The Quality of Manchester United's Squad

It’s comfortably worse in my opinion with the caveat that India are clearly planning for many of our first team to be (hopefully) elite in 2-3 years.

It’s crazy when you look through our team and see how many starters we have that should really be playing back up to a senior player.
I know a few Liverpool fans and they say we have some quality in the squad but lack discipline and leadership, aswell as an actual style.

Our defence is nearly there based on what? We have conceded 3 goals in 3 matches already this season.

We have no LB that stays fit. De Ligt and Maguire are basically the same player. I like our RB options if Dalot actually played RB and the manager dropped the inverted positional nonsense.

We have gambled €70m on a kid with a high ceiling. I don’t think that’s what we need right now when we knew we would go into the season without a fit LB, and the lack of striker options.
Based on me trying to be positive

I do feel that under a better coach De Ligt and Mazraoui are solid. And fingers crossed Yoro lives up to the potential.

But yeah, it's slim pickings.

In fairness, the back 4 have shown that they can be solid so far this season.

But our attack is further away for me.

UTD is proper mid table this year. Gonna be somewhere between 6th - 9th place finish.

Our squad is atrocious.

I don't know why people think/thought we had an amazing summer window, we didn't.

I'm also getting worried about Ineos and the backroom staff now.

Didn't sack Ten Hag when they had the chance and let him dilute our squad by spending more money on average players.

We genuinely don't have one top class player in our attack, never mind world class. Top class. Zero.

There are mid table teams with a better attack than Manchester United.

The fact that we didn't prioritise a legitimate striker (Toney for eg) is criminal. We can't score goals.

Too many younger players who might develop into Manchester United quality being asked to play nearly every game and perform at a level currently beyond them.

Mainoo, Amad, Garnacho, Hojland, Zirkzee etc should be given minutes here and there.

Mainoo in particular is being worked into the ground. His performances are on the decline.

Can't argue with any of that. Talking to my Dad today and he was saying McTominay and Wan Bissaka would still improve this squad.

I think the overall quality is not the issue. It's why we occasionally play well and do ok. But we haven't had a defined style of play in years and that is solely the coaches fault.

It makes all the players look worse than they are.

It’s a better side than this manager has them playing like.

It’s horribly imbalanced — and that’s down to the manager and his staff signing profiles that don’t complement each others style.

Individually on a pound for pound basis - it’s a top six side. The top three teams in England are a tier above us, but take them out of the equation and we are (and very much should be!!) on a level playing field with the next three/four teams in the PL.

We would all agree that the way we play maximises every player's weaknesses and minimises their strengths. We can't really, then, assess the quality of the squad.

Truth is somewhere in the middle, probably. Our forwards are very young, inexperienced, and it shows. Players like Bruno and Martinez aren't as good as we think while players like Maguire, Evans are better than we think.

There's still clear work to be done in midfield, LB and attack. But I think we've some good depth.

Main issue is that we have very few players who are technical and have pace/running power. I can only think of Shaw, Bruno, and Garnacho. One is injured and the other two are out of form.

In general our squad is vastly overrated. Lots of fans thought we had a good transfer window and a decent chance to finish top 4.

I still think our summer was a good window, but it's something we haven't really seen the benefit of at all yet other than in terms of depth. I hope that players like De Ligt, Mazraoui and Ugarte will eventually improve us notably, but it's still early days for them.

Bigger issues than the squad imo, which still has its issues but shouldn't be 14th in the table on paper

We definitely have squad quality issues in certain areas but I would be interested to see how a top coach would get the best out of this squad.

I'm still not sure that our players are anywhere near as bad as our current performance levels suggest.

We need to balance our first team and stop picking players based on reputation and with good tactics I think we are a top 5 / 6 team at least.
