The first Ashes Test

Err... ok, half an hour to the third day. Backs to the wall job boys.

What with all those sheep shaggers about.

Probably.

Well well, England has some luck back withit, for now. :)

How important could that prove to be come Monday, hopefully very. :D

EDIT: Oh it's 75/3 by the way, for those not following it live.

Oh well, that's KP gone then, better him than Bell though.

Come on Freddie!!! We need you to bat as well as you bowled and stick around too.

He's out?

I knew it. He was starved for runs. Aussies did a good job on him.

It has gotten worse and i spoke too soon it would seem, Freddie's gone for naught. :(

It's all well and good Bell dropping anchor but somebody's gotta hang in there with them too or we'll be seeing Strauss and Cook again before we know it.

feck.

A few good size cracks have appeared and the pitch will take spin. It's going to be a loss by a huge margin.

Not all players can play defensive though, TRF. Peiterson can't, for example. Which is why he's out.

well, looks like we better start planning for the 2nd test.

we need to regroup and learn how to play farking cricket

Ian Bell reaches his half century. :)

And well done to him, a silver lining to today's dark batting cloud eh.

Who in Australia only 18 months ago would've thought that he could be England's rock in a situation like this. You see that's the thing, if only Harmison could find his line and length again, he could do likewise and restore some pride and then some.

Harmison needs dropping, never mind all this 'we know what he can do' that Botham keeps saying, lets worry about what he is doing, which is give away shit loads of runs

Well either way, he too is now out.

There is some debate over whether the Aussies are going to enforce the follow on or not, and the word is that they're not goint to.

If the Aussies want to give Harmison and the other bowlers more time to find their form, unnecessarily too, then hopefully we can seize this opportunity.

Also eats up some valuable time and you never know how important that might turn out to be.

Let's keep positive.

The Aussies are batting again.

Never will I understand the thinking behind this - Aussies going absolutely berserk, are the trying to inflict psychological damage on England?

I can't really think of any other explanations for not following on.

They are taking the piss to prove a point, the experts were saying it was a batting track first day and then said it had turned when we got into bat and it belittled the Aussie bowlers, so they bat again, smash more runs in a couple of hours than we managed in our first innings for the loss of one wicket to show everyone there is nothing wrong with the wicket.

I think we should give Joyce a go in the second test, someone the Aussies havent faced before and maybe even drop Harmison, he is to poor

The TV experts here reckon it's for a number of reasons.
1 To rest the Aussie bowlers with the 2nd test so close, two short days in the field rather than one long one.
2 To humiliate the English and put them under more psychological pressure.
3 Pressure from Cricket Australia to make it last into the 5th day for extra revenue.

I reckon it's the second personally.

Thanks for that then boys, sterling effort.

fecking hell. This is all we need, Aussies taking the piss. We're going to lose this test match by about 600 runs. Ponting is doing nothing for the Aussie tourist industry. I was thinking about going out to Sydney for the 5th Test. New Years Eve on the piss in Sydney Harbour, bit of sightseeing, watch the test match and the 20/20, maybe shag a Sheila. feck that. If I want to shag a Sheila I'll go to Earls Court.

Anyone think that the 43 contributed by Jones and Giles justified the inclusion of an inferior spinner and keeper?

Ponting was right to stick the boot in by batting second. Reinforces that the pitch is not bad, and gives Warne a chance to impose himself on the English batsmen on the final 2 days.

I'd written us off after the first test last time, so I'll do us a favour and write us off again!

It makes sense of you consider the possibility that england miracalously get 500 + runs in their second innings and have a lead of some sorts. The aussies will have to bat on a 5th day pitch whereas this way they get the runs early and negate any chance of england winning and also give warne the last two days to wreak havoc.

Yes. He was probably too scared of batting on the last day, possibly(improbably) chasing a 100+ total. Australia have a history of buggering up small chases. But still, I don't see the need at all to be batting on the 4th day. Ponting's clearly a coward.

Absolutely, England would have been 100+ up on the final day, Harmison and Flintoff charging in like men possessed on a wicket that's totally broken up.

This proves we've got them on the run.
