Gaming The RedCafe General/Random Gaming Chat Thread

Yeah it's weird how the human AI is still better than pretty much every shooter out there. I've always thought the only game that did this consistently better was the first F.E.A.R. and, well, I still struggle to think of anything better. It's like developers eventually just gave up trying to improve AI.
Deus Ex (the original one) had a good AI too. The most fun was going near the criminals, shooting them and then running on the direction of a policeman while the criminal was shooting at me, making the police killing them.

I can't say I ever noticed a particularly smart AI in Deus Ex. The scenario you describe is more about the player abusing a limited AI than an example of good AI.

What made the AI so good in Half-Life and F.E.A.R. was how well the enemies function as a team. There's constant movement, shifting positions to get a better angle on you, trying to flush you out and rushing you when you're distracted. These are all basic things that pretty much all other shooters fail to achieve. It has to be said that the excellent level design in both games played a major role in this, creating opportunities for both the player and the enemies to exploit. This is where most shooters already fail.

What's particularly disappointing about all this is how much of a step back Half-Life 2 and F.E.A.R. 2 were in this area.

People want graphics and to be fooled into thinking the world is vibrant, which is easier to fake. Lool at RDR2 for example, there's very little going on anywhere. A.I has taken a massive backstep since the early 2000's, Halo 1 was probably the last step up and as said above, F.e.a.r the last title to actually do something with it.
Not sure I agree. It is more that it hasn't advanced rather than taking a step back, but now it looks worse compared with the other aspects of the games which have advanced in a very rapid manner.

I guess that the main reason for that was that AI in games was never really AI, more like a simple rule-based system which kind of give the impression that it is intelligent. And that has a very low ceiling.

I think that it is very possible to make the AI in video games much better, but there seems to be little to no interest from video game producers to do so. Funnily enough, the biggest advancements on that field in the last few years has been coming from AI companies, like the example of OpenAI who gave a very good performance (though still lost) against pro players (5 vs 5) in a complex strategic game like DOTA. Pretty sure that if there is will, the same techniques can be used to make really cool advancements in that aspect.

Sorry, I worded that a bit odd, by backstep I meant more backseat. As in it's the least important thing.

The problem is they generally use a.i engines and as you say don't properly anyway. I doubt any teams these days have anyone who actually specialises in a.i or knows much about it other than basic engine scripting.

Bought spyro reignited trilogy and sorta bummed out. It's kinda what I remember it, but being a kid it seemed way bigger, and I can't remember the camera being a bag of wank.

Only completed the first area/levels 100% so far. Suppose it's not bad for £35 and getting the three games. Kids and Mrs will probably like it.

I'm the same. Thought I'd get the same nostalgia buzz I got from the Crash remaster which I enjoyed a lot but it's not quite the same.

I felt with crash I could die, with spyro I don't, too easy in a way, don't remember the 2nd and 3rd as much so hope they add a bit more.

It does look lovely though and will be great for kids tbh

I loved Spyro back in the day, but it was always an absolute shitberg of a camera.

Yeah I think they are currently undervalued
They made a lot of popular games back in the day that got a few and might get a few more remasters to help with public perception, they generally let EA take the main heat for doing scumbaggy moves towards the gaming-community and follow up with slightly less obvious scammy-practices so they get less negative press. In the world of informed gamers they are both horrible companies that we will do our best to stay away from, which can be hard for some as they have game-series like call of duty & destiny while also owning the rights to old goldies like the Tony Hawk's series.

In other words they are EA, just not as much talked about. They do well for their shareholders (I assume). They also have a partnership with Blizzard going, but I'm not sure if that has any effect on the shares. Hell I know barely anything about shares.
If I were to invest in something purely for money-reasons it would be EA first, since they get way too much money from people buying the same sports-games every year & Activision second because people can't seem to not buy a reskin of call of duty every year either, and both fill their games with microtransactions in order to get as much money as possible. I hope as a gamer that companies like EA & Activision gets their due in a few years as I hope even casual games understand the negative things they bring to the gaming-industry and boycott them to a larger degree, but even in that utopia I think we'd see EA go a fair bit before Activision so you could get a heads up if you kept tabs on EA while investing in Activision.

If I however wanted to invest in a company that I think will do great over a long period of time it would be CD Project Red as they have a lot of good-will in the gaming community & aim to make great games that sell & play well. Assuming I wouldn't want to be daring about it I'd wait and see how cyberpunk ends up doing as it's theme that I don't think will reach into the main-stream beyond the initial hype because of who the developers are. If they can make a cyberpunk game go mainstream I'd say they are a safe place to invest in.

Would be pretty cool, aye. Wipeout is still the best non-standard racer for me, though :D

Anyway, anyone playing Mutant Year Zero?

Not yet. I saw a couple of good reviews earlier though so I'll probably get it sooner rather than later. You played it yet? If so, what's your verdict?

Nah I haven't. Friend linked it to me recently & I thought it looked interesting, but with the Steam sale coming up in just a few weeks, buying a new game at full price without anyone I know/trust having given their feedback doesn't really seem sensible :D Hoping to get some opinions before I decide whether or not to jump in.

Company of Heroes 2 currently free on Steam.

CSGO now has a Battle Royale... And it looks good?

I'll be trying it this weekend. Played Ring of Elysium a couple of times too and that has a bit of promise.

Fun times. I've re-installed CS myself, ready to get some chicken dinners :D I like that it's seemingly smaller scale, and CS gunplay is top tier, so it should be fun!

I haven't played in years, and even then never played GO. My boy has graduated from Fortnite to it and is doing well, so I should relearn the ropes in no time :)

I'm not sure this free to play thing is going to be great for those of us who aren't cheating scumbags though. Unless they've finally bothered with some form of anti-cheat software.

Don't they have some sort of mobile authentication nowadays? I can't remember what it's called, but it's something like you have to tie your CS account to a mobile number, and if any account associated with that number is found guilty of cheating, then they'll never be able to use that number again.

Just read something about the first Gamers' Choice Awards (see here: http://www.gamerschoice.tv/) and, seeing those categories and winners, the only thing I can conclude is that I'm completely and utterly out of touch with the current gaming community. I mean, what the feck is this: "Fan Favorite Gaming Moment presented by HyperX: Drake plays with Ninja"? :wenger:

Streaming is a huge thing now, and that moment was a defining point.

I'm really not against that side of gaming becoming so popular these days, in fact it's a good thing for gaming. Ninja and his ilk are proper gamers and they are having more and more influence in what companies do, it's leading to things like Epic rivaling Steam and pushing Sony to relax their stupid cross platform rules to boot. They are also highlighting cheating, bad business practices and most importantly they are all doing charity streams to help genuine causes along the way.

It's no longer about watching people play games, it's a new form of entertainment and one that's free and so far fair.

It's not that I'm against it, it's that I don't understand the appeal of it. I'm also completely uninterested in competitive gaming (i.e. Fortnite and others), so that probably doesn't help.

It's not competitive gaming. It's entertainment.

Think of them like tv channels, where you can just watch exactly what you want and also get involved if you feel like it. For free.

I watched someone hunt shiny Pokemon on twitch far longer than I care to admit the other night
