The MMA thread

What predictions?

I think Khabib wins in the 2nd. And it will be quite brutal because he will be so focused.
And then khabib will break down in tears and his proper grief recovery period can begin

Yeah I think it's gonna be his easiest title defence so far. 2nd or 3rd round finish sounds about right.

We nailed it.

Seriously, a guy that lost to both Eddie Alvarez and Poirier was never going to beat Khabib.

Tony and Conor II would be my hopeful fights for him if he comes back.

Its more that he gave his mother a promise, for a Muslim that's pretty much unbreakable.
But he can talk to his mother, and she approves of the next fight. It’s not something that is set in stone

I don’t disbelieve Khabib at all. I don’t see him being swayed as you get the impression it’s not the same for him without his father.

Lightweight goat.
This is quite accurate. But did he beat anyone of actual quality, really? There was no one that came close during his reign though but there were no actual challengers either imo with McGregor not even close to his best during their fight. But there are few if any arguments that he was the lightweight goat and absolutely dominant during his time in the UFC.

He’s not near the likes of GSP DC or Jonny Bones for me.

Congratulations to Khabib.

He won't fight again after what he's said...fair play to the guy.

That really was the perfect way to go out. A dominant performance and finish against “the most violent man in the UFC”.

Stood with him without fear, gassed him in a round, took him down, and the finish was absolutely seamless. He is very special.

In a funny way, the whole McGregor story was a blessing in disguised. It thrust him into the spotlight in a massive way and shone a deserved light on his phenomenal abilities.

Agree, seems like a perfect time in a perfectly executed fight and has nothing to prove to anyone.

He also isn't motivated by money, so I would be very surprised if he somehow changes his mind and walks back on what he said. Think this is it.

Very rarely do I believe it when a fighter retires. They nearly always come back...but I think I believe this. Saying he promised his mother makes it hard.

Unless he comes back because his mum tells him to.

I'm in awe of Khabibs career. Hes never really been hurt... its mind boggling in this sport

Mate, he's a fecking prizefighter. If the offer is big enough, he will fight again.
You’ll be very disappointed if you are waiting for him to enter the ring. He is not going to be turned by money. He does not blow his money. He really doesn’t need money to motivate him. He would rather live on the streets than break a promise with his mother. If you think he will, then you don’t know the man.

Now Khabib needs to increase his weight and start fighting Ngannu and other big guys. There is nothing left for him in the lightweight category

I won't at all mate I'm not really bothered either way

I just don't think it's genuine. It's about as genuine as Cejudo's retirement.

You're having a wind up aren't you? He fought Justin, Dustin and Conor, Barboza, RDS... also fought in Russian promotions that are chaotic at best -- guys are tough, rules are loose.

That’s why any suggestion of him as the GOAT has to be taken seriously. GSP was finished by Matt Serra. DC has lost more than once to the same fighter and Jones has failed PED tests and looks significantly worse after those failures. He has also had several razor sharp decisions.

Sure, there are question marks about the quality of his early opponents, but he still fought top level guys and they didn’t even get close. Even massive punchers just panicked and threw widely against him. Like you say, there were no lucky punches or close calls. That indicates a chasm of a gap.

His aura is unmatched and I don’t think anyone else has ever been so scary.

I just don't think it's genuine. It's about as genuine as Cejudo's retirement.

Difference is that Cejudo has spent the last 2 years speaking endless shit. Khabib is a slightly more serious person to say the least.

None of those are considered elite in the UFC bar Conor who wasn’t close to his best when they fought.

I take nothing away from Khabib he’s an absolute beast, he dominated and is an amazing fighter. But if he never comes back he’ll never be the UFC goat for me and he won’t have fought any other true elite UFC fighter. Unless you consider the likes of Barboza and Poirier elite.

There’s a reason I qualified it as lightweight! Incredible within the weight class though. I still have GSP as the goat, and it will remain that way even if they fight and Khabib loses, as it would come with the massive caveat of GSP being out of the game for so long

Like when Lady Cathy convinced SAF not to retire

@Shane88 those chops definitely hurt Khabib but I always felt that if his balance was compromised, he'd be able to shoot for a take down.

One of the first take downs he which ended up in a triangle choke.. Just the prowess of Khabib is unmatched.

Utter nonsense . Embarrassing post

He seems to have a pretty frugal lifestyle anyway

Cejudo is a clown. He wants to be a clown. Comparing him to Khabib is so wide of the mark. However, I think there is one super fight left in Khabib. GSP or McGregor.

Depends if Conor eats shit against Dustin and Justin..

Otherwise Khabib is done.

If you think it’s nonsense that means it’s a good post, thanks.
Respectively I think your post was wrong. Khabib beats mcgregor on any day.

I have watched MMA a long time and I think he is the 1st I consider almost unbeatable. I say almost because in combat sports even the very best can be caught.

I think Khabib want's 30-0

McGregor will goad him into a rematch if/when he beats Dustin.

Where in my post do you read that Khabib doesn’t beat McGregor again?

The only way Khabib can be beat is if he deviates from his game plan and loses his head in the cage. Otherwise, he's infallible. There's absolutely nothing to suggest in the 29 fights that he had, that he has any chinks in his armour. None.

I think that's questionable TBH. I think McGregor was nowhere near his best in the first fight and was the only fighter prior to tonight to take a round off him. Peak McGregor v peak Khabib is a very interesting proposition.

Who does he need to fight still in your opinion?

I'm generally deeply suspicious of the emphasis that has often been placed on Khabib's background. That "people from where he's from are a different breed" type stuff that underplays the fact that he's a great fighter because of his talent, dedication and skillset, not because of where he was born. Or indeed it being used to excuse less admirable actions on his part, as if he has to behave in a certain way because of where he's from. Particularly when it's coming from people who aren't from that background in the first place.

However, I'm perfectly happy to accept that the posters claiming that a Muslim's promise to his mother is "unbreakable" and that those of us doubting his retirement don't understand his culture are correct. It isn't the way the fight game typically works, but maybe Khabib really is different. I certainly don't know enough to claim otherwise.

And if it turns out that Khabib does fight again, I'm sure those posters will be quick to admit they were wrong, that they don't understand Khabib's background and the influence it has on him as much as they thought they did and that their insistence that Khabib was so different to other fighters was rather sanctimonious. ;)

McG is just some bloke he had fun with and choked. A blur is the hundreds of men whom he has defeated.

There is nothing McG can now say or do to challenge Khabibs GOAT status and so nothing he can say they will even get on his radar anymore. It’s done.

Once again, there is no match for him in the lightweight category, and it makes sense to retire simply because he has no competition. But what he might do Instead is increase his weight and move up by a few categories. There, they have a few strong guys

Yeah I think McGregor fight will happen providing Conor beats Dustin. Dustin is a different animal than he was at 145. Also Gaethje has real bad blood with Conor. Itnink the fight is 3/4 years away.
