The MMA thread

Green is obviously not elite, but the way Islam handled him is just the latest affirmation that he's significantly better than many previously thought, and that he needs to fight for the belt immediately. I think the UFC are finally coming around to the reality that they've wasted enough time slow rolling his ascent and that they may have another potential superstar on their hands.

Potentially a quality fighter on their hands but I doubt they're rubbing their hands thinking they have a superstar on their hands.

They view superstar from a marketing perspective. Islam is an anti-hype machine, but one who will probably end up winning the belt off Oliveira, which won't work out for Dana in the end. He likes his fighters like Conor and Covington.

His best bet is to find someone's McGregor to Islam's Khabib.

Not sure who that is though...

Yeah it depends on how you're defining the word really. There's been loads of great fighters in the UFC who didn't sell very well for whatever reason and weren't big 'superstars'. I don't see him ever being a 'superstar' in the way of a McGregor, Rousey etc. In fact I think even somebody like Khabib's popularity became what it is through McGregor, I don't think he would have been anywhere near as big if not for him.

If we're talking just actual talent and fighting, that's a completely different subject. Right or wrong I don't think Islam has done himself any favours turning down the RDA fight either.

From a fighting style perspective, Islam is not someone I would be excited to watch... but I felt the same about Khabib.

In the end, he will likely win the belt but I feel like I will be more tuning in to watch in the hope that he gets beat, rather than because it will be an entertaining spectacle.

If Charles beats Gaethje and the UFC decided they wanted to make Charles v Conor... I couldn't really blame them even though he's completely undeserving.

He did literally just fight last weekend and might be a weight cut issue that prompted him to not take the fight?

I can easily see Conor clipping Charles (whether accidentally or not) and winning the belt, then us having to deal with several more years of Conor's antics. He will probably want to fight Islam to get back at Khabib (Rocky IV style).

Only difference is this time Rocky will die too.

I don't mind him not taking the fight but the issue was that he called for it on social media. Dana then said he woke up and Islam had turned the fight down but Islam is saying Dana should have stayed up later to get the deal done. Who really knows, it sounds more like terms and then a change of mind rather than a weight issue. I don't mind fighters not taking fights on short notice but the issue for him is that he came out calling for the fight and the fight was apparently agreed and he's the one that seemingly pulled out. Whether that's true or not, let's see.

Ahh didnt know those details.

The only reason I think he's a bit silly is because not only has he called for this fight with RDA but that's the perfect fight for him too. Going against a guy that is a shadow of his former self that he would have probably dominated and beaten and also looked great doing it on short notice. He's missed a big opportunity in what was also a quite low risk fight IMO, no disrespect to RDA.

I wouldn't be surprised if Islam turned down the initial offer expecting he could negotiate for more $... my hunch is that he was willing to fight but likely thought he could get a bump in pay for filling in at short notice.

Very easy for Dana to just move along and have someone else step in. He also might want to teach Islam a bit of a lesson to say that he should have just accepted the offer.

Masvidal will win, i can feel it in my left kneecap.

Hadn't checked before now, looks like a decent card. Is it tomorrow morning, or sunday morning?

He's saying: 'please give me that once in a lifetime purse, I'll literally say anything to get the fight made!'

He may or may not be delusional enough to believe the words, but first and foremost this is the $_$ eyes that UFC fighters have for an astronomical pay day they'll never come close to matching in their own sport.

There are actually muppets cheering Colby on.

They're both cringey, Trump supporters. At least Colby doesn't keep saying it was super necessary to punch and taunt someone who was out cold after a flying knee to the head. Ideally they KO each other at the same time!

Without the threat of a takedown, Usman’s striking is ropey anyway…..he’s the most underwhelming ‘goat’ conversation entrant ever. They need to push Chimaev up sharpish, 170 is such a shitland

Feels odd wanting Masvidal to win a fight but here we are. Or here I am at least. Even though he’s a cnut it feels less put on. Colby’s act is so forced, transparent, and contrived it makes him seem like even more of a bellend. It’s an incredibly lame, tired gimmick. Maybe Jorge’s a better actor

I think it’s easier to say I want Masvidal to win since I really don’t think that will happen

Would like Masvidal to win, but don't think he can KO Colby early on and after that don't think he can keep up with Colby's pace as the fight goes on.

I really wanted to stay up for this one but I'm operating on 3 hours sleep and I want to enjoy it rather than sit there hoping for quick finishes.

Will be watching it first thing tomorrow morning. Can't wait.

When this Russian lad wins here are they going to let him parade the flag round? Won't surprise me as Dana White really has no morals.

UFC will be the last sport to stand up against Russia, the Dagestani guys, Petr Yan about to reclaim the BW title in a co-main next month. Actually, have any of them, Khabib said anything publicly about the war?

Khabib promised his mum he wouldn't get involved.
