The MMA thread

I actually want to see Conor fight more than anyone. I want to see where he really is. Cowboy was a gimme. Every man and his dog knows Cowboy is just not cut out for top fighters. Would really love to see him fight Ferguson before Ferguson is truly over the hill. Though I’m not sure if Tony will have recovered from the beating he took mentally.

Yeah even Khabib and his team said they wanted Tony, GSP and then out. Guessing Tony has been replaced by Gaethje in that equation.

Can believe in all likelihood we’ll never ever get to see Tony vs Khabib. That would have been absolutely sumptuous.

Is UFC/MMA popularity still on the rise? I kind of lost interest after all the Mcgregor and Jones drama along with the oversaturation of events, after I've been fully invested for a long time (live events, Helwani's show, etc.). What is its situation these days?

What do you mean exactly ? The only mainstream star MMA has is Mcgregor but the sport overall has plenty of hardcore fans who know alot of fighters

I get the oversaturation point. In the 2000's the UFC had only a few title fights for month and they were viewed as special fights. Now, belts have lost value and are viewed mostly as a promotional tool. ''Superfights'' have gained popularity among fighters since the Mcgregor-Mayweather show, and some seek champ-champ status, instead of ruling over a division for extended period of time.

I prefer the Silva's and GSP's of the world, but definitely find this new era interesting and fun to watch in it's own way.

If you would like to get back into mma a little bit, I'd advise you to choose certain fighters that due to style or personality you consider '''must see TV'' and watch only their fights, then you see if you still get '' the itch'' to watch mma.

Nah. On the contrary.

A Khabib in his prime should fight the best, not an 10 years older man, way past his prime.

Well, you can bet GSP would train very hard if he accepted the fight.

Khabib would probably win, but would he completely blow GSP out of the water ? Maybe. Fighters often are on top of the world and feel like ''they still have it'' when they don't and the fall is sudden, hard and fast, but, won't expect it until I see it.

GSP absolutely can make it competitive on paper if in the first two rounds he can find the agression and timing he had a decade ago. He would obviously have less energy, but to give you an example of what I mean, Aldo was pretty competitive with Yan for the first two rounds. The key part here is: Is GSP a slow starter now, or can he start fast ? Against Bisping he started a little bit slow.

I'm all for Khabib vs GSP for his last fight.
If Khabib beats Gaethje, which isn't a given, then I don't think there's anyone in the lightweight division worthy of challenging Khabib for his last hurrah. McGregor? I don't think so. I can't see him beating Khabib at all, and the shitshow it will bring will be ugly. It does beg the question as well that if McGregor does indeed pull off a surprise victory, it would only make sense that a trilogy decider needs to happen which Khabib may not like the look of.

GSP - keeps himself incredibly fit still, and still trains. If he is up for it, then 100% it should be the fight. Because fecking hell, if GSP still is as fit as before, it would be one hell of a fight.

Assuming a fit GSP - he's the only person in MMA with the skills to mitigate Khabib's Sambo onslaught. Plus GSP is a significantly better striker. That said, GSP would probably be 39 or 40 by the time a hypothetical Khabib fight may happen, so if he were to beat a peak Khabib - his legend would be cemented forever.

GSP beats him. He'll be too big for Khabib to maul.
Plus a lot of these grappler fights ends up on the feet due to the respect both men have for their opponents skills.

These lot are right weirdos.

Then their fans go on "Why does everyone go on about Conor???" and the fighters are the ones constantly talking about him! Odd bunch.

Some fighters are piggy backing on McGregor's and Khabib's notorieties. Chimaev looks like a great fighter but he should shut up and focus on being the best in the octagon, he can be a loud mouth when he is promoting a fight though, that will get him money.

True, these guys are just as bad as the Dillon Danis' of the world though, achieved nothing yet when it's Khabib's team people love it.

Conor doesn't want anything to do with this guy. If he were to lose, his career would be finished.

And he's a massively irrelevent fighter to McGregor. If he were to lose to CM Punk his career would be finished to, but he's not going to fight him so it doesn't matter.

Except this guy may actually be able to beat him for all we know. Punk was pure marketing hype, much as Kimbo Slice was.

I'm nitpicking but Chimaev isn't part of Khabib's team, do they have any personal or professional relationship? He is a member of Gustafsson's gym and a bit cocky, Conor just happened to be the biggest name outside of Khabib in his weight classes and he isn't daft enough to target Khabib's yet, he needs guys that aren't wrestling freaks in order to build his reputation and get some money.

Or maybe I missed the link with Khabib?

Both managed by Ali

Different weight classes - Chimaev is at 170 (iirc). If there's any relationship it would be because Chimaev is Chechen, so there are obviously strong ties between Chechen and Dagestani fighters.

I wouldn't call that a professional relationship, isn't Gaethje represented by Ali too? No one would say that Khabib and Gaethje are linked or on the same team.

Yup, for some reason I had him at lightweight/welterweight instead of welterweight/middleweight.

Again, we'll never find out cos he's no where near the level of McGregor or the guys he fights.

McGregor can, and will, take his pick of any of the top fighters and this guy will be no where near that list and rightfully so.

He's using McGregor's name to be relevant, yet most people in this thread go mad when McGregor does anything similar to this.

I suspect we will know soon since he is being fast tracked up very quickly. Dana and the UFC know a star in the making when they see one.

Khabib, Gaethje, Usman are all on different teams but they all have great respect for one and other with Usman and Khabib being especially close. I’d say there is definitely a link between him and Ali when you look how close Ali is to all his fighters.

Him calling out McGregor is just stupid. McGregor won't even entertain the idea and rightly so. He should have called someone in the top 10-15.

Dunno, makes it even weirder he is pretending he flew to Ireland really. Odd guy.

I really doubt we will know, I'd be very surprised if he ever gets close to fighting McGregor, each to their own though.

Yep, beat 2 fighters who were no where near his skillset and now apparently people expect him to fight one of the best LWs in the world and apparently McGregor doesn't want any of it!

It’s Ali’s fighters. Gaethje calls Conor a shit dad and shit person. Usman had a tweet pinned that he’d kill mcgregor if they fought and we all know the Khabib feud. Chimaev just chiming in with the usual. I’m not saying he won’t be someone or something within the sport but if there was a time to post a gif of ‘whoo da fook is that guy?’ It’s now!

Wasn't he coming over to Ireland to spar with McGregor for the Khabib fight and got knocked back at customs for not having the required documents to get in.

Khabib does have some power on his hands though and GSP has been knocked out once

Pretty sure this guy will fight for the 170 belt within 24 months.

May be true but it's easy too early. If he was smart, he's call out Tony Ferguson, give us a weird version of Khabib v Tony as that fights looks dead in the water. Tony is the crazy type that might take the fight too. And if you beat Tony, you've cashed your cheque to the big leagues.

Dan Hardy is the most obnoxious personality in MMA and its a sport that has Schaub as a pundit
