Gaming The Legend of Zelda | Earthquake: "It's actually ridiculously good, and keeps getting better." ★★★★★

Looking forward to BOTW 2 but really hope they get a normal weapon system again. And normal dungeons. The shrines are cool and all but you need the big elaborate dungeons. And more enemy diversity, was way too standard throughout.

For the weapons though, one of the best parts of Zelda was finding a new weapon, like the boomerang early on, or getting the bow eventually, or finally a better sword. Items breaking was dumb.

It's funny and really speaks testament to how well made BotW was from the scenery, to the music, to every little movement and sound, that I strongly disliked the weapon system, the lack of variety or challenge in enemies, the lack of dungeons and yet I still absolutely loved it and thought it was fantastic. Those are some pretty big cons so they really perfected the rest of it  Could be so much better though. Not a single memorable part of the game involved fighting or getting a weapon. The Master Sword Trials probably the best fighting related bit.

Great to see skyward sword remake though. Never played it because never bought the Wii U or the extension on a normal Wii remote to make it doable.

I wouldn't consider myself overly creative, nor do I have the patience for games these games that tend to not guide you towards your objective or don't at least somewhat "hand hold" you, but I loved BOTW. There's something about it that sets it apart from other exploration games that made it fun for me to wander around trying to find shit. The world just has so much in it in every nook and cranny that I didn't mind figuring out where the hell to go without a quest marker or whatnot. It's just an incredible world that they've built and the physics system is insane. There were so many times I went "maybe I could try this even though.. nah, there's no way they designed that into the game, oh shit it worked!" . It's easily one of the greatest games ever made, despite having no real semblance of a plot.

That said, I couldn't find all the shrines by myself and did have to google a few of 'em or I would've been playing the damn thing hundreds of hours more!

I'll try again with it then.

To me, yes, the weapon durability is a massive annoyance and excessively harsh even for that kind of system. I can't stand Assassin's Creed games.

It's not helped that every time I pick up my switch I remember how God awful those Joycons are to use.

Does any Nintendo game ever? The switch came out like 4 years ago and last year the thing was almost impossible to buy ffs.
That’s one thing I hate about Nintendo, AAA games never go on sale. At least on the PlayStation store (don’t know about Xbox but I’m assuming it’s the same) around spring when they do those massive sales you can get games like the latest edition of 2k and Fifa for like £5 each. Fifa 18 on the nintendo eshop is still its RRP :/

Edit: omission of a word

That depends on what you expect from a sale. It's currently -30 % on the eShop (according to Dekudeals).

BOTW has gone from £59.99 to £41.99 on the eshop. I mean, it’s a sale buuuttttt

Items breaking was a good idea, the problem is that the game balance was off. They just broke a bit too quick. It made it hard to get to know weapons since they didn't stick around and it also made finding them less of a treat. But in a game that wide ranging it would be boring to have only a handful of weapons and I liked the way it made you try out every different weapon, sometimes in the same battle. Personally, Id like them to keep it but just make them stick around for a bit longer, or at the very least have a forging system to let you repair weapons.

Disagree with the bit about the fighting though, BOTW's combat system has proven to be one of the best in any recent game. This video gives a nice flavour of what's possible.

It's just par for the course with Nintendo.

The games always hold value and some older Gamecube and 64 games are now worth hundreds.

The good thing is if you trade in you always get a good amount for your Nintendo titles.

Oh don't get me wrong, the combat is good, it's just there was a huge lack of variation in enemies and there was a big lack of challenge in them unless it was a lynel. The game was too easy IMO (though I know I can just do master mode). Mainly the mini dungeons. They were more annoying than clever, the bosses were very simple.

It probably did a bad job of filling the zelda bingo card in terms of dungeons and giving a constant stream of upgrades and new weapons. It just threw everything at you straight off the bat.
I quite liked the weapon degradation thing but i would have set every weapon to a similar level as the kings equipment, which broke after a couple of fights, rather than the early weapons breaking after 5 swings, which was too much. I get people missing dungeons too just to swap up the environment. Theres no obvious reason to do it but i found wandering around hyrule castle quite fun just because it was indoors. The one size fits all shrines feel a bit removed from the rest of the game and aren't a great substitute.
It was an outstanding game but there is room for improvement all the same.

Yeah. The weapon thing is a nostalgia thing for me. Ocarina of time, majoras mask, wind waker, twilight princess... whenever you get the next weapon in a dungeon it's a huge and exciting moment. They all offer their big advantages and uses. BotW I literally never used the boomerang, no hook shot, pretty much just used whatever sword was available (or bow) until I got the master sword and then did the master sword trials. The Master Sword is the only memorable weapon in the game, which was the disappointing bit.

Controversial opinion but would anyone else not be disappointed if they ditched the shrines and replaced them with dungeons in the sequel?

Some were great but found them really repetitive, especially the combat ones.

I never did get the whole no dungeons fixup for BOTW, the whole process of getting to the bosses is basically the dungeon. Just because it's not in a literal dungeon doesn't change the fact that the actual gameplay is still similar. You go to a location and solve puzzles to get to the boss and fight it. Switch location for dungeon and there's basically no difference.

I largely liked the shrines but I was a bit disappointed they had several of the same combat shrines. They could've just included one of each level and be done with it.

Might be a bit naughty saying it on here, but we all own Zelda anyway (I have 2 copies so screw it) so morally I'll let us all off...

But this thread made me try the emulator again for the first time in forever, and my word is it much improved. 60fps @ 1440, plus I've boosted the draw distances, AA and shading. Also for those of you who hate it, you can of course adjust (or turn off) the weapon degrade. I've set mine to 3x durability, but throwing and fire is still unaffected. That's way more balanced.

You're right but what they do now is a bit different, I think. Something like artificial inflation.

The rare 'Cube/N64 games were usually printed in low stock and then not reprinted meaning they didn't have a chance to go down in price. Games like Conker's Bad Fur Day, Pokemon Stadium, Skies of Arcadia, Killer 7, etc. All cost a bomb then and still now.

The main nintendo series though like Mario/Zelda were often dead cheap in the generations prior to the Wii U - due partly to appearing as Player Select titles (or whatever it was called). Ocarina of Time was famously £10 in Woolworths one Christmas.

They definitely have created an artificial inflation, but thankfully in the instances you trade in a Nintendo game (Wii U onwards) they generally give you a decent chunk of change.

When I got my Switch years a go, I traded my Wii U version of Mario Kart 8 to get the Switch version. I think I had to contribute about a fiver, with the old game. Even now Wii U games that were rereleased on Switch are worth almost as much as they were when they were originally released.

Mario 3D All Stars is my retirement plan, seeing as that was a genuine limit run.

I enjoyed the shrines, but could do without the ones that used motion controls. They were next to impossible to do in handheld, while still trying to look at the screen normally. You'd look a right twat trying to play those on the go, on a train or bus for example! It was annoying having to get out your pro controller just to complete one shrine.

If they got rid of them and replaced them with fewer, larger dungeons, it'd make the fast travel system less convenient too, as they are quite well distributed.

Never got the complaint about lack of dungeons. The Divine Beasts are the traditional dungeon type levels.

I think what people tend to miss is the unlocks at the end of the dungeon that allow you access to other areas.

They were just a bit short i think

But you have to put that in context. Yes they were shorter than a traditional dungeon, but they're not insulting short. They've also added the shrines which are essentially, mini dungeons.

The complaint just doesn't hold up IMO, because the game actually gives you more of the dungeony things to do than a traditional Zelda title.

Yeah I liked them too. I think it's just a case of 'ooo this isn't like every other Zelda game I've played' and then you realise why we can't have nice things :(

I also think the process of accessing the divine beasts can be considered as part of the traditional dungeon. They were some of my favourite moments of the game

I enjoyed them for what they were, they felt like extended boss fights to me. And you did actually get new powers on completing them. But i can understand missing digging into a 2 hourish underground lava dungeon or the like. I get why they were cut, it'd just be nice to see something like that in the sequel. From the trailer it looks like they'll be reusing parts of Hyrule. Hopefully they'll build on whats there and give a few discrete, seperate environments to mess around in. That'd be my hope.

They did have that underground thing Link took on with a flamethrower or something. That at least suggested there might be underground sections.

Personally i feel a much better way to scrap the formula is to remove ganon rather than dungeons. Nintendo are so averse to writing new stories. Perhaps make a game where you are Zelda instead of Link.

Look at TLOU2 thread in here and that might give a small glimpse into what would happen if Nintendo did that.

I still call Link Zelda all the time anyway, and I've been playing the Legend of Link for 30 years.

They could do it. There's plenty of games where he isn't the final boss.

Legend of Zelda II - Dark Link
Link's Awakening: Dethl
Majora's Mask: Majora
Oracle of Seasons: Onox
Oracle of Ages: Veran
Minish Cap: Vaati
Phantom Hour Glass: Bellum
Spirit Track: Malladus

Well I believe only Majorask mask and Skyward sword has been the triple A titles. Imo Zelda isn't like Mario, they don't have rehash Ganon all the time.

I saw most of the hate directed towards "TLOU2" down to
Joel head being treated like a golf ball and Abby being well Abby.

I think they printed more than people realise.

It's easily available in stores in singapore

Yeah, it's on the shelves in my local Sainsbury's too!

Anyway, I'm still playing BOTW. Just got my 820th Korok seed. I know I'm going to end up two short of the 900 and not be able to figure out where they are.

So, I've done all the BOTW shrines, and am now stuck on 898 korok seeds. Christ knows where the other 2 are!

Also doing the The Master Sword Trials. Jesus, that final trial is hard. Most of the first 10 levels are easy enough - so long as you don't get struck by lightening, but sometimes it just doesn't work out. The same tactic can sometimes still end up with you getting attacked and losing a load of hearts. Having to start from the beginning and do 20-odd levels all in one is too much for me.

Well, I did it. Completed every shrine, every trial, every side quest, found every korok seed, beat Ganon and upgraded all my armour to the max. Question is what will I do with my life from now until BOTW 2?
