The RedCafe Boxing Thread

To be fair I'd never heard of him. But then I'm no boxing fanatic. I just enjoy following the Brits.

When I did some digging though his record is good and I was worried about his power. Thankfully it was never an issue tonight seeing as he can't take a punch. Granted the 2 knockdowns were both firm shots but you wouldn't expect either to result in a knockdown and certainly not have the effect that 2nd one had!

Still, well chuffed though! Title fight then a fight with Khan to follow. Lovely stuff.

heard Devon Alexander may actually be vacating his belt and a domestic dust up between Khan and Brook, could be very interesting and very close to call although I would hope Brook won if it happened.

Shame. I would really like top see Brook - Alexander. Do you know why he is vacating? I think that Brook has a great style for Kahn and would back him to KO him.

Emanuel Steward, who trained legendary fighters Thomas Hearns, Lennox Lewis and Wladimir Klitschko among many others, has died at the age of 68.

As an amateur boxer, Steward won 94 of his 97 fights and a National Golden Gloves bantamweight title in 1963.

He made his name as a trainer at the Kronk gym in Detroit and Hilmer Kenty became his first world champion in 1980, followed by Hearns the same year.

Steward handled more world champions than any other trainer, 43 in all.

Hearns, who had been suffering from colon cancer, was perhaps most closely associated with Hearns, whom he first trained as an amateur at the fabled Kronk.

Having built the Kronk into an amateur boxing super-power, Hearns and Kenty came close to making the 1976 Olympic team.

And in March 1980, Kenty became Steward's first pro world champion when he won the WBA lightweight crown, also becoming the first world champion from Detroit since heavyweight great Joe Louis decades earlier.

Under Steward, Hearns became the first boxer to win world titles in five weight divisions and engaged in classic fights with Sugar Ray Leonard, Roberto Duran and Marvin Hagler.

Steward linked up with Lewis following the British heavyweight's defeat by Oliver McCall in 1994 and the partnership endured until Lewis's retirement in 2004.

Steward was immediately enlisted by Wladimir Klitschko and, having lost his WBO belt to Corrie Sanders in 2003, the Ukrainian became world champion again in 2006.

Steward's roster of fighters reads like a who's who of boxing greats, with Wilfred Benitez, Julio Cesar Chavez, Oscar de la Hoya, Evander Holyfield, Mike McCallum and James Toney also trained by him.

British greats trained by Steward, who was inducted into the International Hall of Fame in 1996, are former light-heavyweight world champion Dennis Andries and former featherweight world champion Naseem Hamed.

Just watched the Frankie Gavin- Junior Witter fight, not a great fight but glad Gavin won to become British champion, Britain has some good fighters in that Welterweight division.

Time for Witter to retire I think but I've never liked him anyway.

Anyone watching the fight tonight?

 Just me then?...I will keep you all posted.

Be a shame if this fight gets stopped by that horrendous cut on Bellew's eyebrow.

Bellew put in a mature performance, I was impressed. This is just a nice little earner for Froch. Mack could of got up if he wanted. He look OK at the ring announcement at the end. Marcos Maidana got up from a much more savage body shot than that against Khan.

That was brutal again by Froch, truly is one the great British fighters and I'm glad he is starting to get some respect.

I have a good feeling he will be Kessler in a rematch, nobody really needs to see him fight Bute again.

Dunno why Bute would want a rematch- get taken apart again for the cash?

Froch was in a different league tonight. Thought the guy went down a bit easy on the first knock down. Fairly unusual to see a body shot be the knock out punch in the end, but tbf, I bet it fecking hurt.

Broner just put the pound game on De Marco, managed to get him out of there quicker than Valero too! The boy is special

Doesn't really say much. Valero won every single round on every single card until they pulled him out in the 9th. A guy with the style of Broner is always going to find it easy to tag a guy like De Marco. De Marco is far from being an elite fighter

A lot of folk think that Broner was lucky to get a decision over Ponce De Leon and he has an MD win over a nobody. He has a great KO percentage but I am not getting on the hype train just yet.

I think that Ricky Burns is a great fight for Broner. Burns will bring Broner some interesting problems.

Valero also had serious punching power so it would be expected that he get rid of De Marco quicker than Broner. Very impressive performance last night

Is the Hatton fight on Box Nation this weekend?

Does anyone give a shit?
