The Horror

Pyscho created the slasher sub-genre of horror, can't see how it's not. It's an interesting point about The Thing and Alien though, they're both about a shapeshifting alien that goes around murdering most of the investigative crew...yet Alien's generally defined as Sci-fi and The Thing as Horror, when you could argue the opposite for either.

I always though Psycho has a psychological thriller to be honest , never a horror.
Alien and the Thing for me are pure Sci-Fi , but I can see a case for inclusion in Horror films selection , substitute the deranged alien in both films for a deranged human and you have pure horror.
But a horror film for me is something that sets out to scare you or at lest try , and out of those 3 only The Thing did scare me , so maybe The Thing is horror , sometimes there is a fine line between Sci-Fi and Horror.

Well movies can cross genres...Alien certainly does, it's definitely a horror and sci fi.

Why does the human element turn it into a horror? For me, that'd probably take some of it away...but then that's just me, and what evokes the feeling of horror for people is hugely subjective, fears are very personal. That's why it's somewhat in the same boat as the comedy genere in that it has to find a way to appeal to a wide group of people based around evoking a singular emotion, and at the same time be current. It's hard to find something that was funny decades ago just like it's hard to find something that was scary decades ago. In this case it's all about fear of the unknown, if we're already well versed on the subject it's going to lose a lot of its scare-quality. It won't take away any of the suspense but it takes on a different form, it's suspense fuelled by intrigue rather than suspense fuelled by fear. That's were the psychological thriller aspect comes into it, or the Sci-Fi aspect, it's just making it multi-layered so that it can appeal to a wider range of audience over a longer period of time, I guess. That said, horror movies (or literature) from their very beginnings have contained supernatural, other-worldly elements to them seen most obviously in the many reincarnations Dracula.

I thought this was a decent enough piece on horror movies and what they should be defined as. There's been very few decent horror movies since it was reinvented with Scream, but it'll be reinvented again. The genre's just lacking some originality at the moment.

I think some of the early Halloween films are the best horror films. I've seen most of the others that have been mentioned but I've not know many horror films to be as gripping or suspenseful as Halloween.

The only movie that I've seen since that has brought back some of these feelings was 'When a Stranger Calls'. That's a brilliant film and I'd recommend it if you've not seen it.

That's a good article, Brwned. It's a little depressing when established authors try to avoid the 'Horror writer' label, but then, that's nothing new (not a few famous Sci-Fi & Historical Fiction authors do much the same thing). Publishers and the public need to be more discerning as regards what they publish & what they choose to read and watch for there to be an improvement in the Horror genre.

If you're after a gross out, SAW type of horror, 'The Collector' is a decent shout.

Very mainstream but I watch "The Road" the other day and found it quite harrowing, I suppose it's more thriller than horror but it had lots of cannibals! I find realistic horror movies the most scary, when aliens and demons make an appearance then I lose interest.

Have you seen this?

Anything with Caruso in it is horrifying.

 The Caruso gif from Session 9 is a classic. :D
Although he was excellent in King of New York, I reckon.

fecking hell I have seen the Dawn of The Dead remake in a few top tens. I give up.

The Australian film Lake Mungo is excellent, IMO.

Has anyone else here seen this film? It absolutely haunted me for weeks afterwards, and I'd really welcome someone else's opinion. I feel that it's so much more than just another mockumentary. I can provide a link to watch the film online if necessary.

Alien first for me, I watched it far too young and it stuck with me.

The movie's low-budget, chief. Some people seem to think it's great; others consider it rubbish. So don't feel wary of slating it just because I happen to think it's good. :)

I am watching 'Kill the Irishman' at the minute. I will throw it on next.

Just finished, random thoughts. It was OK. Heavily influenced by modern Japanese horror, IMO. Films like The Grudge, The Ring, Dark Water, etc.

The first half was kind of like an episode of "World's Most Haunted Houses." The interviews, the photos, the camera footage. It definitely picked up as the film progressed.

The fact that they could pick images out of stills, that clearly weren't there from a distance, was a little insulting, but as you said earlier, the budget was non existant.

Clever ending. You will also be pleased to know that a yank version is due out soon.

Good points, mate, and thanks very much for taking the time to watch it. :)
I did wonder if one of the film's minor themes was, in fact, the 'art' (as in 'trickery'/manipulation) of film/filming.

It very well could have been. I have had a few, so I have to admit that part of the time I was reminiscing of when I lived in Aus.

Some lovely shots of Victoria.

I downloaded your recommendation Steve. I shall watch it on the train tomorrow morning

It only has a 6.1 on IMDB

Gulp. I watched a Horror film with a 6.1 rating earlier, mate (titled 'Grave Encounters') - it was dreadful. I hope this isn't an omen... :D

I watched that a couple of weeks ago. Absolute garbage.
