The first Ashes Test

KP and Colly look reasonably well set at the moment. Lots of steely resolve, and all that. Fingers crossed.

Wow, that sounded close, too close.

Anybody here watching live? I'm listening to the BBC meself, Blowers thought that was it for a second.

Bumble said that the umpire Bowden said his arthritis in his elbow was playing up and he said that means rains on the way. They will slaughter Ponting if we get a draw out of this:lol:

Flintoff has just been caught, and it weren't pretty neither.

Not what we needed at all, 35 minutes of the day left, so Jones is the last front line batsman then, although Giles can hold his own well enough, and Hoggard can block for a while, it's just after that...

Boycott just can't believe Freddie tried to go for that shot and at a time like this, to say that it isn't happy about it would be quite an understatement.

Too many of our batsmen have got out through their own poor judgement and that'll cost you. And it is something that the Aussies haven't done.

Game over man.

We're not done yet, most people didn't think we'd make it this far. Our first target is for KP and Jones to survive the onslaught of the new ball and the first session tomorrow.

Oh and didn't you know, Mother Nature is a member of the Barmy Army, we'll see that rain in the nick of time. ;)

Well, we've lost the first test.

The most important test will be the 2nd, if by some good fortune England manage to win that, then we'll run it close and could win the series, if we lose it then it'll be a whitewash.

I'm pleasantly suprised this game isn't already over. Just had a look at the highlights. As someone else said the problem really is the number of players who have just given their wickets away. Flintoff really ought to have known better. At least Collingwood stayed there most of the day before having his rush of blood. If I'd been in the dressing room when Strauss came back from the wicket I'd have punched the stupid cnut. I thought it was footballers who were supposed to be thick, don't all cricketers have a public school education? Strauss showed all the intelligence of Paul Dickov.

Just heard Freddie on 5 Live:

When you do that with cricketers, taking the piss by making them bat again – I’ve kept really quiet, but I’ll tell you something: he went down in my estimation when he did that – we’ve not resorted to that. But I’ll tell ya – you can tell him now if you’re watching it – we’re still fighting for this test match, and he’s got to go out tomorrow and get five wickets, and… and I tell you honestly, I’d love it if we hold out and it pisses it down – love it!

Thing is, when we're all out for 157, and they then get 201-1 on an older pitch, you can't really complain that they're taking the piss - they felt they had plenty of time to bowl us out, and they were right. Freddie has no-one to blame for the humiliation but himself and his players.

Exactly. No complaints can be made about the toss either. They've been by far the better side. And at 201-1. . .they could've easily matched their first innings total. (I actually think the pitch is very good.)

The joke is, that despite everything, if we hadn't thrown our wickets away, again, we would actually have a slim chance of holding out on the fifth day.

One positive: Pietersen gave Warne a right old battering. 1-0 in that particular psychological war...about 35-0 to the Aussies in all others...

He's always done well against Warne. I must admit, that I don't really like the cnut. What's it with South Africans?

Most of the wickets were down to batsman error, rather than the state of the pitch wicket.

Actually there was a matter of debate within the England camp regards the toss - it was a good toss to lose, it took the indecision away from the captain.

The pitch has been pretty good through out the test match, I don't think there will be much wrong with it tonight, either. Sure, sometimes the toss makes a difference, but the way Australia batted in their second innings, after bowling England out for a poultry sum, showed the England batsmen for being really inept. An excuse was being used after England's first innings, that the toss made the difference, but Australia proved it not to be the case. How hard can it be to buckle down, and graft runs?? (bar Pietersen, who seemingly can't). What an all round athetic display.

That's excellent. You had me there for a moment.

Knowing as little as I do about cricket I may be wrong. However, I fear that the whitewash that I have joked about might be reality since the Gabba was the ground that the pundits seemed to think was the most suited to England's game.

I suspect that two England players who were siting in the stands for this match will be in the team for the next.
