The F1 Thread 2013 Season

Can't really blame him. Not being paid, he might as well get what ever the problem is fixed and give himself more time to recover and then start testing in his new car next season.

Looks like McLaren might be dumping Perez for Magnussen then, interesting.

Never thought Perez was good enough for a top team, he was lucky with the tyres last season imo.

Conversely with 2013 tyres being even worse for degradation it made sense for McLaren to go for him.

His performances were quite overrated though and I think Perez would've been better served having spent a couple more seasons at a lesser team.

Hopefully Magnussen's actually fast.

Is Hulkenberg going to move anywhere next season? Lotus maybe? And what is Magnussen like as a driver, pretty brave to go for such an inexperienced driver if true.

Well he's been on their young driver programme for a few years now & has shown promise in a few championships and young driver tests for the team. His only inexperience is on the track with the car in a competitive F1 race, he knows the team & knows where they need the feedback to develop the car. The interesting part is that Magnussen comes with no backing, so it's good to see a driver being brought in on driving merit alone.

It's a good move for McLaren & i don't think Perez has actually done that bad a job considering how badly their car has been this year.

I would like to see Hulkenberg at Lotus but I can't see that happening now as Maldonado and possibly Perez are looking for seats. They will bring in more sponsorship money which is something Lotus need.

It's a shame that F1 has so many pay drivers, it should have only the best in the world, not the wealthiest.

Reportedly been quicker than Perez in the simulator too. Risky decision but they needed to throw the dice after the abortion of a season they've just had.

Pretty bad luck for him to go there for the season they built their worst car in 30-odd years. If he's still got sponsor funding he might be able to get back to Sauber, or potentially even Lotus.

I guess we forgot 2009 already? Although to be fair they turned that season around by the end somehow. Wasn't a bad car, it was just mid-grid and he didn't perform, they have all the inside data and analysis to know a driver performance measured, they clearly must not rate him if they are dumping him already despite the considerable sponsorship he brings.

I think on reflection the Sauber of 2012 flattered him, he grabbed a couple of podiums and people assumed it was all him. Kobayashi only finished 6 points behind him in the end, Perez went to complete shit as soon as he was announced as a McLaren driver for the next season. He is still young enough to rebound from it, but I fear he might go the way of Kovalainen.

Nope, the MP4-24 was fully factored in, it got two wins and another three podiums. Last time a McLaren failed to get on a podium was in 1980.

That's a fair point, I did not realise their podium streak has ran that long. The early MP4-24 was a complete dog though, so bad they had to run a 2008 spec rear wing in testing just to get the thing around the track

Yup, was awful, but luckily as the rules were brand new they could throw a lot of shite at the wall and see what stuck. Unfortunately for this year's car, we're at the very end of the current formula so it was doomed to mediocrity... How they managed to get there from having either the fastest or second fastest car last year, I genuinely have no idea! Only McLaren. Must be what it's like being an Arsenal fan.

Yeah this years McLaren had such obvious understeer issues at Round 1 it was incredible to watch, completely evident they threw the baby out with the bathwater for the 2013 car. You know I think they might punt 2014 too, I think their big push now depends on Honda and next year will just end up being a transition holding pattern season.

The second richest man in the world Carlos Slim was a guest at McLaren earlier this year, there was a rumour going around that one of Slim companies would become a major sponsor for team in 2014. I am sure Perez had something to do with it as they're both Mexican.

Amateur hour in free practice, as the session is red flagged after they realised the medical helicopter wasn't there.

Perez performing really well late in the season, think it's quite unlucky for him to be dumped out of McLaren. Those who should be removed should be those at the top, namely Martin Whitmarsh and his goons.

Interesting though that Whitmarsh was the only person Perez had any praise for after his leaving was announced.

Who was that one that they showed smiling at the camera in the garage? One of the drivers is a lucky boy. Actually in fairness they're all lucky bastards

Lewis is proper grumpy  Then again I would be after watching a rocketship pass me around the outside whilst I manage shitty tyres.
