Television The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power

Now I know where those who barely made classes ended up. They're writing for Amazon.

All it took was one elf to show up for the Numenorians to turn into right wing fascists

very implausible scenes imo…

I just can’t connect with the very polished, colorful and clean look of everyone and everything…aside from many other flaws, it feels very much like customized layman actors trying to play generic prototype characters. Every reaction seems very predictable and no situation feels real. Mr. Pompadour

I‘m fine with the orcs, though. They are well made imo.

Lots of you say "stop crying about Tolkien and enjoy in show". But you don't understand an issue here. If you love something then you don't like to see how it is ruined, right?
Imagine PL games with cheerleaders, singers, commercial time-outs and shit. And then that someone who gives a feck about PL says to you; "Hey, just enjoy in football or don't watch it. Stop moaning".

Not a fan of this. 4 episodes seems like enough of a chance to give it, but it's just not good.

Bad acting, worse writing, even the makeup and outfits feel like pantomime.

Great CGI though fairplay. And the dwarves are done quite well I think.

Is the show going to ignore that Galadriel is a powerful sorceress that can give Sauron a lot to worry about on her own?

Or that Numenorians are supposed to be an elite race of men and warriors? That prison escape scene was laughable.

I’ve thought it’s been fine up until now but episode 4 was not good. Everything moves so fast and it’s very jarring.

The dwarf and Elrond are talking and then suddenly there’s a cave in, but the scene cuts away so there’s no drama. Next we see his wife singing, not a clue what’s going on, she says she’s singing for the lives of the miners, we think the dwarf is dead, nope he’s back like 5 seconds later. He confirms the miners are all fine. Like there’s zero jeopardy there and nothing that happens is ever given a chance to breathe.

The acting is pretty sub par as well and some of the scenes just don’t make much sense. Things seem to be done in order for them to look grand and visually appealing but they lack substance.

Btw what the feck was that shit with Isildur's sister? Did the hire Sarah Jessica Parker to write her scenes?

   She just shooed them into the cell and they went in in an orderly fashion.

I was thinking 'they derk our jobs!".
Derka derk!

i think that's a good summary. watching it, i don't care who lives or dies. none of the characters compel you. of them all, the dwarf and the elf are the two best but it's just not enough. they've really fecked this one up.

This is really hard going, all the money they have spent on this and yet it's so difficult to watch.

The acting is like a primary school pantomime, the dialogue is just so bad it melts your brain at times listening to the be absolute nonsense characters are saying.

I can only assume the script has been translated from multiple languages into English and it's why none of it rings true.

Wheel of Time wasn't great but it's so much better than this.

I have no idea where the story is going if it's going anywhere which im starting to doubt. The nonsense with isildur this episode was there any point at all?

Also fecking quit with the slow motion for no reason at all and people just staring into space for no reason

I hope they haven't started filming season 2 yet as they have a lot to fix or yes it will get pulled.

Classic Amazon, so much money yet so little substance.

They should've just continued with The Expanse. Cnuts.

It isn't being ruined though. Whatever Tolkien you like is still there, completely unaffected by this TV show. If you pick up a Tolkien book, the words aren't now any different than they were before.

It's more like if the PL stayed exactly as you like it forever but someone started another entirely separate league modelled on the PL but with added commercials, cheerleaders, singers, etc. And instead of just not watching this new league you instead decided to actively seek it out just so you could waste hours of your own life on something you don't like. Even as the PL is still right there, completely unchanged and waiting for you to go back to it whenever you want.

Well it's not since the one elf mentioned by Tolkien to have darker skin, the other elves thought he was a half orc.

And it looks like this very elf, Maeglin, is very likely to be Adar, despite supposedly dying in the first age.
I'm actually begining to enjoy this show.

I'm pretty sure that
He's The Witch King

I still think he's quite obviously
Sauron.

Think ill be staying far far away from this then.

I'm really enjoying it. It's like a warm hug getting back into Middle Earth and it looks incredible.

Understand and accept that it should be much better with all the money behind it, and that it could improve a lot on following the lore... But i'm having plenty fun just being back in middle earth again.

Think lord of the rings were some og my main introductions to fantasy, along with Krull & Willow. Feels good to just have that nostalgia bone tickled.

Yep. Been an ok watch so far but entering that world again has been relatively fun.

I like it too. It's not gonna go down as an all time classic at this point, but I'm looking forward to watching the next episode. I realize it's a completely different show, but it wasn't really until halfway through season 1 (six episodes or so) Bojack Horseman found its way.

The production values around presentation against the writing is like having xavi, iniesta and busquets behind Ian Dowie, Francis Jeffers and Jason Lee.

Just incredible how badly the writing is letting this down. If you put The Witcher quality presentation with this writing it gets almost universally savaged I think.

A child could write a better show than whatever hacks are churning this shite out. They've turned Galadriel from one of the wisest & most powerful beings in Middle Earth into an imbecile & a detestable stroppy fecking mare. And the Númenóreans, a race of giant Viking-like warriors whose power in battle was so potent Sauron was wary of going to war against them depicted as a bunch of squabbling idiots.

"The sea is always right!", "a rock sinks because it looks downwards into darkess"

This is braindead horseshit, so much so it's almost beyond parody.

Name one time the sea has been wrong.

I agree to be honest. Ive tried to love it but the cast is absolutely woeful. I dislike all of them from the Queen regent, sailor brother and sister, the weird moody teenager kid whose the love child of the elf, who coincidentally is the only character I don't mind (and the other elf to be honest) even though their roles are properly hammy. Galadriel is really dislikeable, as is her mate, who she inexplicably and blindly believes is the long lost King or some bollocks, event though he has absolutely no obvious merit to prove this, other than some necklace he probably robbed off someone during a battle.

I was watching that latest episode thinking who gives a feck about this new army being sent over. The show feels so boring. I was really glad Norrie and her mates weren't in that episode aswell as they are the worst part about it for me.

Episode 4 was poor

The sentimental orc was odd - doesn't fit at all, especially when the elf caresses it. Calling him father is also odd.

The prison escape was really bad.

I think the thing they have got the most wrong, though, is focusing on commoners - Lord of the rings (including the Silmarillion) has never really been about that - the hobbits were really an exception. 99% of the characters are kings, queens, princes etc. They are people with huge power that operate on a high level (national incidents). This has gone too low in level, particularly in this episode.

This show is so light, I'm forced to root for our lord savior Sauron to burn all races alive. Goblins & orcs are always spot on. Great work with the characterisation back from Peter Jackson's era to present.

4th episode and something is finally happening.

After a decent if unspectacular start that was a major nose dive. It's like for one episode they let some kids write. 2/10 stuff after a bunch of 6s and 7s. Honestly reminded me more of Shannara Chronicles than the first 3 episodes.
Hopefully its just a blip.

I think the issue is with the source material. Outside of The Lord of the Rings, it's not exactly exciting stuff. Having said that I've enjoyed the series and it's probably going to get more interesting. And Adar is clearly Sauron.
