The Old Firm Derby

That's exactly what I was talking about before, a masturbatory set-piece nothing to do with supporting the team on the pitch.

Well 3,000 of us made more noise than Celtic when the game actually started after their fanshow shite.

It's as poxy as the Mexican wave - for people who think what they're doing is more important than the game.

That kid Matthews looked really good for Celtic tonight. Healey and Lafferty are dirty bastards.

First time I've watched Scottish football in years, I actually enjoyed that match, was very exciting for many different reasons. Might watch a few more if I get the chance.

Matthews looks very good. Agreed.

A lot of strange posts on this thread. Anyone watching an Old Firm match played in 50mph plus winds and heavy rain to see a game for the purist was only watching so they could post how sh!te the game was.

All in all it was a tough competative game played in a great atmosphere. More than watchable for anyone who cares about football.

You know it hasn't been a great game when Samaras is one of the best performers.

He has actually performed quite well of late. His most consistant season in a Celtic shirt.

And those calling these 2 Scottish sides a shower of shite, did you see how Celtic did in an Extremely difficult EL group? They were eliminated by a whisker. They held Udinese to a 1-1 draw in Italy (could have nearly won it), and were extremely unlucky to get beat by Athletico Madrid, 1-0. I absolutely guarentee the ones in this thread giving Celtic and Rangers abuse for their shite quality of players are ones who haven't watched any games this season.

Like what has been stated before, the quality of the league is purely down to the absurd amount of money they receive. The only way these teams can really survive in Europe is by getting the odd appearance in the CL which inject a decent amount of cash into the club which they can invest in better players. But I do feel for the Scottish fans a bit (my brother a huge Celtic fan), it's a vicious circle.

The lowest team in the EPL receives more money from TV rights than the entire SPL combined. Just shows what the Scottish teams are up against.

I'm only bothered about the Old Firm results as I then know who will be in the pub after the game and who will be in hiding.

It's importatnt to each set of fans but nobody outside of the Old Firm really cares much for them one way or the other.

I'd love to see the rise of another Aberdeen to spice things up a bit but i'm not holding my breath.

As for the sectarian 'bagage' that comes with the Old Firm - a lot of the younger fans play on it as it makes them think 'there's more to it than just football' but in all honesty few of them really understand what it's about. The media in Scotland play on it to for obvious reasons but have to pretend to condone it.

As for the atmosphere - Ibrox and Parkhead (sorry Celtic Park) are dire most of the time. Old Firm games can generate a decent atmosphere but (like big games in England) it needs to be a humdinger of a game to get anywhere near to years gone by.

Also don't see why so many people feel the need to mention the standard of Scottish football being comparatively poor every time there is a thread on the subject. So are the Irish and Welsh leagues but most don't bother pointing it out every time a game is televised.

Thats because Irish and Welsh leagues have accepted that they are shit and that their top 2 teams shouldn't be anywhere near being touted as walk-ins to the English Premier League

Celtic and Rangers have yet to embrace the fact that they are shit, their league is shit and their players are mid-table players at best

Yes but given our money and 4/5 seasons in the premier league they'd be challenging for titles. They're two of the biggest clubs in the world.

The best they could hope for is Europa League places (winning Carling/FA Cup)

The top 6 are light years ahead of them and would continue to be if Celtic & Rangers were in the PL.

They need at least 5 years or so to get to top 6 status

by that time, the top 6 in England would be miles ahead again

With regards to what? Whether they're big clubs? Whether they'd compete given the money?

I don't understand why you're underestimating these clubs history or potential.

When thinking of the worlds biggest clubs i'd say these spring to mind right away:

Barcelona
Real Madrid
Man United
Liverpool
Arsenal
Celtic
Rangers
Bayern Munich
Inter Milan
AC Milan

Given the opportunity and the money they'd be amongst the biggest clubs in the premier league, easily. There's absolutely no question about it.

Let's not dwell on how long it would take or how they'd fare initially.

We're all in agreement that given time they'd be amongst the top 5 teams in the league? Surely?

They would be no bigger than Newcastle or Aston Villa

Why would it? They're huge clubs with great history and support. There's nothing stopping them attracting players. I fail to see how they wouldn't compete given time.

Both Clubs would need to invest about £250m just to challenge the top 6

Some of you are underestimating the size of these clubs.

You have to remember Celtic were the first British club to win the Eurpean Cup. They did it before we did. They were also the first British club to reach two finals.

Their attendances would match if not beat any team in England. Celtic hold Europes club record attendance (136,000 v Leeds).

Celtic and Rangers have; a better stadium, a bigger world wide fan base, a bigger stadium, more local fans, and more passionate fans. The only thing you could argue is that between the Scottish Clubs there are less people in the 90 minute radius, but that rule has gone now anyway.

I genuinely wouldnt rate them in that company now.

Thats just like including Forest because they won the European Cup

How's it like including Forest? I'd have included Ajax and Juve as well.

I've stated above several further reasons: This post highlights a few of them

They're miles bigger clubs than anyone else in the UK other than Liverpool, United and Arsenal. I'd put them in 3rd and 4th positions, personally.

If you gave Celtic and Rangers the money and the abilty to attract players that playing in the Prem would then you would have 2 more big clubs with aspirations of big clubs. Add to that the marketablity of the clubs and you have to think they wouldnt struggle for investors. They would be a force in 3-5 years.
