even more over the top silly and Donny Yen should be elected supreme leader of Earth. Oh and extra points for fat suit Scott Adkins.

It's a Limmy thing.
He does it too, title of one of his books, but it didn’t originate with him. Back when Steve Martin was filming Father of the Bride (1991) in Pasadena, they used my grandparents’ house as a location, and Steve Martin would pose for pictures—but instead of autographs he handed out a business card that read “I met Steve Martin and he was surprisingly down to earth and very funny.”

EDIT: Not quite how I remembered it.

Ah! Good to know.
Oddly I did meet Steve Martin once and he was surprisingly down to Earth and very funny.

Tetris

Fun little movie, a bit corny. Pretty crazy story about Tetris. Taron Egerton is a solid actor.

7/10

John Wick: 101 minutes
John Wick 2: 122 minutes
John Wick 3: 131 minutes
John Wick 4: 169 minutes

Stupefied zombie consumers.

I don’t get this trend for films getting longer and longer. What’s behind it? I can’t think of any financial upside for the industry, or the cinemas. So why is it happening?

Assuming all these John Wick movies are just a cynical money grab wouldn’t it be more lucrative to make each new movie progressively shorter, rather than the other way round?!
