Film The Redcafe Movie review thread

Borat Subsequent Moviefilm
Not as enjoyable as the original but that's probably because it was so fresh then. There's still loads of laughs to be had and for a film that free with Amazon Prime, it's definitely worth a watch 6.5/10

Mine 9

9 miners get stuck in a mine when the 9 of them cause the mine to collapse. For a film with a super clear premise, it was all over the place. I don't have a clue what even happened 2/10

Avengers Assemble

The original team up of the Avengers. Looks very dated now and more like an episode of The Flash or something like that. Still very fun though 7/10

Anyone got any recommendations for any non-obvious films on amazon prime/netflix that they've watched recently?

If genre is required, then thriller/horror/suspense will do but generally all will be welcomed.

Two movies that just come to mind right away: The Wave (think it's on Prime?) and The Ritual on Netflix. Both set in Scandinavia but one actually is Norwegian, the other is British. I love Scandinavian type moody/atmospheric movies though. They don't laugh much in those. Maybe that says something about me.

Appreciate it! I feel I’ve watched The Ritual. Not seen The Wave, will givenit a crack.

Many thanks!

Mystic River was quite good. Its on Netflix

WIll also give this a crack-a-doodle-doo.

Calm with Horses if you fancy something gritty and tense. Well it's not that tense but it's a good watch with solid performances all around. Came on Netflix last week I believe.

Brief synopsis - Retired boxer works as an enforcer for a drugs gang whilst trying to balance time with his autistic son. Things go tits up.

Any limits to when it was made?

A few people were praising Caliber (Netflix) recently. Haven't seen it myself, and don't know if it's non-obvious enough though. (Maybe you even were one of those people that talked about it...)

The Long Good Friday (1980)

This was an entertaining British gangster flick, even though it wasn't hard to figure out the 'whodunit' aspect.

I had to stop watching this. Didn’t rate it at all - sorry! Cringey stuff clearly ripped from Guy Ritchie films but with non convincing gangster characters.

1917 is up on Prime I believe. Great film.

I'm sure I've bored people on here before with this but The Long Good Friday and The Cook, the Thief, His Wife & Her Lover are the perfect films in understanding Thatcherism imo.

As both include great performances from Helen Mirren.

I'm not familiar with Thatcherism, can you expand on its relation to The Long Good Friday? Might as well learn something new while the movie is fresh in my mind.

Fair enough if you didn't rate it but I fail to see anything in there at all to do with Guy Ritchie films. Are you suggesting his films have convincing gangster characters? That's a stretch as well.

Gritty British/Irish gangster films always have a Guy Ritchie feel to them, but suppose this was a bit more bleak.

Yeah, they absolutely do, especially Snatch and Lock Stock. Very real feeling to all of Vinnie Jones’ characters, brick top, even the hefty bastard who got battered by Brad Pitt in the barn

Gorgeous George :D

There's loads of good stuff, including: Happy Go Lucky, Hunt for the Wilderpeople, Compliance, Brooklyn, 24 Hour Party People, A Bigger Splash, The Salesman, The Farewell, Cold War, If Beale Street Could Talk, Carol and, if you fancy some light relief, Requiem for a Dream.

The Invisible Man (2020)

Decent sci-fi/horror which started off with excellent suspense. The plot was good but got a bit weird at times and I felt the film didn't live up to expectations after such a promising start. That said it was a good watch and a solid 6/10 for me.

Watched Holidate yesterday. Not a good romcom(bit uneven, and just when I thought we had our happy ending, they tacked on the obligatory pseudo-breakup that added an unnecessary 30 min), but perfectly passable if you want to get your romcom fix.

Trial Of The Chicago 7
I love a courtroom drama and when is written by Sorkin, my interest is piqued even more. Really enjoyed it. Even Eddie Redmayne was good in it 7.5/10

Got me thinking...where have they gone? In the 90s you had Presumed Innocent, A Few Good Men, Philadelphia, The Devil's Advocate, Night Falls on Manhattan, The Rainmaker, Primal Fear, The People vs Larry Flynt, The Firm, A Time to Kill.

I guess they are expensive to make (as you need really good actors) and they will never gross profit like a superhero film or a horror so they're not made as much.

It's a different model with Netflix so that's probably why this got made.

Sure

Harlod encapsulates the soon to be world view of thatcherism. Britain(Or really the city of London)as a regenerated world super power leaving behind the crisis of the 70's and British social democracy in favour of the "free" market. As Harlod gleefully says "I'm not a politician; I'm a businessman, with a sense of history; and I'm also a Londoner. And today is a day of great historical significance for London. Our country's not an island any more."

I'm pretty sure it was the Marxist David Harvey who called neo liberalism a counter revolution, that's imo how Hopskins character see himself. As a sort revolutionary coming to Britain rescue(although really just using violence to enrich himself).

Even his view of Americans after they feck him over plays into a resentment British conservatism has of American become the new global superpower. "Us British, we're used to a bit more vitality, imagination, touch of the Dunkirk spirit, know what I mean? The days when Yanks could come over here and buy up Nelson's Column, a Harley Street surgeon and a couple of Windmill girls are definitely over! What I'm looking for is someone who can contribute to what England has given to the world: Culture. Sophistication. Genius. A little bit more than a hot dog, know what I mean? "

The I.R.A(who would go on to become Thatcherism biggest enemy)play as a sort equal opposite, they have have the same ideological strength in their ideas and the determination to carry out whatever is needed like Harlod but the difference and what causes the downfall for Hoskins is the inability of the I.R.A to be brought off.

I'm sure there's a ton of other stuff I'm missing as well.

Also it fun fact - The studio delayed the film and wanted cuts done because they were worried it be seen as pro I.R.A!!

Trial was actually planned by Paramount for a theatrical release though; it only ended up on Netflix due to the pandemic.

Agree it's a great film btw - and I'm also struggling to think of any other big recent courtroom dramas.

Also aren't they actually kinda cheap? They don't necessarily need the biggest names nor any VFX (which seems to be hugely expensive).

First bold part - I guess as it's based off a true story and something that's relevant today, it could have got theatrical release.

As for the second bold part, I would assume they can be made a bit cheaper but the profit will be miniscule as opposed to spending big on Wonderwoman and seeing the profits roll in.

First point: I don't know Paramount's thinking, I just read this on Wikipedia. There's a market for all kinds of films though. This may have done well with the serious crowd.

Same with the second point: luckily, we haven't gotten to a point yet where the big studios only go for blockbuster type movies! But what I meant is that the most expensive starts aren't necessarily the best actors for this genre, so getting great fitting, strong actors might not be as expensive. You also don't need a big name to carry the thing in an ensemble piece like this.

I watched the Judge on prime with Downey Jr recently which is a good court room drama. 8/10.

I inevitably enjoyed the Chicago 7 as I love Sorkin but I don’t feel they quite nailed it. I can’t put my finger on it but there were a few times where the absurdity of what was happening completely took you out of the film. After reading up on it amazingly the real thing was even more absurd but I still don’t think they quite sold it. When it’s good it is very good though and the cast were brilliant so 7.5/10.

Lincoln lawyer is pretty good too. But yeah there's a lot of genres dying these days. Even real comedy has been dead for years. Police academy, Airplane, early Adam Sandler movies

It should have been a comedy in the style of Doctor Strangelove. The event is too absurd to be a serious film imo.

Books of Blood

A journey into uncharted and forbidden territory through three tales tangled in space and time.
It is not the Clive Barker Books of Blood, but its is a decent horror. This is a collection of some nice scary stories. I liked the acting in general. Special effects, background music, and sound effects are good.
A decent watch.

7/10

Clownery

After a terrible trauma on her birthday, Emma chooses not to celebrate it again. But when she turns 21, a friend of her breaks the ritual with a surprise party, unaware of awakening horrors.
It was OK , had it moments, with an ending you could see coming.

6/10

Spell

A man crash lands in rural Appalachia and awakens in the attic of a traditional Hoodoo practitioner. He desperately tries to break free from her dark magic and save his family from a sinister ritual before the rise of the blood moon.
It was OK , nothing you have not seen before.

5/10

Wheels on meals starring Jackie Chan.
Silly fun, great martial arts action. No real story, some racial stereotypes, and a ton of offensive caricatures. 8/10.

Universal soldier knock-off Terminator/with a small element of Bourne. Felt like a movie that should have been written and directed by Verhoeven. 7/10.

So I have finally made a full run over the whole Marvel Cinematic Universe over the course of the last 2 months, skipping only 4 movies. Here's a quick opinion on everyone of them :

Iron Man 2008 : Very fun movie, probably one of the best origin stories for a super hero I have seen. RDJ is an incredible actor with insane charisma on screen it's just fun to watch and listen to him. 8/10.
Thor 2011 :
Decent movie, but a little bit forgettable. Could have been done better to be honest, and unfortunately didn't sell me that much on the character. Only a latter movie did, still a fun watch and important for the Avengers 2012 plot. 7/10.
Captain America First Avenger :
Mediocre. Didn't like it to be totally honest. America vs Nazi Germany is a topic I can't withstand in any media anymore. It's ridiculous how much it has been consumed. The action scenes were average and the American propaganda in it was honestly a little bit too much. I only started to like Cap as a character starting from the next 2 movies. 6/10
Avengers 2012:
Fantastic and epic experience. They did the first assembly absolutely right. 9/10.
Captain America Winter Soldier:
Great movie. Well written story, great pacing and action scenes. Between this and the first Iron Man, probably the best solo movies in the series. This is the movie that really sold me on the character. 8/10.
Guardians of Galaxy :
That's a movie I can call "stupid fun". Doesn't seem to take itself way too seriously probably till the very end and that would make it unique and fun to watch. Didn't expect to enjoy it that much since I knew jack shite about them from the start but it was a nice surprise. 8/10.
Avengers Age of Ultron
: Feel like this movie is way too hated for no reason. I think it's still a very fun ride, just weaker than the first Avengers movie. I do agree with the majority that Widow/Hulk romance wasn't a good idea and they both don't suit each other that much, and the final battle was weaker than 2012 film, but still really enjoyed it and had some great action. Iron Man vs Hulk was fantastic. 8/10.
Ant Man :
Very fun. Between this and the first Iron Man movie as well are the best origin story in the series (I seem to mention Iron Man movie a lot). 8/10.
Captain America : Civil War :
That was the best thing I have seen from the series up till the the Infinity War. A much more serious tone, a very unique villain, and great twists thrown at the end, I see people talking a lot about coincidence and while I agree there some of them, I think his plan would have worked anyway, the coincidence just made it work faster that's all. Last fight was epic and had a heavy weight on it. Also introducing Black Panther and Spidey. 10/10.
Doctor Strange :
Good movie. Just honestly nothing special. 7/10.
Spiderman Homecoming :
Second worst in the series from what I have seen for me. Terrible, rushed story, very poorly written villain, uninteresting action, and Spiderman was way too concerned about showing Tony how good he's than doing the right thing. Spiderman suit having an AI was honestly stupid. Tom Halland and RDJ acting was what saved it. Honestly don't understand the high reviews everywhere at all. 6/10.
Black Panther :
Very good movie. Just honestly a little bit overrated ? I have seen people talking about how it's political and how it's different..etc. There's nothing political about it, just because it happens in Africa and not America doesn't make it different or political, and the storytelling is pretty much the same Marvel trope., there's a hero, a villain and the hero as usual loses first then win at the end..etc. It's still fun but I honestly think the 9s and 10s are overrating. RIP Chadwick Boseman though. Was fantastic in every single scene he made in MCU in general. 8/10.
Guardians of Galaxy Vol 2 :
Much slower and more boring first half than first movie. Much better climax and emotional impact in second half than the first movie. I'll rate both equally but both have different strengths. First movie had better coherent story but second one's climax is way much better and more memorable. 8/10.
Thor Ragnarok:
Another movie that I can call "stupid fun". The movie doesn't take itself serious at all and realizes how ridiculous the story is. I laughed a lot several times in it. This is the movie that I really started to like Thor thanks to it. His development from this one throughout Infinity War and Endgame was incredible. 8/10.
Infinity War and Endgame :
Both are 10/10 easily. Both have some legendary scenes I'll never forget, ever. I have replayed several scenes from them since I last watched them and I can't get enough of some Endgame scenes. Incredible.
Ant Man and the Wasp : My main problem with this movie is I wasn't interested in the story at all. Not a single scene in it I felt I wanted to know what will happen next. Some enjoyment in some scenes along the ride but totally and completely forgettable. Only post credit scene matters to be honest. 6/10.
Captain Marvel :
Good movie. Feels like it's hated way too much because people didn't like the actress or the strong female trope, and I do agree the character itself is really boring ( I honestly hated her more after Endgame) but if we're talking about the movie, it was fun, well at least much more fun than Ant Man and the Wasp. The mystery in the first half and the twist midway were done well. Final battle was a little bit anticlimatic though. 7/10.
Spiderman Far From Home :
Definitely much, much better for me than Homecoming. This is a movie I felt it was really about Spidey, unlike Homecoming, and felt like I was reading a Spiderman comic book. The twist was of course predictable for anyone who read any comics for Spiderman but it overall a pretty fun and enjoyable watch. 8/10.

The Orphanage: Decided to watch this Spanish horror movie on Halloween night for some fun. Really enjoyed it - in some ways it's your typical spooky ghost story in a creepy old house but it deals with loss and grief really well also and it packs a serious emotional punch at the end. Plenty of atmosphere and a few good scares in it also. Overall I'd give it 8/10
