Film The Redcafe Movie review thread

Ah! Sorry, missed the link - that colour is never obvious enough for me. But yes, that makes a lot more sense in the context. I've never seen it, but it does sound good. Not on Netflix unfortunately, but I'll keep it in mind!

Fresh is very good. I'd also look for Dead Presidents if you haven't seen it.

Morbius

I was not impressed by this at all.

Seems rushed, no memorable performances (despite some articles I've seen praising Leto and Smith).

Even the graphics, it looks like they've gone overboard trying to make them memorable whereas it just makes the credits impossible to read as they're in tiny writing and the role/ name are on opposite sides of the screen.

The plot moves along so slow and to be honest never really gets going.

In addition, the end credit scenes were a waste of time. Nothing in there to excite for any future instalment.

The ending was also a huge disappointment. It was obvious that the 2 main characters were being set up for the final showdown, and that Milo would kill Nicholas ahead of it.

But then the final showdown was a) over too quickly and b) very difficult to work out which character was which and where they were because the place was swarming with an exaggerated amount of bats.

I also thought the overuse of random slow motion clips was trying to show off and backfired.

Overall struggling to go over 5/10 for this, maybe a second watch is in order.

The knight, he was a terrible knight (as in the story, not the actor performance).
Oh got you. I think that’s the whole point though (that was my takeaway).

Boiling Point

Watched this on Netflix having heard it had been released from this thread. Comes in at about 90 minutes and well worth the watch if you fancy something a little different.

Stephen Graham is as always superb in the lead role as head Chef, and partner, of a high end restaurant. The film is a one shot special depicting one very stressful night at his restaurant (mad Friday in the lead up to Christmas).

It’s a fascinating watch with so many little subplots all going on at the same time. It also leaves you wondering about what exactly has gone on off screen as different conversations develop between the characters all of which link in to the overall intense dynamic of the film.

I found it very realistic of life. Small mistakes can cost you a lot. Everyone spinning players in both work and their social lives, people breaking down and the overall toll this has on our mental health and coping mechanisms.

Rimetti a noi i nostri debiti (Forgive Us Our Debts). An Italian drama from 2018 about a guy who is deeply in debt, and accepts a job at a debt recovery company. At first, he takes to it very well - but he soon starts to becoming less comfortable with the methods used.

I really liked this. Its story is fairly grim, but it is not displayed as such, and there is a fair bit of black humor as well, and a compelling and layered story with complex characters that kept me interested and engrossed all along. Beautifully camerawork too - lots of great and patient shots and nice lighting. 4/5

The Amazing Spide-rman. A 2012 superhero origin story about, well, Spiderman (this time played by Andrew Garfield). One of many, yes. I wasn't a big fan. The origin story is really long, and fairly slow. That would be OK as a concept, but there isn't a lot of surprise or drama; and then a bit over halfway through, rthis turns into your typical superhero film with a nonsense story and lots of destruction. Also pretty annoying that the only non-white guy is basically the only character with bad intentions. If you want to watch a superhero film, watch something else. 2/5

Happy Gilmore/ A 1996 comedy with Adam Sandler. We needed something short and figured this couldn't be that bad. We were wrong and turned it off after 10 min. If the jokes aren't funny but annoying, then what's the point? 0/5 (We watched Menace II Society instead, which was a good decision! Somewhat different genre though. :D )

Finding Dory. A 2016 Pixar film about a forgetful fish looking for her parents. It's basically a roadmovie, except it kinda loops around (it comes back to same points), with a couple of pretty fantastical exits out of difficult situations. Those are not really criteria to judge a kids animation movie by, but I'm used to better from Pixar. The animation is absolutely gorgeous and most of the characters are cute (although some are also irritating - like the beluga); but it's not a film you can take seriously (unlike, say, Finding Nemo), and I didn't enjoy it all that much. 2/5

The Biggest Little Farm (2019)
True story (documentary film) about a young couple living in an apartment in Santa Monica, California and how they changed their lives around when they adopted a dog and then bought 200 acres of underused southern Californian farmland to make a sustainable farm.
Farming is tough enough, but to do it the way they did was even tougher and amidst one of the worst droughts in CA history.
9/10.
I watched this on a long haul flight yesterday. I was searching through the list of movies available and tbh I was feeling jaded with the fiction movies on offer. The one exception being the Bond film I watched on an outbound trip a while back. I’ve very little interest in watching fiction these days. Not sure why.

Death on the Nile

Watched it on Disney+ so obviously it started off with a fecking Marvel style origin story for Poirot's moustache. The murderer was so obvious after the first ten minutes of the movie that it made the entire thing tedious to watch, especially so since the actual murder doesn't seem to happen until halfway through the movie.

Then it's a clumsy rush to finish the plot off at breakneck speed, providing absolutely nothing about the supporting characters other than "oh yeah, I guess I do have a motive to kill that person but I also loved them so ooooohhhhh who knows Iol" which means I don't really care about any of them and kind of wish they all died.

That would've been a great movie, actually. Poirot goes insane and starts killing everyone and he's eventually put down by Egyptian police. Then his moustache comes back as an anti-hero that fights evil moustached beings like Tony Stark's dad or Stan Lee.

3/10

Evil Dead Trap(1988)

Japanese horror film. Don’t want to say anything as I went into this knowing almost nothing and it was the perfect way to experience this movie. It’s up on YouTube in 1080p with English subtitles, go watch it.

Insane film.

9/10

Never heard of the movie and I've watched alot of Jhorror.
The movie felt like a combination of
Tesis (also on Youtube), The Thing and the Guinea Pig series.
The makeup was amazing. Unfortunately, even for a low budget movie, the acting and story aren't really that great.

6/10

Tesis
I've seen this movie a couple of times. I don't think I will ever get bored of this movie. It's just too good. It's on Youtube.

La chute de l'empire américain (The Fall of the American Empire). A 2018 Quebec thriller drama comedy by Denys Arcand about a delivery guy in Montreal who witnesses a robbery that ends in a shootout, takes home two big bags full of money, and then enlists an escort and a criminal accountant that just got out of jail to figure out what to do with it while staying safe from the police investigation and the gangs looking to recover the money.

This was brilliant. It's got the tension of a heist thriller, the personal drama of the main characters, lots of (dark) comedy, and to top it all off, a lot of social criticism about political and financial corruption and the role of money. (Hence the title, 'American Empire' standing for all the all-pervasive power and importance of money.) Great acting and filming, and really just a joy to watch throughout.

Denys Arcand is best known from Le déclin de l'empire américain (The Decline of the American Empire; 1986) and Les invasion barbares (The Barbarian Invasions; won an Oscar in 2003), both of which are ultimately very sad film. (Although I haven't seen the first one myself.) This film is supposed to be a kind of spiritual successor, but it's got nothing of that darkness. If anything, it becomes a bit of a feel-good film along the way - surprisingly given some of the subject matter.

As I said, really good. 9/10

So just watched Moonfall after seeing how bad the critics and everyone else for that matter. The ex-husband, how the feck did he get past the auditions, I could have auditioned for it then!

But for some reason I didn't hate it

Of course I was poking holes all along the way for its ridiculousness, but honestly still kinda enjoyed the 2 hours :nervous: I think that's down to solely the premise of the story and wanting to see where they going with it that only that made me watch on, because everything else, admittedly, was terribly done, but especially the acting of almost everyone.

Anyway, I can see how someone going to the cinema to watch this felt like it was a complete waste of time/money, but for me sitting at home and passing the time, I've watched worse.

A solid 5/10. Watchable but don't go into it expecting much.

After reading your review, I sat in disbelief to see you want to watch it again. :nervous:
I could never watch something that has a review like the one you attached to it.
That's like watching all our CL final losses again. Just why. :wenger:

MOSUL - (Netflix 2020)

Iraqi-Arabic language film that follows the story of an Iraqi SWAT team as it makes its way through ISIS controlled Mosul.

I usually avoid Iraq war movies because they wind up somewhat inauthentic. This one is probably one of the most realistic war films I've ever seen.

9.5

I agree, really strong. Well, I can't judge the authenticity, but I thought this worked really well as a movie and was quite different from the usual fare through its Iraqi perspective.

This sounds up my street. I wonder if I'll understand the Quebecois though

Death on the Nile

Yawn. Poirot is David Sutchet. Branagh is no where near him he's not fit to even lace his boots, absolutely no resemblance of Poirot. I read the book almost 20+ years ago I literally forgot everything but can spot the killer in the first 30 minute, Gal Gadot is overacting, so does the whole cast and there's alot of I said it happened therefore it must have happened.

Do yourself a favor, read the book.

That'd be cheating

I'm not above it
:D

Why though? Having grown up in the Netherlands, I am totally used to watching almost every film with subtitles. And we always have it on at home now anyway, both cause we can't have the volume wake up our kids, and because in some films the dialogues just aren't mixed so you can hear every word.

Morbius - Utterly charmless and dull. He's basically Man bat but somehow has super natural powers. Unless the bats are supposed to be other worldly and I completely missed it. Jared Leto isn't very good, Matt Smith ends up looking like a cross between Hunson Abadeer and the big bopper, Jared Harris continues a trend of great actors completely wasted in superhero films and the end fight scene is barely a fight scene. However for the stick its getting as the worst ever marvel movie, it isn't that much worse than most midling marvel films and in fact because of it's much shorter run time I'd stick it above Eternals.

Eh toé là! Câlice...

Gotta admit that I also have the same reflex to get subs on if I want to catch what Aussies are saying in English.:D

You've got to watch the Quebec French dub for "Slap Shot" (1977). For people among us who are ice hockey fans worldwide, it is said that is a must.

May favorite Canadian French language lesson is of course this one:

Except there isn't much cursing in La chute de l'empire américain.

Haha I saw the sequel to this is on Netflix the other day actually...bon shout merci :)

Dune: Part One (2021)

Managed to catch this at the cinema this evening before ending its cinema run. I'm glad I caught it on the big screen where films of this ilk should always initially be viewed but although it was visually impressive, I still couldn't help comparing it to its predecessor from almost 30 years ago. Maybe because David Lynch was able to tell the full story in less running time than this first instalment, he was able to achieve a more coherent and engaging end result, which for me is far superior to this up-to-date retelling. Although Villeneuve had more time to develop the characters, I feel that he was probably more interested in set design, props and cinematography, which is not always a bad thing than in getting the audience on board with the story, which kind of just ambled along at a slow pace. Although Lynch also went big on those things too, it was always the characters that were at front and centre. I was very disappointed with Baron and Rabben Harkonnen, for example, who were nowhere near as menacing as Lynch's interpretations. Everything seemed more toned down than in the earlier version, which was a bit of a fail in my opinion.

Still it looked great and had it's moments and dear lord, just how gorgeous is Rebecca Ferguson. I probably would have rated it higher if not for the eminently better Lynch's version.

I'm giving this a 7/10.

The Outfit.

Probably reviewed already, so will just add to it.
Thoroughly enjoyable and excellent acting, especially from Mark Rylance, he just made it work, perfectly.

8/10 for me.

I was hard to watch when t came out in the mid-90's and I doubt it has aged well.

The Cursed

In rural 19th-century France, a mysterious, possibly supernatural menace threatens a small village. John McBride, a pathologist, comes to town to investigate the danger - and exorcise some of his own demons in the process.
One of the better horror films I have seen for a while, dark atmosphric , did not depend on jump scares.
The acting was excellent, the location was stunning, creepy music and I thought a satistfying end.
Well worth watching.

8/10

Sonic the Hedgehog 2

At one point, Jim Carrey operates a mech while Pantera plays. 10/10

(Actual rating 7/10. It’s silly fun, with a few decent laughs. I enjoyed it).

Unrelated, but Nic Cage is doing an AMA on /r/movies. Interesting stuff.

Morbius
Flat and boring. Morbius and the bad guy looked like they were cosplaying. Small scale story with barely any stakes. A few nice action scenes 3/10
