The New Official Republic of Ireland Football Thread

One less tricky decision for the manager to make, I guess. Nuts how many young players have had this injury. Used to be something people only got in middle age.

Yes but also lessens the pressure on Kelleher to leave Liverpool unfortunately. Forest were sniffing around him but he's too good to drop down to the Championship if Forest get relegated IMO

In the absence of an outstanding candidate surely the role should go to one of our own, who it will mean the world to, rather than some fourth-rate journeyman taking the job because it's available.

Mark O'Mahony starting up top for Brighton today. Evan who?

Do we reckon anyone at the FAI has thought to pick up the phone and check would Moyes be interested in the gig?

Ha! Was about to post the same thing. Either we listen to the same podcasts or you and the Second Captains came up with the same idea simultaneously.

I’d take him. I think.

Only pods I listen to are the Talk of the Devils and this one with two mental Australians called Neurotic News.

Does make a lot of sense from our point of view though. I’m just not sure would he be interested?

I was listening to them this morning after reading that post. I was sure he'd got it from them but maybe not.

We could do a lot worse than Moyes for Ireland to be fair.

He'd be brilliant for us but he's out of our range in terms of money and status.

In hindsight McKenna would've been great.

Dundalk keeper banned for ten games. Think he's on loan from Nottingham Forest.

Went through the same process with Bohs a few weeks back. Had a tour of the training ground and all. Apparently turned us down because he had a gig in Switzerland lined up. Obviously didn't materialise. Pats have been dreadful this season but should be better, will also have European games so maybe that is what has Kenny reconsidering.

I’d love to see him go abroad and try his luck in Europe. I have a suspicion that he might have a ceiling as a manager but it’d be cool to keep up on how things are going for him in the Swiss league.

I think that is still his goal - to manage abroad. I wouldn't be surprised to see him reject Pats either. He spoke to Dundalk about a return recently too. He's in a tough place. Clearly isn't too keen on a return to the league but also knows the longer he stays out of management, the harder a return to any job is going to be.

The League of Ireland is nuts this season. 16 games in and the most games any team has won is 7.

Been a strange season. Bohs, Pats, Rovers all been really disappointing so far. Dundalk are probably going down. The newcomers Galway and Waterford look nailed on to stay up.

He should just take it and repair his reputation and then maybe look for a job in Europe.

Maybe he doesn't think he can win anything with St Pats though.

Noel King gone from Dundalk on medical grounds

Ainscough had received a considerable amount of criticism on social media for the King appointment - they had a connection going back to his days at Home Farm - and appeared to angrily hit back at one poster responding to today's news.

When one Dundalk fan quoted the announcement and suggested that they should go after the 'real king' - a reference to Kenny - a reply from Ainscough's account said: "Go f*** yourself u s**t head."

The post was quickly deleted.

Good to see Cannon accepting a call up but was hoping McAteer would have been in the squad. That midfield is so weak it's not funny. Collins and Ogbene not available.

Smallbone will be a PL player next season at least.
Also Manning and Bazuna.

All good ages too.

Has Bazuna been good for Ireland?

He looked ropey for Southampton when they were in the PL and his statistics were very bad too.

I randomly encountered his Championship stats earlier and it was the same story but I haven't seen him play for a year now. Someone was talking about Jason Wilcox in another thread, and the style of play that he'd have perhaps had some influence over implementing when they chose to hire Russell Martin. Was just looking through some Southampton stats when I saw it.

Southampton:
xG against 49 (4th best)
Conceded 63 (14th best)

Bazuna personally (41 games):
Post shot xG against 42.1
Conceded 54

He's ranked as the worst in the Championship but then stats can lie.

He was ranked the worst in the PL in the same metrics last season.
