My guess is Neymar.

EDIT: Eh wrong forum, mods please move it.

That's probably another 4/5 years away. Maybe another Barcelona wizzkid will hit the scene. Wrong section, btw.

Yep but I can't move or delete the thread gg. And I think the earliest someone else will win it is 2016, and if that's the case, I'll be surprised if we don't know that player already.

Eden Hazard IMO. At Real. Bale or Neymar would be a good shout too. Even Di Maria if he keeps playing like this.

Most probably neymar. Would be nice to see Di Maria get it though :D . The problem with these awards is that it rewards goalscorers more than players who do other things like assisting or defending or even goalkeeping.

I'm not sure it'll still be that early. Even though both look a tier below what they were a year or two ago (mainly Messi here) both are still putting in outrageously incredible statistics, and these are also in the Champions League. With Messi also now withdrawing into a deeper role with more facets to attack with (Suarez and Neymar) his overall game looks like it could elevate to a different sort of level than before.

Di Maria would normally have a very good claim for it this year. Best player in the biggest game for his club (and throughout the season, perhaps Reals 2nd most important player), a good/very good world cup in which he was very important (most important?) for a finalist team and now starting his season off on fire.

I've never minded this though. The truth is, scoring goals is the most important thing in football, so I don't have a problem with goalscorers being more likely to win these awards than defenders or goalkeepers.

Messi is 27 right now and I don't see Di Maria coming close to him in the next few years, and Di Maria is "already" 26 years old.

It'll be someone like Hazard/Neymar/Götze who will compete once Messi declines.

AdM was actually poor this world cup, IMO.

Scored the winning goal in the round 16 but was generally wasteful and when it looked like he was contributing, he got injured.

But yeah, he was integral to Madrid, especially during the second half of the season where he was their best player.

But I doubt he even gets top 3.

Neymar. Certainly been exceptional so far this season, but I don't see him taking the mantle of talisman from Messi for a few years yet. I reckon that might coincide with a slight drop-off from Ronaldo too, seeing as he will be 31/32.

It's not just the dropping levels of the big 2 (more Messi than Ronaldo), it's also the rising level of others. Di Maria for example has been getting better and better for a couple seasons in a row now, and looks to be continuing the the trend here. Guys like Bale, Suarez, and Neymar are now in the Clasico clubs and are all performing consistently at a high level. Hazard also has the potential to be up there in a season or 2.

Group stages he seemed to be in flight mode after a long season but scored that winner in Ro16 and did he assist that Messi late winner against Iran as well?
I know it doesn't count, but how badly he was missed in the final was an indicator of how important he was.

Would be cool to see someone who wasnt a forward get it.

Yeah, hasn't been one since Kaka and that was 7 years ago (and he was also the last person to win it before the current 2 dominated the award). Unless you're one of those people that counts Kaka as a forward because he was an attacking player, then it would be Fabio Cannavaro, 8 years ago.

Yeah, no arguments there. He was badly missed in the final as he was seemingly getting some form but also, a world class player can turn a game in an instant through his quality. So yeah.

I don't disagree, but I think Messi, Mascherano, Garay, Romero were all on better form for them. Debatably some of the other defenders as well.

Probably Cannavaro, though agreed, Kaka was more of an attacking/advanced mid, than a forward, in the sense that Ronaldo and Messi is.

After this season, except Ronaldo and Messi, candidates are Robben, Zlatan, Neymar if Messi gets injured. Don't know what would happen if Chelsea did a league and Champions League double, with Diego Costa as top scorer or Hazard in his best form ever. If Ronaldo or Messi have a great season individually with no trophies, they'd probably still get voted #1.

2016 winner might be a stand out player at Euro 2016. Iniesta or Fabregas for Spain, perhaps Costa. But if Germany would win it and Mùller had a great season at Bayern too, he might win it. And if Ronaldo would do fairly well that tournament and has a brilliant club season, he'll win it again, with Messi being the other obvious candidate if he has a good season at Barca in 2015/2016.

A midfielder or defender to win it would be nice for a change. Pogba after France win Euro 2016?

I think Hazard is still some distance behind the likes of Neymar and Bale.

Yeah, I still don't see 'it' with Gotze. Like 'future ballon d'Or winner' Isco.
Bale will win it next, in my opinion.

When Hazard actually wins 'Premier League player of the year' across the board - then he might enter the equation.

There's a certain commercial side you need to win it now a days I think, play for the right team etc

There are several obvious picks such as Hazard, Neymar & Bale, but I think it will be someone else, who will be in their 30s has a blinder of a season, a bit like Pirlo did a few back.

Wow, time flies.

Bale and neymar must be the closest given their ages although suarez is better than both.

Both still need to improve their all round game imo.

I see that intelligence in all round play more in hazard actually. But he obviously doesn't score as much as the two mentioned above.

Di maria could have a shot if we win the champions league in the next 3 years and ronaldo and messi score less then 50 goals. Same with Neymar and hazard eventually. Can't see anyone else winning it though.

Its hard to win this award without playing for a national side, that at least qualifies for the big tournaments. Thats a huge problem for Bale.
neymar, hazard, Neuer (if he plays a great EC16) are the most likely candidates.
