The Former United Youth/Reserves Thread

Jacob Butterfield has scored four goals for Gateshead who are fighting for promotion to the EFL.

Mipo Odubeko has signed for Shelbourne on a free transfer.

Burton Albion have loaned Owen Dodgson from Burnley.
Did Mipo play for United?

How have I missed Largie Ramazani moving to Leeds? Anyway we could see him in the PL next season. A goal every 141 minutes in all comps this season.

Who were the few young players we have signed under Ineos?

Heaven (Yet to come through the doors)
Sekou Koné, Chidi Obi Martin (Playing for 21s)

Wasn't there a Lusale and another young player signed? Does anyone know if they have played at all as I haven't seen anything of them.

Lusale has played a bit, not sure he's that good. James Overy played once or twice I think but got a really bad injury. Think he's rehabilitating in Australia, not sure.

Thanks for the update, the club do a poor job keeping you updated for those that want to see more of the academy kids

In fairness - the work we have done with the U16 and U18 over the last 3-4 years has been really good - both in terms of signing but also developing youngsters. Going back 10 years we were far behind both City and Chelsea - but over the last 3-4 years we are back to being the best club in the country.

So in this respect, I would say that Ineos has continued a positive trend - but not necessarily improved it.

I can't remember every youngster we signed domestically over the last 3-4 years but the Fletchers came the summer of 23, and as I recall we signed Scanlon and Sharpe (and one more) from Derby sometime during 2021 and I think Ennis joined from Liverpool about the same time. Collyer joined the season after and I think Harrison joined from Stevenage in 2022 as well. Biancheri joined 2023 as I recall. And we also signed a 16 year old called Emmanuel Ziro a few months ago. There are probably quite a few I forgot.

But our track record for signing youngsters over the last 4 or so seasons - has been excellent.

Curley immediately on Stoke's first-team bench in the FA Cup.

Ethan Laird scored after 44 seconds for Birmingham against Newcastle.

Will Keane and Robbie Brady score for Preston today in the cup

Maxi Oyedele delivered a masterclass against Molde today. Was subbed in before extra time and ran the whole midfield. Had the assist to the winning goal as well

Not sure if it's been mentioned els where but there's a new podcast called "More Than a Match" presented by ex academy player D'mani Mellor and they have a few players from the academy on it.

First ep is with Brandon Williams but there are future episodes with James Garner, Joe Rothwell and Gabby George to name a few.

Only started watching it but Brandon comes across quite well. I hope he's done some growing up and shame he hasn't found a club.

An interview with James Scanlon for FIFA.com claims that Luca now plays for Burnley. Would link but don't currently have permissions.

Excellent article. Everyone should go and read it.

"“I see people say that if he doesn’t make it to United’s first team, he’s a flop. No. There’s no such thing as a ‘flop’. There’re just steps to success, steps to where you want to get to.” And as Savage would argue, leaving the academy is often not a step down but a step forward."

Savage has done really well for himself. Established himself as a starter in League 1 - could see him in the P.L in a few years (just like his dad who went to the P.L at 23)

Yeah he has 16 G+A this season for Reading in all comps who's sitting on Play-off spot in League One. Certainly doing much better than many here expected.

Wrexham promoted to the Championship after a 3-0 win over Charlton. Sam Smith scored two, Ollie Rathbone the other & Matty James was also among the starters.

Let's see if Charlie Savage and Reading makes it to the Play-off, currently sitting 7th, same points with 6th Leyton Orient who's in a freak form winning all of their last 5 games.

Charlie himself is on 20 G/A in all comps, great form.

Speaking of Charlie Savage, Wrexham could do much worse than getting him, he is clearly ready for the Championship and with all the backstory of his family being from the area, could be a story that they would like to sell.

Brilliant return, what sort of position is he playing for them?

Wow. That’s an excellent return.

Any idea how Zidane Iqbal is doing in the Eredivisie?

I came across this recently - seems to be doing quite well as a midfielder. I remember when the FdJ pursuit fell through and Ten Hag said we will develop that type of skillset within the squad, Iqbal would be one of the candidates. I rated him quite highly, so happy to see him doing well. I think we even have a buyback and sell on (40% of profit). Let's see how it turns out.

Owen Dodgson has also been playing regularly for Burton on League One this season (on loan from Burnley since Jan) and they managed to stay up. I think a lot of less highly rated youngsters like him could do with moving down the pyramid early and getting that football league experience during the key age 18-21 (realistically it's tricky to assess your own abilities to make the right move that results on too many youngsters hanging around for too long).

After mostly on the bench for the first half of the season Will Fish ended up starting regularly for Cardiff on the Championship. They obviously got relegated though, finishing bottom of the table.

Di'Shon Bernard continues to forge out a decent Championship career, playing regularly for Sheffield Wednesday whom finished midtable.

Ramazani and Hannibal obviously the pick of the bunches there, getting direct promotion with Leeds and Burnley (Burnley has some former Carrington lads on their U21s as usual but only Hannibal and Josh Brownhill are regular 1st team players). Rothwell also get promoted with Leeds but he's on loan from Bournemouth.

Teden Mengi unfortunately suffered a knee injury this season that ruled him out for 4-5 months. This contributed to Luton's terrible form this season as they got relegated back-to-back.

Will Keane struggled badly for Preston this season after being good last season. They managed to avoid relegation last minutes.

George Tanner continued to build up a very solid career, regular starter for Bristol City who made it to the Championship play-off (I actually don't fancy them to get promoted but you never know). He's actually the one with the best career so far on that crop of him, Gribbin, Dearnley, RoShaun etc

Charlie McNeill made a grand total of 4 appearances on the Championship for Sheffield Wednesday, all from the bench. Scored twice for them on the first round of EFL Cup though.

Ben Pearson, Jordan Thompson, Jimmy Dunne, Regan Poole, Joe-Rankin Costello, Duncan Watmore, Ben Whiteman... other names who played regularly or so on the Championship for their respective clubs. (Jimmy Dunne's career is seriously impressive on relative to how he is rated back then and I guess it highlighted the importance of physical attributes to make it as defender in the England's football leagues, compare him with the likes of Lee O'Connor who's impressive technically but still playing in League Two at the moment).

Harley Blair who left us as 12-13 to join Liverpool moved to Portsmouth this season and made 12 appearances in the Championship for them, mostly from the bench.

Luca Scanlon reportedly training with Burnley's U21s and is in line to feature against Cardiff City tomorrow.

Ethan Laird seems to have a cracking season with Birmingham too. He's just 23. I think he'll be a PL player in two years, seems to finally have put his injury troubles behind.

Zidane Iqbal and Oyedele are also doing very good at their respective clubs. expect both to get good moves.
