The First Redcafe Sheep Draft

Quick question, I see it doesn't quite fit your system, but seeing as you got players to spare, did you not consider Thomas Hassler at all? Had him along with Jesper Olsen in that bag of "safe backups everyone has probably forgotten about". Cracking player.
I was close to going for Hassler. He had some good club links at Roma for the dual round. And his Euro '92 was outstanding.

Of course I did. The Basler - Frings round fecked me over :(. It was all about getting Scholl and out of all the finals in which he faced German players, Frings as the opponent made the most sense, even though I never intended to play him. But then Scholl was blocked and it all went wrong. The last criteria saved my ass with Ziege + Kroos possible. I actually considered Hässler as a wingback in case I missed out on Ziege ;).
You're lucky I didn't go for Ziege as well. He was essentially on a list of two left-backs/wing-backs alongside Carboni come the latter stages.

I expected that. My options were really limited. I was already shitting my pants with Reuter, the Kohler + Reuter round saved my theme. Without it, I would have thrown it away and changed to a Bundesliga theme with Ze Roberto and Salihamidzic as wingbacks. I also thought you might go for Basler after Scholl got blocked, then my 3rd pick would have been Tarnat as leftback :(.

I suppose you weren't looking for the same kind of stuff. I had to write him off instantly, along with Jesper and a few others... Then when I thought Ginola and Kluivert at Newcastle was my only -very risky- choice I remembered Ginola was at PSG.

:D doesn't quite cover it

That was a well timed round and question for you. The moment I read it I thought "wait, only a couple of us have any Germans at all",

You could just assign a random sheep from outside the banned pool to those who don't get anyone, then people wouldn't get this impression that some benefit more than others. I guess you would then have the argument over the sheep having to be from the same pool...

I find it funny this is controversial, what I'm planning may have people up in arms really

Am certainly looking forward to that...

I don't think the sheep thing is controversial, for what it's worth - it's not a super serious kind of game, not to me anyway. But on that note it would be a point to force people to actually use their sheep, as it would definitely add to the comic value of the matches.

If we had played a less forgiving version - only one attempt per round - this would have played a larger role. But I completely understand Aldo's decision to make this first one a bit of a test run, as it were. Next time around we should do it in hard mode, though.

I hope that sentiment is shared because I'm working on putting together sheep, constraints, realism and auctions, all in one package. feck knows how that will work out.
Noo no auctions!

Although if you want I can give you the link of a similar draft I played which had all these mixed up. What a fecking mindfeck.

After Andersson I was a bit concerned about having to drop in Kuffour or Tarnat. I'm sure Cutch got fecked over for having Tarnat in a recent draft game.

When you said winger and Premiership I immediately though Chris Waddle whose list of clubs is longer than my arm and who was nothing short of immense for OM.

I fecking love Kuffour. Would have defended him all game long :D. I think Fergus'son had Tarnat once? But there really was no love for Tarnat in that game, even though he wasn't a bad player at all. I was never going for Andersson though and you picked the CL final in '01, so you couldn't go for Basler, therefore it wasn't a problem in the end. If we both blocked each other with Tarnat in the 3rd attempt, I would have cried (and probably ended up with Ali Daei as my sheep, can't believe he actually played in that cup final against Bremen in '99).

Aye, I had Waddle down alongside Francescoli. Problem was they played together :(

You can see why I was upset at the no overlap thingie, much of my remaining shortlist of LW-ST had been put together thinking about partners!

I seriously pondered going for him. Two things got in the way, though. He was at OM at the same time as Amoros - and what I really needed was a left winger. Waddle started out on the left (and was left footed) but it was on the opposite flank he really made a name for himself.

Always liked him - brilliant to watch when he was on song.

Yes, it was Fergus, not Cutch. And I don't see the problem with Sammy, had him on my shortlist as well ahead of many who have been picked.

Much of what I saw of him at OM was on the left iirc. In any case, why not play Barnes on the left? I actually had him down to play there!

Yeah I'd have stuck Barnes left.

And Barnes and Waddle, it worked well for England. :nervous:

Can't remember him playing much on the left at all - he was yer typical wrong footed winger to me. But Christ knows I hardly remember my own birth date these days...

Aye, Barnes was on my list - I was too cocky there, though. I figured that he would pass under the radar for longer than he did. In retrospect my big feck-up was going for Lineker when I did. If I had known I would end up with Henke, I could have done something very different. Still - I can now fully go for my "12 man team" plan.

Chris Waddle:

When I joined Newcastle from non-League Tow Law, I had played inside left. When I got into the Newcastle team it was as a left winger but it was soon apparent to me that if I couldn't get past the full back, I had fewer options cutting in from the left and on to my right foot. So I worked on my right for hours; in the gym banging the ball against the wall, from 10 yards, then longer distances, eventually crossing it from longer distances. I'd work on the training ground with one of the young apprentices or young keepers, just trying all the time to make my right foot stronger so I could use it to cross or shoot in games. Eventually I asked to play on the right because I wanted to be able to use both feet to their full strength. I think I hardly played on the left again after that.

I would have sworn you had Barnes, certainly saw him in a setup that implied he would be on the right. Who got him then?

I really wanted Larsson, he was the one I was scouring KNVB cups for hoping to find something, anything he could credibly be paired up with... Nothing. Even looked into Scottish cups :( I wasn't keen on getting stuck with Celtic or a ransacked Barca side.

Chris Waddle:

I knew he played largely on the right, particularly for England, but I'm positive he must have played on the left a fair bit in that season Francescoli had at OM. I distinctly remember finding it odd at first. Seems it was
