Film The Redcafe Movie review thread

Arctic Apocalypse

It is an Asylum Sci-Fi , so you know its not going to be good !
The acting is dreadful, the FX are worse.
There is one part where they are showing some aircraft, 4 different shots with 4 different type of aircraft !!
Huge ice storms are ravaging the world , but the roads are open and clear, airports open
Doesn't even fall into the category "it's so bad, it's good"!!

Not even worth a zero !

Border 2018 - one of the most disturbing films I've seen in recent times and hard to describe without spoiling it, but found it highly original and enjoyable. 8/10

Here's the IMDB synopsis, "A customs officer who can smell fear develops an unusual attraction to a strange traveler while aiding a police investigation which will call into question her entire existence".

Under the Silver Lake 2018 - Is fun but a bit of a misfire really. Constantly smacking you in the face with Hitchcock/Lynch references but if you can get past that it's actually a pretty enjoyable ride. Andrew Garfield wasn't as annoying as I expected. 7/10

Both sound excellent, added to my watch list.

Are you sure you didn’t just get high and watch It’s Always Sunny?

We summon the Darkness

Three best friends embark on a road trip to a heavy-metal show, where they bond with three aspiring musicians and head off to one of the girls' country home for an after-party.
It has a twist in it, but not a good one.
The film had potential , the story was decent but all it turned in to was a crappy 80's style slasher film , with not enough blood or killings for a slasher.

3/10

The Grudge (2020)

It was better than I expected.
A good solid film, It is more or less a drama / psychological thriller loosely tied to the original, not the horror it is billed as, but still very watchable.

6.5/10

Brahms: The Boy 2
After a family moves into the Heelshire Mansion, their young son soon makes friends with a life-like doll called Brahms. I didn't mind the first one but this was absolute boring trash. The doll still looks creepy and there were one or two jump scares but overall, this was slow and had nearly every bad horror trope in there. Give this a miss 3/10

I liked the first one, was planning to see this tonight, gutted its so bad.

Brahms: The Boy 2

Thought the first one was a decent horror, this had the potential to be better, the story was decent. but what they turned out was one of the shittest horrors for a long time.
The doll is creepy as feck, but it does no save the film, I agree with Dirty Schwien, avoid at all costs.
I was disappointed it was so bad !

2/10 just for the creepy doll.

The Dead Center
A hospital psychiatrist's own sanity is pushed to the edge when a frightened amnesiac patient insists that he has died and brought something terrible back from the other side. A slow burn psychological horror that implies a lot of the gore and doesn't show too much but that was fine as the film had such a creepy atmosphere. I just wish it had another layer or two to it as it felt a bit repetitive despite being only 90 minutes long 6.5/10

Ip Man 4: The Final Chapter
I enjoyed this. Not as good as the first two but better than the third. The fights are obviously not as good as they once were, which is understandable considering Donnie Yen is getting on a bit but they were good enough and the story was quite touching. I swear Scott Adkins is a Chinese martial artist stuck in an American's body  Loved how they used the guy from Shaolin Soccer (GK) who looks like Bruce Lee to play Bruce Lee. Just wish he had more screen time 7/10
Thought it was pretty great. I dug the way they shot the Bruce stuff; very Way of the Dragon meets West Side Story. Simple, accessible cinema made to a high standard. From watching this series you'd think that well made action entertainment is something easy to deliver, but then you remember Marvel and suddenly Ip Man looks something of an anomaly. These films demonstrate how a strong storytelling and filmmaking structure can accommodate even the more ridiculous elements.

I also like that a satisfying film can still be made from within the chop socky genre and that the "serious" art house directors aren't necessarily required to legitimise this stuff - despite what the critics might tell you.

Even as olds these Hong Kong action royalty still have it.

Extraction

Really enjoyed it. Kid gets kidnapped and Thor is called in to rescue the kid, but obviously things go wrong
Enjoyable action esp for a Netflix movie

Yeah watchable action film, good locations and decent enough cast.

21 Bridges

Similarly watchable to the above but on Prime. Interesting New York accent by Boseman.

Code 8
Ina world where some people have super powers, but it's illegal to use them, a man with powers joins a dangerous group to earn money for his dying mom. The world building was quite nice and I was invested to begin with but the film is boring without much action and filled with underdeveloped characters. If they make a sequel, they just need to let the action do the talking 4/10

Us

Yeah not for me this. Didn't scare me and the story wasn't the best. Not even the iconic Da Luniz 5 on it soundtrack could rescue it. I'm giving it at 4/10

Agreed. Don't understand why people loved this. The minute you think about the logistics of its narrative, it falls apart like Slippy G.

I haven't heard a single good review of it tbh. 'Shame, i loved Get Out' seems to be the default view

The reviews were generally positive, but I'm not sure many said it was "visionary genius" - and even if some thought so, it was definitely not an overwhelming consensus. I personally liked it and thought it was a good next step after Get Out which while it was tighter and ultimately more efficient in what it was saying, was less ambitious than Us - if anything, I felt Us tried to say too many things and suffered somewhat of it, but overall it was very interesting, and well put together with some wonderful scenes.

I also don't know what "logistics of its narrative" means.

Bitter Moon (1992)

That was...very interesting. Well worth a watch. Do these kind of movies even get made anymore?

Yea it did not add up for me.
As if so many people could live in tunnels unnoticed

It was not terrible granted.

I rewatched Rear Window for the first time in like a decade, liked it a lot more this time around. I had forgotten just how stunning Grace Kelly is in it, her introductory shot was startling in it's beauty. A perfect lockdown watch, you should watch it @Rooney in Paris

Ok boss. I also have been putting off Vertigo for years. Really need to get to it.

True history of the Kelly Gang: The punk decor was interesting, and Kurzel's arresting visual style is again on display, but the story was unengaging, the characters weakly drawn and it has an annoying voiceover. Starts and ends well but with a very boring middle. Was missing the weight of something like Dominik's Jesse James. Judy and Punch: Hated Foulkes' Sleeping Beauty but this one I really liked. A folky black comic reimagining of Mr Punch and wife. Much grimness but applied with a light touch. A bit on the nose but that's the way to do it.

Australians.

The Importance of Being Earnest (1952) - I very much would have liked for Joan Greenwood to whisper stuff in my ear with that voice.

Obviousy, it was kinda hard to elevate it past it's stage background but the excellent script and performances made it eminently watchable still.

I saw it a few months back. Very good, although I couldn't quite grasp his reluctance about his relationship with Grace Kelly, who was absolutely stunning. The panning shots of the neighbours and the way the tension ramped up when Grace went on her mission was great.
I also didn't mind Disturbia, the remake with Shia Labeouf. :nervous:

Even whilst climbing up fire escapes and into windows in a plush summer dress she retained an angelic grace.

Watched "Border" last night on your recommendation.

A creepy, gross and at times very moving film, which covered some really dark subject matter.
I found all the characters detached and cold and sometimes hard to look at, yet they were all engaging and very well acted.

I'm not sure what to think about it really but I'm glad I watched it. Even if I did get some very weird dreams last night.

7.5/10

Curtiz

Dull. Didn't really know who was who and the big clash of personalities was fecking boring. They got the production right at least but the soundtrack was an annoying constant too. Right to not have someone try and do Bogie though.

Demolition man 8/10

Rewatched this gem of a film. Never get tired of watching it. Love it. The action, the cheesy lines. Snipes and Stallone are entertaining as hell. Also it's the one future that's the most accurate by far.

Hell after this virus, this is the new high five.

A Fist Full of Dollars

I'm trying to work my way through the trilogy as I've only ever seen the third movie. It's obviously not as good as as The Good, The Bad and The Ugly, but it also doesn't require an entire evening to watch coming in at around an hour and forty minutes. Eastwood is excellent as the cold calculating gun slinger playing two sides off against each other for his own gain. Also his hair is phenomenal. Overall it's a good way to spend an hour and a half. It's some bad men outsmarting and outshooting each other.

7/10

Project A

I think I saw this once back in the 90's and for some reason didn't like it much back then, but upon watching it again it's actually great. The stunt work is absolutely phenomenal, the bar fight/kung fu battle/slap stick comedy section was amazing. The bike chase is a work of genius. The stunt work is ridiculously good. How in the name of feck is Jackie Chan still alive? The slow motion fall from the clock tower where he lands on his head was bad enough, but then they showed a replay and it looked very much like he did it several times because those were not the same fall. Yuen Baio's agility is unreal. I remember seeing an interview where someone said Sammo before a scene told them to hit him as hard as possible and not hold back because he would do the same in return to make the fight look better. There were a few times in this film where Sammo was just levelling people, one in particular where he drop kicked someone in the back and you could tell it fecking hurt. There seemed to be a noticeable difference between him hitting people and the others hitting them.

The story is pure ridiculous 80's Hong Kong nonsense, but it's all in service to the action.

8/10

Extraction

A bit like Project A in that the story is pure nonsense and doesn't stand up to much scrutiny, but it's in service to 2 hours of almost non-stop action. Most of which is very good. Chris Helmsworth is a drunk dude hired to rescue a drug dealers son by another dude. There's a woman involved and some other dudes. So half the city gets shot up, car chases ensue, there's brutal hand to hand and knife combat. Explosions and crashes galore. It's a lot of fun, but the story bits were a bit pants and it could have used a bit of a trim to the run time.

Some of the explosions and crashes looked a bit computer generated. It felt at times like it was supposed to be a movie for the Indian special forces guy(who was awesome), but then they decided they needed an international lead to sell it outside of India. That might not be what happened and just a weird way of saying the Indian special forces guy felt like he could have carried this film just as well as Helmsworth if given the chance. I dunno his name and looking it up feels like effort that I'm not prepared to make.

Ah, I'm gonna have to do a Jackie Chan Appreciation day. Only his early stuff though. Love Project A and of course that bicycle chase. The dialogue was terrible in that film if I remember correctly. When the cops were singing that song "Sing Pee Pee!" or something like that, it was awful. Obviously didn't translate into English very well. I had a major crush on Brigitte Lin in Police Story. What was the film when the stuntmen fell from the top of a bus onto the floor and missed the car they were supposed to land on? They left that take in even though the guys were rolling on the floor obviously hurt.

Yeah the dialogue is awful, but at the same time it has a kind of old time simplicity to it. An almost childish innocence at times. I'm not sure, I think it was the first Police Story as that did have a lot of bus action. The best thing about an early Jackie Chan marathon is Hwang Jang Lee (or whatever he called himself while filming then as his name kept changing) as the villain in Snake in the Eagles Shadow and Drunken Master. He was fecking awesome with his kicking. Is Who Am I? Jackie Chan's last great film?

I've been delighted that Eureka are releasing old kung fu classics on blu ray and been happily buying away at them. Just ordered Zu Warriors from the Magic Mountain which also had Brigitte Lin along with Sammo and Yuen Baio. I think it helped inspire John Carpenter make Big Trouble in Little China too. I just wish they would do Ninja in the Dragon's Den soon.

Yeah he went all Hollywood after that with his Rush Hour, Shanghai Noon, Kung Fu Panda efforts and the damn awful The Tuxedo, The Medallion movies. I've seen Gorgeous a few times (still have it on DVD) but don't really remember much about it. The fecker's nearly 70 and still going.

Great shout with Zu. Forgot about that one. Boy, Brigitte Lin was fecking gorgeous.
