The F1 Thread 2015 Season

Strange for Lotus to subject of confirmation.
They were not a team I thought would be in trouble, if thats what it means .

Why not? They've been in trouble for over a year, even not paying Raikkonen (and Grosjean too, I think) for parts of last season. They had an investment falling through... And then they go and sign bloody Maldonado. They are definitely one of the teams in trouble.

They'll be on the grid next year, no doubt.

I'm going to follow the F1 season very closely this year, after playing driving games for so long, watching Top Gear etc. I've just decided that now's the time to bite the bullet and get watching the spectacle and drama.

If @Rado_N likes it, it must be good. Actually wait, that must be wrong. :p

I hope it improves from 2014!!

That story I read about all the engines, bar Honda, being able to be worked upon seems a bit harsh

Honda. I know they want to restrict the arms race on engines - but they can't want situations where some engines are really too much better than the rest

Well if Honda want to follow by the current regs then they wouldn't be supplying McLaren an engine until next year.

Honda are just being subject to the same rules as others were for the first season, otherwise they would have two development windows for the engine in one year, compared to others having one.

New Super Licence points system from 201606 Jan 2015

Formula One racing’s governing body, the FIA, has revealed details of a new Super Licence points system, making it harder for drivers to become eligible for F1 competition.

From 2016, drivers must have accumulated 40 points over a three-year period, with points allocation based on which other motorsport series they have participated in and the level of results they achieved.

Drivers will have also have to be at least 18-years old, have spent at least two years in junior single-seater categories, hold a valid road driver’s licence and pass a test on the Formula One sporting regulations. The existing requirement of completing 300 kilometres in a recent F1 car also remains.

The junior categories eligible for points, in order of weighting, are: a future FIA F2 championship (60 points for winner), GP2 (50), FIA F3 European championship (40), FIA WEC (LMP1 only) (40), IndyCar (40), GP3 (30), Formula Renault 3.5 (30), Japanese Super Formula (20), national FIA-certified F4 championships (10), national F3 championships (10) and Formula Renault (EuroCup, ALPS or NEC) (5).

If such a system had been in place ahead of 2015, new Toro Rosso signing Max Verstappen would be ineligible to race in F1 this year, having accrued just 20 points by finishing third in the 2014 FIA F3 European championship - the 17-year-old's only season of car racing to date.

Going to our first ever GP this year Monza, nice Christmas present off the Mrs. Staying in Bellagio Lake Como for a week so need to sort getting to and from Monza on the Sat/Sun, any tips or advice will be greatly appreciated.

I've no idea about travel from Lake Como itself but presume it'll be a case of getting into Milan and then from there to Monza?

When I went we stayed a few streets from Milan Central Station and there's a few trains that run from there to Monza village, it's pretty easy.

Only thing to bear in mind is there are two different train services, think of it as Virgin Trains vs Northern Rail. On the Thursday we mistakenly got tickets for the Virgin one which had allocated seats and was bit more plush, we were sat with two local businessmen and ended up taking about United!

Next day we realised we'd paid somewhat more than necessary and used the local service for the other days which was cheaper.

I can't remember whether Friday was covered by the free busses from Monza station to the circuit, but I do know Thursday definitely wasn't and its a fair walk (not ridiculous, but a decent distance).

Saturday and Sunday are obviously covered by the bus service but Sunday in particular is very busy, especially after the race, the morning isn't too bad as a lot of people arrive later.

If you have a weekend ticket then you get access to the pit lane on the Thursday which is pretty cool, you can see into all the garages and they're usually wheeling cars around on stands so you'll get within touching distance of the cars and there's usually a few drivers around for autograph and photo opportunities.

Friday is obviously practice sessions as well as the support races and is usually quiet in terms of crowd numbers so use this as a chance to move around the circuit and get a view from different places, you'll be able to get into any grandstand you like.

If you're looking for good photos of the cars I recommend the exit from Ascari chicane, the cars are going slower so you'll get some good shots there, often with multiple cars in shot.

There's a spot right on the entry to that chicane too (opposite side) which is where the cars are braking from their fastest point and when we were there they sounded incredible, not sure what these new ones will sound like but worth checking out.

Saturday gets a bit busier as quali rolls around but is still not full, and Sunday is absolute madness with people everywhere so get there early.

After the race they open the gates and let you on track. Unless you're right at the front you're never going to get near the podium so what we did was stay in the grandstand, get some amazing photos of the podium with the crowd underneath, and then after the presentation head onto the track and walk around the circuit.

If I think of anything else useful I'll post more later, but for now I'll just say I'm mega jealous and you'll absolutely love it!!

Thanks for the info, we will more than likely only be going on the Sat/Sun as we're about 60K from Monza plus I don't think her indoors will want to spend four days of the holiday at the track! We've got weekend tickets and seats in Parabolica Interna 23A which is the stand on the final bend close to the start/finish and the beginning of the pit-lane so we should see plenty of the action.

Thursday is only a few hours really cos the pitlane access is only available to weekend ticket holders for a set time, otherwise it's paddock club members only.

Fair enough though that's a fair way to travel each day.

Enjoy!

The Korean Grand Prix has officially been dropped from the calendar for the 2015 Formula 1 season, meaning a total of 20 races will be held.

The race was added to the schedule, at least on a provisional basis, last month but the proposed May 3 date is now clear according to the official calendar on the FIA website.

The event was not part of the 2014 calendar after being held for four years at the Korea International Circuit in Yeongnam - Sebastian Vettel won the last three races held there after Fernando Alonso's victory in the inaugural Korean GP.

Formula 1 supremo Bernie Ecclestone admitted the race had to be put on the calendar for legal reasons even though he confirmed local organisers 'would rather it not happen'.

Last month, he said: "We have a contract with Korea... we have to put it on the calendar. If we hadn't they could have sued us. We let them off for a year on the understanding they would be back."

With no race now scheduled for Korea there is a three-week gap between the Bahrain Grand Prix on April 19 and the start of the European leg of the season in Spain on May 10.

The 20-race season will kick off on March 15 in Australia and finish on November 29 in Abu Dhabi with every race shown live on Sky Sports F1.

Good, it's a snoozefest. Waste of a live race
Yep smart idea IMO. While Monaco is 1 of the golden oldies so to speak, in the modern day it's a complete waste of time IMO. Always the most boring race of the year with minimal overtakes.

If I had my way I would drop it completely, or make them drive go karts around it instead.

I would never drop it, I would find a way to make the race more exciting, but how , I have no idea on so tight a track.

With today's fragile cars that rely so heavily on downforce it is impossible. They break on any contact and lose all handling when they get anywhere near another car, the only way would be to have a special series of cars for that 1 race in particular, but I can't see that really working.

Maybe changing the format to a time trial shoot out would work out better, having to nail 5 laps better than your opponent or something like that, then as you knock a driver out the winners head off for points. Would be more exciting than it is right now anyway.

You can't change the format of a single race in a series, it would be a farce.

They need to sort aero regs out completely so that cars can follow each other without it completely ruining the stability.

Sort that and give them proper tyres.

Monaco's shit. It's just an excuse for the presenters to go on a jolly and tell the viewers how much fun they're having. For some reason, the viewing public has bought into that and decided it's a great spectacle.

Hardly shit. I thoroughly enjoyed being there and thought it was a great spectacle.
