That was my understanding.
But that in most cases won’t be possible.. If someone picked X and Y and the other picked X and Z; the only option is Y and Z to be picked together which is again blocked.

That's the risk and reward in making that choice. You corner yourself for a high value pick, you pay higher penalty.
not sure why are people surprised, we didnt say anything about being locked to player and in this case that doesnt make sense as most players only have one link.
Was going to bring up the point about what if someone has one relative you’d be stuck.
I'm completely confused now. Do I have my second player already? What criteria should my second pick fit into?

My understanding is they're not locked into those players, so Pele, his son, and his dad are all blocked, and they go for another family pairing

I get it now. Lionel Messi and Pelé, the players, are blocked, and the other player doesn't get picked. Everyone who failed needs to pick a new pair of players.

This isn't a locked in a game case whereby there are still about 20 other players. Most are pairs or trios. Pairs would be double blocked but in the case of trios, if stuck with one there would be no remaining partner to pick as rhe other geezer would have picked him. It would be funny for about 5 minutes, much better to be left guessing who passed and who may still be in play.
There was a comms mistake though in that, following the Dopey example, you should have just seen Fail and not who tried for Pelé or Messi. The blocked list was enough.
