Gaming The Last of Us Part II (PS4)

Don’t know whether to get. Can’t be arsed investing my spare time into a game with a seemingly disappointing story.

Is it open world by the way?

So far I love the story! Not open world, fairly linear, but can explore in this world.

Thought it would be, glad it is because the story was everything in the first one.
Will consider it but seen a fair few mixed reviews.

Someone asked if you can get the infected to fight human enemies and yes you can.

vid of it:

I can just waltz through while that guy gets chased by three

One of them also ran right into my arms whilst running away for an easy silent kill. Very satisfying.

That was me, thanks. That's gonna be my plan when I play it tomorrow

You could explore the world in the first. I really enjoyed looking inside peoples houses and reading notes etc. It was really well done despite being very linear.

I like getting some extra story by reading the notes but damn does everyone who’s dying immediately pull out the paper and pen they have on hand and write their thoughts?

I can't beat that infected bloater boss you fight when you're Abby. Use up all my ammo and can't kill it. Died around 15 times now. Can't kill it on lowest difficulty either.

The blood spatter on the wall when you shoot someone up against it is very well done. They’re right about there being a real weight to killings. It feels very real.

Ah feck they killed Joel, the bastards. I knew he would die given the game is about revenge and all but that was brutal. it's also why I never wanted a sequel, because I knew they'd kill him

Its brilliant when you get kill someone and the other guy goes over and says oh they killed john. Very real like. Then I butcher them

Yeah I had one guy shouting “Shannon get them from the left” and then I smashed her face in and heard the guy scream her name all anguished.

stuck on this part as well wish there was a skip mission button

I'm only about 90 minutes in and I need to sleep, but it's looking good so far.

The new characters seem pretty decent, Abby seems like she's going to be fun to play as more since she just punches everything in her way. I'm also glad that they showed a little bit when Joel and Ellie were younger, I never like sudden time speed ups in games without any story development. Maybe it's just me though but it doesn't look as "wow" as I thought it was going be on Pro.

I managed to kill it with my very last shot in my gun on very light difficulty after being murdered about 30 times at least.

In part 1 you needed fire (i.e. molotovs) to kill bloater (mini)bosses. Unless they’ve changed that in 2, that’s still your best bet.

This is a proper boss. Used up my flamethrower and several bombs without it being enough. Would recommend anyone to start saving up ammo when they get the flamethrower, because it becomes in need in this fight around 40 mins later.

That sounds really cool, don't think I've seen that in many other games but would certainly add weight to the kills.

Well I finished it. All in a all this is a very good game, but I do feel that the story and characters are weak compared to the first. Joel was killed way too quickly and tbh I wasnt interested in Abby as a character or her story arch. Graphics, presentation, gameplay all very good. Someone came up with this plotline alternative instead which I honestly thought would be better too.

Still the game ticks so many good boxes that I will give it a 8.5/10, the pacing, the abby storyline and overall plot weaknessness and writing prevents it from being a full 10.

Just downloaded the game now.

I’m going to try my hardest to wait until Tuesday to play though as it’s my day off so I’m going to hammer it all day.

The game-play is significantly improved, but the story is not as engaging. Still a very good and polished experience, but more easily forgotten.

About 3 hours in and I’m annoyed with the direction this game took by:

Killing Joel off. The reason the first game was so successful was because of the chemistry between Joel and Ellie. Too many games/movies think that they need to kill main characters off.

I don’t think this will be as good as the first one. It will still be a great game though.

This is tempting, though I've never played the first one.
It does briefly recap right at the start but you obviously don’t get the emotion of the first.

Why not get the remaster, and see if you like the story?

Me too. They could have taken a completely different direction with the story and have him killed of later if he needed to go sooner or later.

A lot of the first game's emotional clout came from Joel's daughter dying early, which gave the relationship with Ellie more resonance.

I can't think of a better way to give Ellie's journey some meaning than killing Joel. The way he died was excessively harsh though.

well we all knew Joel did a lot of bad things before he met Ellie, hell even when he did meet her he did a lot of bad things too. His death was horrible but it sounds like he's done just as bad to others.

I'm sad he's dead but you can't say he didn't have it coming, either. Plus in a sequel about revenge he was always going to die!
