The New Official Republic of Ireland Football Thread

I don't think it's Doherty and Duffy launching some furious vendetta against O'Shea, but it does seem symptomatic of a problem we've had since the late O'Neill era, that in general the Irish players view internationals as a pain in the hole.

Does he not see O'Shea making us play the exact same way?

I'm annoyed I didn't get tickets for this. Would have been nice to see Ronaldo live for one last time. And hear the Siu! Seen him 3 times and no goals in either games dammit

Is this progress? This doesn’t feel like progress.

I'm not sure I can say anything positive about this Irish side. It's grim beyond belief.
The emergence of Evan Ferguson, our goalkeeping options and centre backs (now bolstered by Jake O'Brien) are the only real plus points. There's also some eye-catching prospects in the youth teams but as ever it's a waiting game with them.

Missed this, watched the highlights. Don't know how the game went overall.

But it seems Bruno was heavily involved is almost every chance Portugal created. 3 goals Portugal scored were all lovely finishes with an element of poor defending involved.

Ireland look like they are a million miles away from even being competitive against the top teams.

It's been that way for about 20 years, hasn't it? We just don't have the players.

There's the bones of a decent side there.
We're sorted for GKs and CBs for many years.

Smallbone and Cullen are decent midfielders playing at a decent level.

Ferguson, Ogbene, Smodic are good players.

There's lots of young talent that we must hope will be playing at a decent level in a couple of years. The likes of Festy, Abankwa, the 3 Albanians.
We've nearly 10 young lads in Italy and Europe right now. Maybe more.
If 3 or 4 of them end up playing at a decent level it'll supplement the current players.

If you follow our underage teams, they've been doing well for years. Nothing spectacular like the Brian Kerr era but still doing well.
Our under 21s drew with England and beat Croatia this week, albeit in friendlies.

He's completely correct.
We need to start being hard to beat and grinding out results and get our seeding up.
Otherwise we'll never qualify for anything again.

Realistically we should be reaching playoffs and qualifying for the Euros every so often.

And yet he's backed O'Shea for the job...... If Kenny hadn't of dropped him because he'd dropped down to League 2 he'd be saying sweet FA. Kenny was well within his rights to drop him once he decided to go down to League 2. Even in our current state League 1 is pushing it

I'm not sure if Kenny was right to drop him or not but I agree with his opinion that we should get back to being hard to beat.

Really we should have 3 systems of play: a low block, defensive hard to beat style for the top sides, a more expansive style for tier 2 teams and then an attacking style for weaker teams.

We need to get back to being 2nd seeds again.
The further our seeding drops, the harder it is to qualify.

I admire Kenny's ambition to play a better style of play but realistically we didn't have the players for it.
There's a reason most of our players are lower PL and Championship.
