The F1 Thread 2013 Season

Button got a lap in, just didn't bother pushing as he knew Vettel and Hulkenberg had given up. How many laps will Lewis do before he has to pit?

Nice to see Merc and Lotus shaking things up. 5 way clash for the title if Mclaren get there shit together.

Di Resta to replace Groj at the end of the season would be nice too

Well that was a fecking weird qualifying.

Wasn't surprised that a Mercedes was on the front row with the Lotus though. Can't believe Mark Webber's luck either. What are the chances you run out of fuel in qualifying. Will be interesting to see if Vettel and Button fair any better on the medium tyre.

Happy Lewis got pole. He needs a good start with Kimi and Alonso breathing down his neck though, I remember a couple of slow starts costing him positions last season. Tomorrow will be all about strategy. Remains to be seen whether the teams who saved tyres will gain a big advantage in the race?

Martin Brundle seemed to think it was a good move. Though Mercedes were quickest on the mediums yesterday I think they'll be the ones to beat.

Softs are up to 1.5 secs quicker than the medium so Lewis and the others will use the extra performance and open a gap between themselves and Vettel, I reckon they're going to do the last 50 laps on the medium which is possible if you stop twice.

trouble is the soft's are only lasting 5-6 laps, or they were in FP , not long enough to open up a big gap.
I see it being a 3 stop race.

What a surprise. Webber expresses dissatisfaction with Red Bull, and his car mysteriously breaks

"Muahahaha"

Now that is the question, I would of thought within 5 maybe.
Pit stops and tyre wear is going to decide this race , not speed.
It really is a joke when it gets the the point where even during qualify we are talking about how best to conserve tyres and that to win, instead of trying to actually race each other

I agree this morning was a joke.
No team really wanted to come out, BBC was even going on about no cars coming out for Q3, and to even talk about that is just daft, when have we seen Red Bull or any of the top teams not trying in Q3.
I can see more team orders wrecking the race again on Sunday.

Happened a few times last season as well. It is clear that the format for qualify is no longer working with the direction that the tyres are going. Perhaps a qualify set of tyres and a race set. That way they can burn through tyres chasing speed, without actually harming their race.

Could be a good idea, but I also like the idea of starting the race on the tyres used in Q3, what I don't like is car that qualify for Q3 and don't even come out.
I do think that something needs to be done, but what, I dont have a clue.

Qualification should be an hour long session with unlimited tyres, that's the best way of making sure the fastest driver gets pole position.

Could always have it you start on the same compound you finished qualifying on. SO do the last lap of qualifying using hard compound, you start the race with new hard tyres from the race allocation.

Single lap qualify is always entertaining, it forces drivers to pull things out of the bag in one go and punishes those that mess up. Though we basically have that now in Q3. Teams are trying to only do one hot lap to save the tyres.

Will be interesting to see how Button and Vettel do on the prime tyres. Still think its Mercedes race to lose though, they were quickest on both the softs and mediums. Both Hamilton and Raikkonen are going to have to watch Alonso starting from third though. His starts are phenomenal.

Yeah Alonso 1st out of Turn 1 wouldn't surprise me too much, although its not a massively long run to it. The Mercedes look nailed here though, they are quick in Sector 2 so they should be able to stick with cars and then take them on the straight if need be as they also have the highest top speed too.

But as always, its the Pirelli lottery so until they get going who knows. I fully expect Vettel to be leading by about Lap 10 as the rest bail from the cheesey softs.

I have a feeling this is going to be a great race. Will see Seb powering up the field and a proper fight between Kimi, Fernando and Lewis.

Hamilton seems alot happier since his move to Merc.

I can see a race decided by pit stops, tyre wear and team orders coming in again.
I am looking forward to see what Red Bull does from the positons they are starting from and if Button has made the right choice of starting rubber.

I'm interested to see the different strategies the teams use today.

Did you see Christian Horner trying to get noticed by Brundle on the pit walk but he just ignored him!
