The First Redcafe Sheep Draft

Thats the thing, isn't it. Sacrificing a pick in order to stop someone else getting him.

This draft is going to be head work.

Ah but then are you wasting a pick on a player who is already going to be banned as another 2 players have picked him?

Mindfeck galore. And feck all of you who went for Nesta!

Yeah, you told me hours after I picked and then I told you, I'm going for him, so you could have backed out as well .

I couldn't I was sleeping ;) I woke up, saw your post and sent you a reminder I was staying put but next thing I know the deadline has been brought forward.

In any case, if you expected me to move away you are mental  You said it yourself, it was my obvious pick, I love the guy to bits, when did he become your obvious pick you steadfastedly had to stick to?

As you said, I'd surely try block two then get the one I wanted all along. ;)

There are two basic approaches to deal with the first round question, I guess. Either you gamble on everyone else considering your man too obvious - or you try to go for someone the others won't think of. I reckon it's half and half among those who passed. Which means I'm pretty sure who at least a couple of these players are. Can't wait to see the result.

Yeah. I suppose if you think you've got a cert as 3rd pick then you could risk it and waste two picks on the obvious suspects. Would take some balls though as the further you go the less players available, and more chance of a Sheep.

I said it yesterday, we will end up fielding the Fulham reserve side if we don't coordinate.

You can't say I didn't warn you. Obvious pick was obvious. I'm positive two of those I mentioned got picked though with so many Nesta-loving spazzos around.

I didn't have an obvious pick, I just wanted the striker thing out of the way, because it'll be a bloodbath later . And I'm 100% certain I get my prefered first round pick with the 3rd attempt as well - and if it's the same as yours, I happily share a sheep.

The "cert" is usually turns out to be the most risky pick, at least that's what I've observed in my time of playing this. Most of successful picks are either complete gambles or complete outsiders which would be better than sheep but not good enough to take you anywhere.

*None of this info has any relation to this draft, of course. :p

Milking it much? ;)

feck sakes. I was convinced that we were getting Nesta. We also discussed Keane and Redondo.

The sheep in this round could be... basically, anyone who hasn't been a top three Ballon d'Or nominee. The invisible Scot is on his way.

I know who he is munchkin.

Then the question is, if you really hound me for blocking Romario or not. I would do him justice though, make him a fantasy draft hero like he deserves to be.

Aye. You may go for a strategy where you've got a dead cert lined up as 3rd pick who isn't a top, top player - say - someone bloody good, but possibly underrated and definitely not an eye catcher. Then you could be reasonably sure to get him whilst at the same time fecking up the pick for your rival managers. But the gamble is that you don't know what questions will be asked next - they could be progressively harder, meaning that your best bet to land, say, a top class striker is actually in the first round.

Brilliant concept, I'd say.

That would be boring, I want a striker bloodbath .

Oh, never - I'm a gentleman. And I don't really think people will be very impressed with my pick. I'd rather try to play that down, to be honest. But I do think someone else has caught himself a prize fish here.

Oh dear, this could get ugly. You lot better make sure there's no sheep in this round.

Surely he is a credible sheep? He played for United after all, even if no one saw him. And then there's the other chap we got from Sunderland, seemed shite but seems to have found some form in France. Fair sheep, right?

Snipers Breath is a Liverpool fan. I do think I can guess who he has picked.

Can someone please pick Cyclops so I move on to the next attempt and do Balu's head in?

This guy is the dog's bollocks, can play right, left, centrally. A real diamond he is.

How do you know that I didn't pick Cyclops?

I think this needs to change. People should go for their own choices. If someone needs to gamble just to block others, then the risk must be higher...and so will the reward be!

Suggested improvements:

1) Backup picks to be restricted to alternate rounds. So on others better be conservative, or you will end up with sheep's. The blocking will be halved. Less fun if everyone uses the first to block, 2nd for their choice and 3rd for rainy day.

2) The player banning's should be confirmed only at end of round. For e.g. in this round, Nesta should be available for 2nd picks too. If anyone picks Nesta again and other 4 change, then the lucky one gets rewarded. Also increases the chances of getting stuck on multiple Nesta's again! :D

Even better, we block each other all the way to a sheep, serves you right for banning my Baixinho
I told you, I'm happy to share a sheep with you in the first round :). I did submit my 2nd attempt pick without reading anything you wrote btw. So if I indeed picked the same, it's again coincidental and really not personal ;).

Christ on a bike, everyone plays with this format, everyone has fun with this format, and you want to change it after the first attempt in round 1?

Once a player is blocked he's out of the draft, that's the fundamental of this format. Deliberate blocking is nothing different from going for a top pick, which is a gamble which may or may not pay off. You are basically going for a top name hoping others back out, and that's really not an issue as far as I can see.

I think the rules are good as they are - the mind games are great fun. Besides, the blocking strategy has the advantage (in my opinion) of "weeding" out some real heavy hitters, making it more interesting as we go along. I don't want Galacticos teams - I want dark horses and dirty tactics.

Exactly, I'm all for blocking and banning the big names.

Brilliant, I like the German "who blinks first challenge", the difference is I'm actually saying who I pick!

I'm not trying to block anyone, rather the opposite!

What's German about that challenge?

But I didn't challenge you . I picked first. Also you guessed my 3rd attempt pick, so if you go for him, you're the one doing the blocking :p (if you're right of course)

How am I blocking when I say who my picks are? If anything, I'm being informative. You can say "you picked first", but I already told anyone paying attention what my first, second and third pick are. If someone blocks me off him in the third attempt I guess we will just have to pick a sheep together. Now that's a stupid way to get a sheep, deliberately blocking someone at the third attempt. :wenger:

You did? See, that's how carefully I read your posts, I've no clue who you're going to pick third .
