According to The Hollywood Reporter, the police-procedural spoof will be directed by the Lonely Island’s Akiva Schaffer and produced in part by Seth MacFarlane. Dan Gregor and Doug Mand (Chip ’n Dale: Rescue Rangers) wrote the script.

Liam Neeson, Pamela Anderson, Kevin Durand and Paul Walter Hauser star. Due in theatres July 2025.

Remaking the classics rarely ends well, but the film world's been missing movies from the Peter Sellers/Leslie Nielsen school of slapstick comedy for a while now.

Akiva Shaffer has an interesting filmography; most of his movies have been relatively well received but they've also all bombed at the box office. Edit: not all, Chip 'n' Dale was a Disney+ film with a limited release in theatres.

Surely you can’t be serious?

Frank: Yes. Well, when I see 5 weirdos dressed in togas stabbing a guy in the middle of the park in full view of 100 people, I shoot the bastards. That's my policy.

Mayor: That was a Shakespeare in the Park production of Julius Caesar, you moron! You killed 5 actors!

Suspect was described as Caucasian dark hair mustache 6'1

That's an awfully big mustache

I can't help but feel they waited until OJ died before doing this. He must have been getting a piece of the money made off the IP.

With that said, this is a terrible idea.

Alright people, move on, nothing to see here, disperse...

Why can't they just make a new film with same style comedy? Why does it have to be a remake?

Reports are that it's not a remake, it's a reboot/sequel

So it is a new film with the same style of comedy

It'll be wank, but nothing to get upset about.

Agreed, it's not like the original is on a VHS and they are recording the new one over it.

You can still enjoy the original forever.

Don't really get the uproar about remakes/ reboots etc of popular movies in general as no matter how bad they are it won't change my perception of the original(s).

I'd guess a lot of the frustration about many is that it feels very cynical - they're often using the name of the established film franchise (or book series) in order to either benefit from an established audience; help gain more initial media interest about it; or to make deliberate social points with the changes they make in order to modernise them. All of which they'd have to work much harder for with a completely original concept that has no link to an existing fanbase.

As regards this, I can't see it being anywhere near as funny as the wonderful Leslie Nielsen films. But I'll give it a chance.

I do miss this type of comedy, as @Salt Bailly said there's not been anything like this in a long time. I still watch Naked Gun, National Lampoons etc for time to time.

In fact, does anybody have any good recommendations for other films like this?
Police Squad the TV show Naked Gun was based on is a good start.

The film about National Lampoon is pretty good, if you haven't watched that. It's appropriately called A stupid and futile gesture.

It's performative. Nobody really gives a shit. Just a chance to shake a first at a cloud and insert the words 'these days' into the chat.

Spaceballs and Airplane! next.

If Hollywood hadn’t run out of ideas about a decade ago, they surely have now.

Luckily we have some original works like Beverly Hills Cop 4, Twisters, Bad Boys 4, Gladiator 2, and Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, to keep us entertained in the meantime.
