The MMA thread

Gastelum is the next logical one IMO. Obviously the broken hand for Whittaker changes a lot but Weidman is also injured too.

Also Dana revealed at the PC that Gastelum was supposed to be on stand by for last nights title fight but wasn't due to 'personal issues'. Interesting to see what those issues were, possibly weed? Didn't sound too happy at all.

Yeah I heard the presser where Dana was pissed at Gastelum. Doesn't sound like he will get the next big fight based on that.

I enjoyed the hell out of that card last night. Disappointed that prick Covington won but I'm confident Woodley will put him to sleep with a big right hand when they finally meet. Whittaker and Romero delivered again, that was a great fight. Bobby knuckles is quickly becoming one of my favourite fighters.

Also, CM Punk's guillotine attempt has to be one of the funniest things I've seen in MMA. Had me in stitches.

That and how he fixed his hair all the time. Why would you want that hair when fighting? Must have seen in training that it would get in his eyes

God didn't help your weight fatboy! Should have been Rockhold doing this even though I don't like him, let's go Rob.

YES!!! feck Roidmero. Go fight Jones you juicy light heavyweight. WAR ROB what a champion!!!

Juicy slut Romero, can't even make weight you dick!! Honestly see how you get on with Jones or DC because you ain't a middleweight you fat feck.

Lol God ain't make you make weight fat boy. Rob is excellent.
Do you even realize he would have made the weight if the commission had given him his full time to cut the weight?

Yoel was screwed by the commission, by the judges and managed to stay classy as always.

Anyway, was a great fight. Whitaker is a beast too but I really think Romero edged it this time.

Oh and CM Punk...

What a disgrace that he was on the main card.

Dana calling Mike Jackson an idiot for showboating

I think he was trying to cover himself to be honest. He had a point that Jackson was being a dick but his whole "I should of put it on Fight Pass" stuff was laughable...the reality is that fight should of been nowhere near the whole UFC and it makes them as a company look terrible. The immediate aftermath was how out his depth he was and it was embarrassing. Really not a good look, Dana seemed to be protecting himself really.

He did still miss weight at the first instance though. It's not like he was a last minute replacement he's had months to prepare and still missed the weight. It's not a massive deal cos it was a small miss but it was still a miss. He wasn't screwed by the commission he has to take some responsibility for it...especially as it's the second time in 2 fights. I can see why people don't like him, I'm not a massive fan. He has a history of pretty underhanded stuff and does come across a bit of a cnut at times (i.e. getting in Rockhold's face right after a fight.)

Oh and CM Punk...

What a disgrace that he was on the main card.

Showed guts getting in the cage but started way too late. He's been well rewarded financially as well for basically getting smashed, although I can't imagine he needed the money after his wrestling career. Hopefully he's done now.

Just watched that fight. What the hell is CM Punk doing? How can someone train for a few years now yet not have a clue what to do off their back from guard?

Utterly bizarre. Just basics.

Whilst I agree with this sentiment and fair play he did it (I don't have a problem with it really I don't care either way) but I'd imagine most people would do it for the money he got and give it a go. The reality is he had no business being there....again I don't blame him he wanted to do it and did it. Dana should get the blame though, he shit on Jackson but should be looking at himself really for letting that fight happen.

Yeah true. But it's a lot of money for most people, is it for him? I honestly don't know what kind of money wrestlers make but I imagine he doesn't need the cash. Anyway as said, Uncle Dana should be the one we are pointing fingers at here. I would have had no problem with him being put on the prelims.

It just seems a bit of a way out for him with the showing guts, heart etc.

The truth is he wanted to do it, he used his position of fame to get into the UFC and do something he wanted to when he really had no business being there.

Money wise he probably made over $1million for 2 fights, whilst I'm sure he has a lot of money that's still a nice amount for him. Equally I agree the money probably wasn't everything, it was obvious he just wanted to do this and he got to do it so fair fecks to the guy.

Like we've both said it's Dana who sohuld get the blame, imagine Bellator signed some wrestler and did this Dana would be shitting all over it. What's even weirder to me is he doesn't even seem remotely athletic...it's not like a Lesnar where they can move etc. I've never seen the guy wrestle cos he's after my days of watching WWE but he looked like he struggled with basic movement.

I thought that was on of the best cards of the year. Here's my breakdown (missed the first two fights):

Stan vs. Little Pettis
Think this was a decent fight and a fair decision. I do believe that Stan could have done better but seemed to be suffering from ring rust. Cejudo is definitely the right next opponent for MM as he seems to have improved from the first fight and personally, I thought he beat Benavidez in their previous bout.

Anthony Smith vs. Sugar Rashad

Chris De La Rocha vs. Rashad Coulter
The kind of fight you see outside Wetherspoons on a Friday night. Great way to kick off the prelims and I quite enjoyed it. There's a time and place for these fights. Really entertaining.

Ricardo Lamas vs. Paul The Plumber
Think Lamas is now officially a gatekeeper after two losses on the bounce. Bektic always seemed like he has potential and hopefully he can kick on from here and beat a few more ranked opponents.

Claudia Gadelha vs. Carla Esparza
Thought this would be the easiest fight to call on the night but to my surprise, Esparza did great. In fact, I thought she should have won. Gadelha is fit though.

Alistair Ecoreem vs. Curtis Blaydes
Sad to say this as he's one of my favourite fighters but it might be time for The Reem to start thinking about retirement. He's changed his style to a cautionary counter striker recently to avoid taking massive damage but his last two losses have been in devastating fashion. He's a smart guy so hopefully he takes one more fight in Europe against an "easier" opponent and calls it quits.

CM Punk vs. The King Of Pop
Ok, I don't mind seeing Punk again (although shouldn't have been on the main card) because his first fight, he got a rush of blood to the head against Gall, who is clearly leagues above him. But this was against probably the worst fighter in the UFC and he still looked awful. The experiment is over. Done. He looked awful in striking and on the ground, where supposedly has a blue belt in BJJ? Jackson was also a tool for showboating, when he should have been trying to finish the fight. Dana said he's out of the UFC but the better punishment would be to make him fight Lawler or Usman.

Tai Tuivasa vs. Andrei Arlovski
Firstly, why does Arlovski have painted toe nails? Genuine question. Think Tai needed this. To get into murky waters will improve him. Still a whipper-snapper in the division and expect big things in the future.

Holly Holm vs. Peter Crouch
Wow, Anderson is tall but Holm had the perfect gameplan and would enjoy watching her take on Nunes. They need to give Anderson some easier opponents and ease her into the UFC.

RDA vs. Colby Covington
feck sake. Colby with the win. Seems like you can just shout a few insults at Brazilian fighters and they become over emotional and mentally broken. Thought Colby would run out of steam in the championship rounds after his fast start and that seemed to happen in round 4 but he got a second wind in the final round and was the deserved winner.

Gay Jesus vs. Bobby Knuckles
Wow, fight of the year. Makes you wonder what could have happened if Soldier of Dog cut weight properly. In my opinion, I get why Robert won but to me, Romero should have been the winner based on the fact that he never looked in too much trouble and Whittaker survived on instinct at least a couple of times, could have easily been a draw as there should have at least been one 10-8 round. But what heart Whittaker has. Great fight!

Good ready up, agree with most of it. Rashad another one who needs to call it a day as well. Painful to watch.

Re bolded bit, a few fighters have done it (Liddell did I think?) apparently it helps stop the nail from cracking.

Fair play. Makes sense now.

Yes agree. Rashid needs to stop. Or go to a lower organisation, maybe Bellator and fight Rampage.

I think this card did a lot to set various fighters up for their next fights. Holly Holm for example is now the logical next opponent for the 135 belt v Nunes, Covington is now obviously in the pole position for Woodley, and both Blades and Tuivasa raised their stock to move up the HW rankings. It also heraled the end of several fighters. Rashad, who should've retired instead of moving to MW a couple of years ago is now officially done. CM Punk is also finished (as is his opponent according to Dana), and you just have to believe that both Arlovski and Overreem are now where Rashad was a year or two ago - well over the hill and potential knockout fodder for emerging fighters seeking to make their mark.

Woodley having a go at Colby now. Claims he has texts he may leak. Hilarious stuff.

Ariel has got to be loving this. Everyone is revealing everything for him in his last show!!

Some of the texts he was saying sounded funny...believable as well.

Again? He's done this before aswell hasn't he?

Yeah, he was speaking sense to be fair. Basically saying he’s an awful promoter, throws fighters under buses, tells lies to media to suit his agenda etc.

I wonder if they'll keep the show going with a different host or will ESPN create a similar show.

Interesting main event. Could have gone either way. Whittaker more busy but Romero with the more brutal strikes. Lot of heart from Whittaker to stay in it. The last round was definitely a 10-8 to Romero though!

I had it a draw, 1, 2 Whittaker, 3, 5 Romero, 4 even. Or, 3, 4, 5 Romero. Thought he did enough at the end of 4 to steal the round at best, draw it at worst.

Contract expired. He wanted a new one on better terms and Dana said no. Big mistake imo.

The UFC could do with Gegard, Bader, and McDonald right about now.

I only know McDonald out of them, great fighter.

Actually, to clarify....Gegard negotiated with the UFC but Dana didn't want to match what Bellator was offering him (which is weird since UFC is much bigger). I also think Gegard just preferred Coker to Dana.

Have there ever been any cross-promotion showdowns in the past, before the UFC started dominating?

Anderson should thank her lucky stars she didn't fight Cyborg when she was supposed to. If that Anderson showed up against Cyborg it would've ended fairly quickly.

Holly on the other hand, looked amazing and needs to fight Nunes next.

ESPN is making a similar show some of the fighters brought it up. It was a bit odd coz I think the MMA Hour is continuing so they were basically promoting a rival show there. He’s also doing a podcast with Sonnen on ESPN as well.
