The F1 Thread 2013 Season

Superb from Hamilton, the overtakes on Button & Webber gave him the victory today. Raikonnen just has ridiculous awareness of where to put his car on the track, some great defending against Vettel

Ferrari need to get the finger out, wasting a talent like Alonso is a crime.

The overtake is not the issue, its the fact he cut across the chicane which is why he got the drive through. The collision in the overtake will be reviewed after the race.

Stand corrected, turn 4 issue. Which is a little harsh considering the amount of people running off there today.

Hamilton was class and he's clearly getting more and more settled at Merc.

Just seen the calender and there's another 3 week break which makes it 1 race in 6 weeks. Odd scheduling to say the least.

Sucks for us fans but the teams need that summer break. The races come thick and fast in October and November.

Ferrari had a good car that worked well with the 2013 spec tyres. However the change in tyres has hurt them more than most. Lotus don't seem as effected as Ferrari.

I dont believe tyres will be that much of an issue now, Pirelli have built a tyre that will be more durable mainly due to the Silverstone race.
I believe the tyre wear we saw earlier made the racing more interesting. It was down to the teams to get the correct balance which Mercedes and to a lesser extent Red Bull struggled with.
Silverstone was a one off ( tyre failure rather than tyre wear ) but Pirelli had little choice after that.
Fact was that Pirelli could manufacture a tyre that can last a whole race, but that is not what the teams or anyone else wanted.
Problem was that teams that couldn't come to terms with the tyres , Mercedes in particular cried until they got there own way.
So now we will have a more durable tyre and more predictable, some might say boring racing.

The tyre issues will still come up i think, high degradation circuits like Suzuka and thermal degradation ones of Singapore & Brazil will still cause some issues with teams.

It was Red Bull that was doing the more vocal complaints about the tyres, however today's race was anything but boring!

I enjoyed that race, Well done to Hamilton deserved his win. Vettle and red bull will be ruing how long it took him to get around button, their lack of top speed down the straights really does hamper them at times with over taking clearly slower cars.

Red Bull considering Fernando Alonso for 2014 Formula 1 seat

It's just a rumour at the moment but imagine Alonso at RBR.
Indian GP may be dropped from 2014, there was always going to be some races dropped.
Only been on the calender since 2011, I doubt if the circuit will be used much if F1 drops them.

Confirmed that India will be removed from the 2014 calander but they will be back in 2015, something to do with tax.

I don't see Alonso at Red Bull as a fit. I mean he's under contract, it would unsettle Vettel (heh), there are viable options available in Raikkonen and Ricciardo. Unless Vettel and Alonso just swapped seats I can't see why Red Bull would do this deal, they really wouldn't gain much from doing it. Vettel himself was asked about it on Sunday and pretty much told the world he doesn't get on with Alonso.

I don't think anyone on the grid gets along with Alonso, I just want to see what he's capable of doing in a car designed by Newey.

Webber and Alonso are mates, funny old game innit.

The 2007 McLaren was practically a car with Newey DNA still largely in it so I guess technically we have seen him in one before, he was pretty good as was his Rookie teammate.

Alonso won't happen at Red Bull, not for ability reasons, simply because Raikonnen/Ricciardo are cheaper options. They're not exactly short on driver talent already with Vettel.

Just doesn't make sense, the Carlos Sainz Jr. reason seems more plausible.

Hulk talking to Lotus as one of his options. It just seems nailed on for Kimi to go to Red Bull.

would be funny to see Kimi if he went to Red Bull, and he was leading in a race with Vettel behind him and he was told to let him pass.
I doubt if he would like it very much.
I dont think it will happen, I think it will be Ricciardo, mind you would be something to see Kimi in a Red Bull car.

Red Bull would only issue that order if it was late in the season and Vettel was in contention for the WDC when Kimi wasn't. If that was the case (unlikely IMO) then Kimi wouldn't have an issue, he's done it before for Massa, and that was from absolutely miles in front.

Cant see past Ricciardo for Red Bull, forget Alonso that is not going to happen.
Kimi is possible but very unlikely as Vettel is the Golden Boy and I cant see why they would risk unsettling him.
If it was Kimi I think Vettel would get the better of him, bit hot and cold Kimi is.

My rating of drivers at the moment would probably actually be

Kimi/Alonso > Hamilton/Vettel > Button/Webber

Rating the top drivers always comes down to personal opinion, but I think its fair to say we have 4 World Champions who are all world class in Vettel, Alonso, Hamilton and Kimi. We are lucky that the quality at the front of the grid is so high these days, its a golden period in terms of world class talent even if one driver has won the last 3 WDC's and probably is the best bet to win this year too, its not very often you get that mix of talent.

It's the modern age Piquet, Senna, Prost, Mansell battles. Now we have seemingly removed the cheese tyres out of the equation, barring Red Bull finding their usual dominant pace in the second half we should have a great battle between them.

Hard to judge on who is the best when these cars are so uneven at the moment; Alonso isn't a shade of what he was last season, and Button has just been given an awful car the entire season.

As for the 2 most exciting drivers, for me I can't see past Hamilton or Raikonnen. The moves they have made in their careers have been nothing short of stunning, and with these current tyres it has pissed me off so much in the fact that we have seen far from the best of Lewis, especially in that Spanish GP where he Qualied 2nd and came 12th; he simply wasn't allowed to drive the car to it's limits due to tyre degradation, and in the end it cost him huge.

People underrate the importance of being a good qualifier. If Kimi joins Redbull next season, I'll put my bet on vettel to come out on top.

There's nothing wrong with Kimi's qualifying, and his race craft is outstanding.

I'd absolutely love to see him in a Red Bull next year, it'd be a fantastic battle between him and Vettel.

No way Hamilton is better than Kimi. Kimi and Alonso probably the 2 best around tbh.

I am rating them on their careers more than at ATM. Don't think Alonso or Vettel have ever finished behind their team mate.
When Alonso and Hamilton were team mates it was 10- 7 Alonso altough they finished with the same points.
After the pit lane drama McLaren gave up on Alonso and because of that blew what should have been their championship.
Raikkonen has finished behind his team mate 2 or 3 times .
Alonso has been dragging a dead horse about since he went to Ferrari yet still manages to fight for the championship year in year out.
Hamilton ATM is driving better than anyone, but he needs everyone to love him and tell him how good he is.
Vettel, I feel can be underated by some despite his fantastic win in a Toro Rosso and being 3 times World Champion.

I think Hamilton is the best driver on pure speed but he needs to match the consistency of Kimi and Alonso.

He still lets off track stuff affect his on track stuff too much. Should come in time with experience, this Merc move certainly seems to have settled him down a bit but I also think Ross Brawn is one of the very best at handling his drivers, McLaren was perhaps a little too sterile and robotic for him by the end.

Not sure he can put anything down to a lack of experience anymore, he's been in F1 since 2007 and was being groomed by McLaren for years before that.

I agree working under Brawn should help him, but he has to put his driving at the top of his priority list himself.

As for who are the best drivers, I don't think there's much to chose between Alonso, Vettel, Kimi and Lewis, but with everyone on absolute top form I'd probably say Alonso shades it.

I was talking more in terms of life experience, I know he's now 28 but hes been under the wing of McLaren since he was kid, so a new team is a completely new experience and it should be a good thing. I think by the end the whole McLaren environment was grating, something definately changed in the relationship in 2011 and I believe he was looking for a way out long before 2012 arrived.

If you had to choose one driver and lets assume for the sake of argument they are all the same age at the peak of their powers, I'd choose Alonso. On any given day Alonso always has the lowest floor, a bad result for Alonso is usually no lower than about 5th, he's got an incredible ability to stick a car on a podium and sometimes it will be by speed, luck, opportunism or reading the race. He's the most rounded talent of any of them, the wily old fox that plays the long game.

Webber on Top Gear, what a legend.

Asked if he's been tempted to ever hit Vettel.

"My dad told me never to hit boys mate."
