Film The Redcafe Movie review thread

Mondo Cane (1962)

The Mondo film grandaddy is a series of bizarre vignettes of cultural oddities, often brutal or sexual, from around the world. Several were 're-enacted' though, in keeping with the genre's moral bankruptcy in the hunt for shocking footage to attract viewers. The sarcastic voiceover doesn't exactly help its credibility claims as a serious documentary. Some parts are interesting, eg the footage from a American woman's gym in the 1960s and the Japanese bloke's one, and the weird catholic sect bit.

6/10

@Dirty Schwein I've just discovered effedupmovies.com and the free horror collection on there is great.

Rendition

A 2007 flick discussing the implications of the US extraordinary rendition of an Egyptian American. With an amazing ensemble cast, it strived to be a little more than it was, devolving into a formulaic effort that did have some charm.

6.5 / 10

For those not familiar with 'extraordinary rendition:'

White Noise.

Thought this was awful in all honesty. It has so many tonal swerves and is frankly astounding how over-dramatic it is from the mid-point on-wards, deviating way too much from the book which at best is wry satire.

What really irks me is how it avoids actual contemplation about its main topics (alienation, fear of death, consumerism) but somehow constantly bangs you over the head with them.

I'll give it an avoid / 10.

Netflix film. Very powerful. Very moving. Incredible Saturday afternoon film.

Second that. Amazing movie. Very moving. Also makes you really grateful for the lives we have and the sacrifices others are making everyday for a small % of what we think as a normal life.

Guillermo Del Toro's Pinocchio 9/10

Such a beautiful take on the story. Heartfelt, emotional and very well voice acted. Ofcourse the great animation as well, love stop motion. Shed a tear towards the end.

Must watch.

Do the Right Thing

Beautifully shot, well written and sadly timeless. The scuffed Jordans scene is still funny.

I’ve seen it show up on Netflix and read it got panned by a lot of critics … had a look at a few on IMDb and it was around the 5-6 mark out of 10, odd 7 here and there.

I know critics aren’t right just because it’s their job but it’s got a LOT of poor/average reviews. I’ll watch it sometime and make my own mind up.. I wonder if the critics had a downer on it because they were comparing to the original.

I think you're confusing it with Disney's live action remake.

This is Del Toro's version:

Highly rated by both fans and critics (98% in RT). I was really looking forward to watching it so I didn't read any reviews before watching it, happy to see that most people liked it as well.

Absolutely. I watched it with my daughter and there were so many lessons in there for her, I hope she was taking note. Really great film, difficult subject very well done.

Yup I am :)

Obviously quickly searchedon IMDb and not picked up difference. Glad del Toro version appears better received and will watch soon.

Last Cannibal World

Lost in the jungle cannibal drama, set in the Philippines, rather than the Amazon, for a change. Brutal in parts, but way less so than Cannibal Ferox and Cannibal Holocaust (no dicks get cut off for once) and part survival and chase movie as much as anything. The film doesn't even attempt the spurious intellectual basis of the other two and despite the wafer thin plot, it rattles along at a nice pace and is entertaining enough if you're in the mood for a mindless watch. I do like that 70s/80s films were generally 90 minutes long too.

Out of Time (2003)

Denzel walking around in summer shirts down south and Eva Mendes being a cop? Yeah, that was a cool crime flick.

A Classic Horror Sorry
A group of car poolers get stuck in a Forrest after their vehicle crashes and then are in the crosshairs of a satanic cult. Netflix movie, I really enjoyed the first two thirds of this film, maybe because I'm a sucker for cult based horror. There is some great visual imagery in this film and you can see many inspirations going into the movie from horror classics of the past. I think the final third really let's the film down though and unfortunately, that's obviously the lasting memory. I still enjoyed it though 7/10

Cannibal Apocalypse
Different take on the cannibal genre, moving away from the classic exploitation films set in the jungle, reimagining cannibalism as a contagious condition brought back by soldiers from Vietnam. A bit more emotional depth than its peers and less linear in its plotting, it's a decent early 80s horror film with echoes of Demons and Rabid that shouldn't be judged alongside Cannibal Holocaust and Ferox.

Why's The Whale not coming out in UK till February??

fecking grinds my gears, that.

The Last House on the Left

Entertaining classic revenge thriller and early Wes Craven film. I hadn't watched it in maybe 20 years and this was the uncut version which wasn't available then. The torture scenes have long since lost the power to shock, though they score some points for originality. The juxtaposition of the comedic vignettes with the inept local policemen alongside the brutal violence is stark and effective. A couple of minor continuity and plotting gripes aside, it's engaging and fast-paced, with a running time of just 84 minutes.

Jaws

All the Spielberg criticism in the other thread(which I kind of took part in) reminded me that I hadn't seen Jaws yet, so I put it on when I saw that Netflix had it.

I'm glad that I did because it's great a film. You really feel like you're on that boat with the three men. The last 10 minutes are so intense, especially after hearing Quint's speech earlier. By far the best Spielberg film in my opinion, although I haven't seen Schindler's List in a very long time so I might have to give that a rewatch.

I love it. One of my favourites.

My favourite film of all time, everything about it is top notch especially the dialogue. Saw it first when I was 10 years old and have re-watched several times.

It's one of those movies where I will watch no matter when in the movie I stumble upon it.

Bones and All
Very creepy, very good. An original and strong take on the premise. Well worth a watch

Yeah I enjoyed it too.

Although I think I would've liked it a lot more if I was an edgy teenage girl.

Watched it today, powerful and great movie. Puts a little perspective on our everyday struggles.

Also never thought a film featuring Matthias Schweighöfer would be discussed on the Caf :D

Yeah i guess I would have too. Still, it works regardless.

He's a wonderful director. The cinematography was lovely. I guessed the exact year it's set in (1988) just from watching it - that's how good the production design was!

The Descent

Pretty chilling flic. Started well off, a bit cliché characters but really had me on my toes. I didn't know about the "twist" midway in. Looked a bit out of place and changed the whole dynamic and apprearance of the movie so not really sure what to think about it at first but now decided it was still pretty damn good. 7/10

Jeepers Creepers

Think I saw parts of the opening a couple of years ago and decided I was too uncomfortable at that moment (the scene where he dumps two bodies into that tube) so now watched the whole thing and who would have thought it turns into silly instead of scary almost right after that scene? Dumb movie. 3.5/10

I'd rate it higher personally since it was pretty groundbreaking on different accounts imho. But also not a movie I'd like to watch again. David Hess wrote the music in case you didn't know.

Saw House on the edge of the Park which is a bit of a rip off but directed by Deodato and also heavily featuring David Hess. Bit too long and a bit too repetitive but a nice twist at the end. 5/10

Anyone heard of The House That Jack Built? It's a movie about a deranged killer...

A nursery just opened up in my turn called The Nursery That Jack Built .. In the same font and everything.

Won't be sending my daughter there that's for sure

Must be a Lars Von Trier fan.

The Banshees of Insiherin-
In Bruges is one or my favourites so I might be biased but one of the best movies released this year.
