Shit, you just described a player we haven't had in a team for years.

The man has better work rate and attitude then 99% of our players, bar Bruno.
His set pieces are probably in the 1% of best in the world.

Those two alone make him an ideal player to look for.

He averages around 9 goals per season, which we're badly lacking from our midfielders.

He's 28.

He's fecking good, don't kid yourself. Miles better then Fred or Scott, and on his day, he's on par with an ageing Casemiro and Eriksen.

I was hoping that Leicester don't get relegated as I see them as potential buyers for Dean Henderson. But if they do, Maddison and Castagne are two players of theirs which could do a squad job for us. But it's all wishful thinking to be honest. No one in our footballing structure is capable of pulling off a smart, low cost deal.

It’s not about what we don’t have, it’s about what we need. What we need is press resistant midfielder to play the way how ten Hag wants in that Eriksen‘s role. To make it easier to understand, take a look at this example of midfielder that ten Hag wanted last summer so you can understand the criteria: Is Frenkie de Jong good free kick taker, good crosser, and good shooting? The answer is NO. But he‘s press resistant and can pass the ball. I should be the one who said ‘’don’t kid yourself’’ because JWP ain’t that kind of midfielder, he’s an average midfielder because he’s not good at what midfielder does. The main aspect of CM is not about how to cross and take free kick.

By all means.

If we can land FDJ, it's a no brainer.
But what if we can't? What if we spend the whole transfer diddling over the same crap like we did last year?

And JWP is available for peanuts? 15-20 million?

I'm not arguing we should build our team out of relegation fodder - what i am saying is - if available out of all the relegation fire-sale options, Ward-Prowse is a no brainer himself.
 
We could rescue a couple of forwards from Leeds for small beans if they go down: Rodrigo, Gnonto maybe. They even have a Greenwood; sure we could even use the jerseys if our one doesn't play again. Winner winner, chicken dinner!
 
JWP would start for us over Eriksen imo and Salisu would be a better player to compete at CB than Maguire or Lindelof have been for us.

Lavia is potentially very good, possibly another Caicedo but certainly not on JWP or Caicedo's level yet with age on his side. And Bella Kotchup has the potential to be better than Salisu and could perhaps become a top CB which Salisu may not.

I would think its a no brainer to recruit 1 of the 4 players this summer depending on who Southampton allow to leave. And double deals dont happen that often so it would probably just be 1.

Gnonto at Leeds, we saw for ourself what he can do but not sure we need another player who wants to play wide left. Struijk has been playing LB, would probably be more dependable than Malacia has been but not exactly a priority.

You don’t get it. I said we should sign a CM that meets the profile and it doesn’t have to be Frenkie de Jong. Read it man!

Being able to take free kick and crossing but shit passer, shit ball retention, and shit in press resistant is not the profile of CM that we should be looking for because CM who isn’t good at two of those three things is just an average midfielder for top club, and that’s JWP. Don’t add another deadwood, sign the right player!
 
I think Maddison would do just as well as Eriksen in the Erkisen role. Probably better.

Maddison has a better engine and better pressing and is equally good with his creativity. The only downside is that he's slightly worse with his long passing. But I think he more than makes up for that with his superior dribbling. In fact, that dribbling/press resistance will likely make him a closer match to FdJ so that might even be something EtH prefers.

And i agree, it definetly should be FDJ.
He was, and probably still is, Erik's no.1 choice.

I don't however agree that Ward-Prowse is a shit passer. He averages passes per game and pass completion the likes of Eriksen and Bruno.
I wouldn't call either of them shit passers.
And he plays for relegation awaiting Southampton.

I think he'd be a great update to the team.

If both Leicester and Southampton go down, and both James Maddison and James Ward-Prowse were available, i'd still pick JWP.

Don't think that Ward-Prowse is good enough to be a regular starter here but he wouldn't be a bad rotation option. Would also be handy to be able to bring him on in games where we need a goal in the last 20-30 minutes, his set-pieces would almost guarantee creating a chance in that time. He seems pretty loyal to Southampton but heading into a season with the Euro's at the end he's clearly going to want to be playing in the PL.
I wonder if they'd be interested in loaning him out for a year? He gets to stay in the PL, they get him back if they're promoted and if not he's contracted for a couple of years so would still get a decent fee.

If we're on a low budget I wouldn't be against a possible move for Vardy either depending on the circumstances. If we sign someone like Hojlund, having an experienced striker to share that role with him would be useful. Not had a good season but he's probably more reliable than Martial and an obvious upgrade on Weghorst. Considering everything he's done at Leicester and his age, might be possible they'd let him go for free if they go down?

Vardy? He's too old and injured too often. We'd have a bench full of knackered strikers on silly money that only play a dozen times per season. When we finally sign a striker I hope to feck he's under 25.
 
Think the fact Ward-Prowse has only two assists in the league this season is an indication of how important having a top-tier set piece taker is.

Depends what you mean by no brainer. I think that might be quite literal when it comes to buying players from relegated teams that have been around a decade and never looked anything more than decent to good over that time in their midfield play.

Why on earth do that when he's got a midfield partner who is a teenager and putting in just as good if not better performances. Costs more but is far more valuable for a reason. That would be the real head scratcher.

Buying JWP is like buying Kalvin Phillips. That's the class of player he is and look what a non entity he is when surrounded by the genuine quality we're trying to reach over the next few years. We need people that are top quality or high potential.
 
I'm surprised there's not more mention of Tyler Adams. We are in need of a defensively solid DM-backup to Casemiro, preferably a relatively young and reasonable option, and I believe Adams can be just that. His defensive stats look very solid this season and he seems like a good passer as well as being tidy in possession. He might not be a creative wizard but in the DM-role I think he could be a great backup to Casemiro.

The only area of the team where we should really be investing in ‘squad options’ is in Casemiro’s position. We can add ST to that too if we can offload Martial.

Other than that we need players to come straight in and improve our 1st XI or properly challenge those there (eg. signing a CB to genuinely challenge Varane).
 
As it stands its between Southampton, Leeds, Leicester, Forest and Everton. From those teams:

Southampton: Lavia, Bella Kotchap,.

Leeds: no one

Leicester: Maddison, Tielemans

Forest: Gibbs White, Johnson

Everton: Onana

All this is considering they'll all be bargains. The only one for who I'll pay good money is Lavia.

Can understand that. Just think he's a very smart footballer who keeps retention of the ball, and could be available and a good option.

Agreed on Lavia, I think he's mint and we should definitely be targeting him.

I’d snap him up for a back-up / last 10min Hail Mary when we’re camped outside a box, he’d be more lethal than most of our current forwards.

I would also expect him to be quite cheap due to age, wages in Championship, only a year left on contract.

Plus, with him not being the main ST there wouldn’t be such a demand on him re: playing time and injuries.
