The genius of Marcus Rashford

30 goals and 11 assists last season. Playing left winger.

Really feel now, how carried away many of us were last season when we almost started to take his numbers for granted - thinking this is the season we all have been waiting for, to see Marcus explode finally, take that last step and close the gap to the best offensive players playing the same position, like Vini JR, Salah, Mbappe, Rodrygo, Saka, Rafael Leon etc etc but instead he has taken 3-4 steps back. Not scoring, not assisting, presses with 50% of his energy, doesnt help his fullback, no attitude or energy when his playing, looks more confused and likes he is forced to be on the pitch.

Weird how everything started so good with him and ETH - Erik spoke about Rashford often his first 9-10 months, even when we started off bad, didnt score a lot and our offense was terrible in general. But this season, he is barley mentioning him, if it is not some kind of problem unfortunately. Many will say its because there is not much positive to say about him at the moment (a long moment) but thats my point exactly - last year, before the season started even, we had just started to train again after the short summer break but ETH was already out and telling the media how great Rashford is, that he needs to rest and build up his physics a bit but that he is sure that he is the main man to build this team around- Even when being asked what he basis all this big believe in Rashford on - he had barley any answers more then that he has seen him play and that everybody "knows that he is one of the best".

And because he had been managed wrongly and used in the wrong way, ETH saw a Mbappe Light in him - thats how much he was convinced about that if we just give Marcus some time to get used to our new way of playing and other guys as well, he will explode - and which he did, for about 2, max 3 months directly after the WC (where also had some moment, scoring 3 goals) he was really unstoppable, everything he touched resulted in a chance for us, if not a goal or assist. But as fast as it came from nowhere, but it went back even faster to maybe somewhere and the man is stock there (at leas in his mind) and cant seem to find a streak out of 2 good games.

But the point was that ETH did not hype Marcus at all this last preseason, was not openly defending him when media again started to criticizes Marcus (and others) for not scoring in the first games of the season and he is not being the same backup either now when things seem to be worse then ever for him, both on but also off the pitch, the message he left on his social media earlier today is showing that he is not well, probably mentally but refuses to take a break for a couple of months if needed, try to sort out some things (he has been through a lot his last 7-8 years since he started to play for the first team) while there still is time - just remember Lingard and how broken and upset he was that he didnt seek help earlier so he could get help, pull it through and enjoyed the best days of his life probably playing for your boyhood team.

If Marcus, which I believe, is depressed, and stressed out and feel that the role model he became during the COVID-19 is to big of a suit for him to fulfill at the moment, then maybe we need to help him take break and 2-3 steps away from the spotlights, also removing all social media might be a good idea to rest your mind and recover your body and come back for at least one last season (24/25) and lets see if you can use 100% of your talent and potential and try to beat the last big "all smile and happy faces" press conference with both Erik and Marcus having a good time was when Ten Hag, I believe. challenged Marcus to score 40 goals this season (23/24) and that he was sure he had it in him - that he had still some work to do to be the best version of himself. Many of us believed in the 30-40 goals, we believed that Marcus was happy and that Erik saw something about him. But this season, i barely see Marcus, or Erik, smiley at all, not together or with anyone else - and Erik does not sound convinced anymore - now are we cheering for Rasmus to be better then Haaland, just give 2-3 more games and we are there, at least one thread here to solve it.

Ive read this a second time and Im actually more pissed of than I was the first time. Ignoring the weak insinuation early on, the rest of it is absolute narcicissm. Let him go around the entire pro game and see how unique his mighty struggle is. It's all admirable, sure, but the bottom line is people are rightfully criticising him for a string of absolutely abysmal, lazy performances that contradict every single word of this piss.

They day he signed with that new PR team was the start of a lot of problems.

Try harder. That's literally all anybody is asking. The basics. Spare the essay

I am a horrible optimist, I know, not good for this world. Let's see if this kicks him on, obviously we all are rooting for him to come good.

There’s something weird going on with him. You can see he just cannot be arsed. Even in that good run of form he had last year he didn’t look happy, doing that celebration where he pointed to his head.
I dunno, it all just feels really weird with him

Less is sometimes more friend

This is another problem with ten Hag's use of the squad. He obviously needs some time out - whether for his mental health or just due to his poor showings - which would benefit us, too, but it won't happen because he just won't rotate.

At least when Ole was running him into the ground he was in the form of his life.
Ten Hag gave Sancho plenty of time off and it only made things worse, arguably. I remember Fergie used to say some players need to play to get their form. Rashford seems to be one of them. If you look at his purple patches, they came from him playing until he found his form.

128 goals for the club by age 26, which is good for twelfth all-time in club history. If he sticks around he will easily wind up top 5. Not bad, considering all the hate he gets.

All while being part of some of the abjectly worst teams in the clubs recent history, and while he himself has put in numerous truly terrible and wholly uninspired performances.

No one will disagree that when he's on song, he's a world class talent. The problem is that the number of bad performance have started to surpass the good ones and when Rashford is playing poorly, he is beyond dire, offering nothing of value whatsoever to the team on the pitch.

The man looks like he'd rather be anywhere else than on the pitch at the moment, and the lack of effort is shocking and frankly embarrassing.

I am a horrible optimist, I know, not good for this world. Let's see if this kicks him on, obviously we all are rooting for him to come good.

same, and whilst it’s difficult and my patience is certainly being tested, I personally haven’t written him off yet.

What is the point in this for Rashford? What does it do for him to improve his form?

He seems very insecure with respect to his image.
Any bad article by anyone, even irrelevant outlets, and his team go into overdrive.

Don't think this helps him at all. I don't think he understands why a lot of people are upset with him. We understand his background, and nothing would make United fans happier than having him succeed. He comes across as lacking in self awareness.

He says don't question my commitment or love for the club, yet when we got spanked by City he went out and partied after the game, and at a time when he and the club weren't doing well, he went to party all night and pretended to be sick.

The thing is, playing at the top level isn't for everyone, and I know he's young, but all footballers are. If he wants to change the narrative, then he has to play better, and stop this whole PR shit that's alienating him even more from the fanbase.

He needs to remind us forgetful folk.

Tbh he comes across as a rather good lad in that monologue posted on page 8.
Says all the right things, doesn't look arrogant and has a rather calm/ shy demenour about him.

Now whether that's really him or just a good written script that he is playing too is not for me to judge, but I think it's highly possibly that stuff gets blown out of porportion by the media.

It still doesn't explain though why he can't seem to get arsed to run/ fight/ tackle/ care on the pitch.

It’s because he’s an introvert who has a small group of friends and he doesn’t listen to the noise around the game

It’s hilarious that at 26.5 people are still holding out for a lazy pace merchant to “come good”. Coming good at Man Utd means helping the club win the top major honours. On what planet are the people who think this mediocre player can play a major part in doing so?

Amazing the amount of hatred in this thread, some real venom. Do other clubs have those sorts of issues towards their players? I saw a poster recently (Chelsea fan I think) say something about how we hate all our players. Is there some truth to that?

Next year there’ll be threads on Garnacho and Mainoo I’m betting.
I believe I am speaking for most of the older fans here - We're just sick of the media circus and long for the days our players prove their point on the pitch. He already enjoys greater leeway as a homegrown player.

Judge a man by his actions, not his words.

Those doubting that he wrote any of it can hear it from the horses mouth!

It's an odd thing to put out right now though, given the very public conversation about his lack of effort in games. All he had to do was work harder in games and people would shut up. Instead he went the let's get a production team together and film me while I talk about all the lies and clout chasers. It's fecking dumb as feck.

Well that aint happening since the older days didn't have all this constant outside pressure. Article after article with drama to keep you scrolling.

We keep saying that the media is ABU and keeps trashtalking our club, but we almost never extend that to include our players who receive a constant barrage of criticism, warranted or not. Putting lies in their mouths and coming up with stories of division because it's the easiest thing to get people to believe when they are already unhappy with recent performances.

Has Rashford been playing well this season? No, not on a regular basis. But that's true for our entire team. That collective underperforming has to have something to do with how we're set up to play and our tactics. People used to complain that there was no tactics only individual brilliance. Where did the individual brilliance go? Did all the players lose it at the same time?

Instead of us united fans bringing our own to the ground, why can't we Sing his name in games maybe that could inspire him to preform.

I don't care what people write about you. I care why you're so shit and unreliable on the pitch. That is all.

Sell him to PSG. We should get as much as we got for Ronaldo at least.

He’s lost touch with reality the lad.
Now let’s cut through it, Pushing the whole rag to riches story and a challenging upbringing at a time when a lot of people are massively struggling for so many reasons. Just smacks of a lack self awareness. Is he expecting a load of sympathy? You got four buses to football?
Well so did I and many other people who still didn’t end up making it.
This is the first time in his career where he’s actually been criticised by the media/pundits for his performances and this is the reaction. This is the problem when you surround yourself with yes men for years. This is the problem when you prioritise your image, partying and the lifestyle of being a footballer as opposed to trying to be an actual footballer.
The insinuation that the criticism stems from jewellery and tattoos or anything else is a complete red herring. It is all down to Marcus Rashford playing like absolute shit for several months, walking around the pitch and being outperformed by teenagers.
I 95% wanted him gone in the summer before this PR release. That’s now turned to 100%.

I am sick of him. He is an absolute disgrace.

Nobody cares about his form, players can struggle with that, but he makes virtually no effort and looks like he doesn't care, because well, he doesn't.

Get out of here with your pathetic sob story.

Or slip him an extra 50k a week for good vibes? Maybe massage his balls for him

This is all good and well, but he needs to back it up with performances on the pitch.

But in fairness, not just him. Everyone else needs to do the same. That includes EtH, who continuously talks about what it takes to play for United. But what about what it takes to manage United? He's not shown enough either.

There's enough collective blame to go around.

"My family turned down life changing money so I could wear this badge. so never doubt my commitment to the club"
Oh, he's lost touch with reality right enough! He is already on 'life changing money'. Money most fee paying supporters won't see in a lifetime of proper work! Sick of him.

Clearly never attended a game because you would know that United’s match attending a fans, both home and Away support our players even when they are struggling.

He’s had nothing but patience and adulation for years despite his lack of effort.

This forum does not represent all fans, but the ones criticising him like myself are well entitled too.

If you’d been to a game recently, saw his lack of effort and body language you’d be pissed too.

only one person to blame and that’s Marcus.

He’s no victim FFS

They sing his name every game, I don't think that's the problem. The fans might groan from time to time but they'd never actively turn on a homegrown player like Rashford.

I actually found it fairly refreshing to see him talk like a human to camera, everything around him normally feels so stage managed.

Not saying he should have done this whole piece (I'm of the opposite opinion) but I liked this aspect at least.

Sticking around doesn’t get you goals.

I think he was focused on the drinking episode. I think we have moved on from that. The bigger problem is his effort on the pitch. Is he being instructed to save his energy to attack? If so, I have nothing to say. If he is supposed to press and track back when we lose possession and he doesn't, he is a fool for not realising his own failings.

What do you mean that this outside pressure never existed in the older days? You used to get the mainstream media (which the majority of people trusted) spinning the same sort of lies you read on socials. You also have the physical hounding and threats by the pappazi and hooligans/ultras.

If anything, it's way more sanitised these days and easier to search for clarifications from level headed people rather than letting the gossip run amok for weeks/months.

Back to the main topic - are most United fans frustrated/angry at Rashford because they don't think he loves the club, or because he has not been putting in effort on the pitch, let alone perform well?

IMHO what Rashford has done is create a strawman argument. And again, action speaks louder than words. Even in personal relationships you can't just keep using words of affirmation, you've got to show up and put in the effort.

True, but it would be on Ten Hag too.
If a player doesn't obey to instructions from the coaching staff than it's on the coaching staff to bench that player.

It's literally a stage managed interview, isn't it?

That's the part that bothers me the most. He's trying to push a false narrative instead of looking at his own performance. I don't think someone with that state of mind will ever be able to reach his full potential.

“genius” and ”Rashford” in the same sentence
