The F1 Thread 2011 Season

What is the value of the BBC F1 contract? Other than that, they could simply cut the whole coverage down, sending a single commentator and have the punditry done by less know well people from a studio in England. Currently they must send around 16+ people to each race. Also, but down on the build up stuff, start the programme with ten minutes to go.

It's not the cost of broadcasting it, its the cost of the rights to broadcast it. They pay something like £40 million a year for the privilege.

They'd have to pay quite a bit to end it as well
I think they'll stick with it, but it's more about trying to pressure the teams (or whoever) in allowing it to be on Sky, as BBC won't be able to bid as much for it, they even suggested in the Times (who owns them btw [/cynicism]) that ITV would have money to bid

I do doubt that with the fact they are committed to the CL and England and FA Cup

F1 bosses agree to compromise on new engine regs - delay by one year to 2014, six-cylinder turbos rather than four. hybrid etc stays

Will be interesting to see how all these changes work out when the time comes.

I mean the ones between qualifying and the race, they believe some of the teams have been using extreme mapping setups and changing them for the race

Does all seem to be a little bit like trying to slow down Red Bull

For our sake it's good I mean unless your a Red Bull fan but either way the Red Bull is still the best aero car out there and I doubt it will change much apart from pull Ferrari closer.

I don't agree with mid-season rule changes, haven't since the dodgy mass damper decision but if they are taking the piss with engine maps and overruns and it effects everyone then I don't have such major issues with this one. Less diffuser based aero should make the cars abit harder to handle and thats always good for the viewer.

The Red Bull will still be planted to the floor anyway.

Going from what Brundle is saying about DRS it's going to be another farce tomorrow. I really don't like that feature.

This track is shit though, DRS will atleast make it half interesting.

That's hard to deny, but I just don't like the artificial nature of it and the way the guy in front is handicapped. This isn't amateur golf, it's the 'pinnacle of motorsport', and as much as we want to see overtaking it shouldn't be generated by devices that give temporary advantages to the trailing car. Just fix the aero regulations properly.

Anyway, tips for P1?

Webber actually getting in the same postcode as Vettel this time. All he has done is made the start less interesting though, Hamilton alongside Vettel could have been good, now we will get Webber just slotting in if the start goes to plan.

will the fact Red Bull have no new soft tyres make any difference to them

Not really, I expect McLaren to be more on the pace in the race because they seem to lose alot in the last sector over a single lap which is prime Red Bull DRS territory. If the pace of the cars plays out like the previous few then McLaren will be quick but stuck in traffic whilst Vettel pulls a decent lead to then control the race.

Barring a safety car, Webber holds the key for this race. If Hamilton can jump him early then its on, if Webber gets in front its on, if Webber holds second Vettel will romp it.
