The F1 Thread 2011 Season

Great end to that race
The safety car was out too long after the long pause

Brilliant drive from Jenson, and shouldn't be punished for either incident to my mind
And he would have taken Vettel with DRS imo regardless of his error

What is a joke with DRS is that once you have passed you can still use it if you are in the zone.

i.e the second DRS zone, or when activation points have been before corners rather than after as was today

Yeah, that seemed a bit silly to me. Has it happened before, or just this track?

This has been the first double zone, but there have been other ones where the detection point is before a corner, then someone gets overtaken in the corner and then uses DRS to fly away from them on the straight

Not sure how intelligent they can make the system with DRS

I don't think the two zone DRS worked and wouldn't be suprised to not see it again after Valencia.

Being confirmed on Twitter that no penalty for Alonso incident and that Button keeps his win

Sense is prevailing.

Must say the standard of stewarding since the introduction of the driver reps and Todt coming into the FIA has been really good.

These are the days that make me love Schumi more! :D I don't care about wins and podiums, if he goes out and does something like that! It was a Michael Schumacher drive. Still the regenmeister at 42!

Never been a fan of him to be honest , for me he made F1 boring but his race yesterday was fantastic , with a few tweaks to his car he would be up there all the time.
That race was one of the best I have seen and for Button to go from last to first and have a drive though and 6 pit stops was a cracking drive , yes he won because Vettel fecked up near the end , but for Button even be there and force Vettel in to the mistake was excellent.

I used to watch almost every race.

Now I don't even know if there is a race and am even least bothered about the results.

F1 has become so boring?

Not sure if you changed your tune after yesterday's race because I can't be arsed to read through all the pages but boy oh boy are you wrong!

F1 isn't boring but the race for the title certainly is.

Thats the point I was trying to make actually.

Anyways what a fecking race this was!

One of the best I have seen for sure. Great fun.

Just loved the atmosphere and all near the grand stands, dressing rooms etc.

I was pretty convinced that Button would have had him in the last corner anyway with the DRS.

Was a fantastic race and one of the best drives i've seen from Button. Jeez that was some eventful race for him considering he had accidents with Hamilton and Alonso.

To think I almost put £10 on him before the weekend started! Argh.

Don't count :p

disappointed that they havent got it on the iplayer yet, they had part one up there but it has been taken down now:(

I was thinking when I started reading that article that even in spite of his recent mood and the comments he's made about the team I just can't see him leaving McLaren. Then I read the bit about him now being managed by Simon Fuller, which I'd forgotten, and now I wouldn't be surprised whatever he does.

I did say a bit ago I could see Lewis leaving McLaren , but now I not so sure.
Vettel is not going to leave Red Bull and I dont think Webber will and they are the 2 top teams right now.
I do think that a Vettel/Hamilton team for Red Bull would be very hard to beat.
Could a Hamilton for Webber swap be in the pipe line.

Might be the only brand in the world that pays to sponsor a team and only gets implied sponsorship.

It probably brings them more attention than the sponsors which have the logo's on the car. Everyone knows Ferrari are sponsored by Marlboro because of the the barcode thing they had, which attracted controversy making it more memorable. And when McLaren had West sponsoring them and had to write the drivers name on the side of the car instead of the West logo (e.g Kimi/Mika) that also attracted more attention than simply having a sponsors name on. I know I've said it in a roundabout way, but I think its actually very smart

Alonso in a Red Bull please. That Ferrari wastes half a season getting up to speed

It brings them attention to people that already know it, plus the new Ferrari F1 logo is basically a tobacco ad in itself. I don't think its necessarily smart, its just a compromise for tobacco advertising in the sport.

R_Nick far as I know Santander pays for Alonso wages, or atleast a large amount of them. Alonso signed a new contract to stay at Ferrari until the end of 2016, I think barring a major fallout (and we know he is capable of those) he will end his career there.

Ah yes, I forgot about the Santander deal (I'm forgetting a lot recently, think I'm getting old) that makes sense. I remember reading that Raikkonen's monster wages were paid by PMI, not sure how accurate that was though.

Santander really do have F1 advertising nailed down, in their Spanish branches they have Alonso and Ferrari plastered all over the place (probably Italy too) and here in the UK it's McLaren and Hamilton/Button.

Yeah between Santander & Vodafone they have both become iconic F1 sponsors now, been around long enough and had their sponsors plasted over title winning machines.

Oh yeah forgot to mention, Hamilton swaps rides with Tony Stewart today at Watkins Glen.

If Hamilton did go to Red Bull, it would be in place of Webber. The Australian will not be drawn on the apparent disconnect between his words in Montreal and Horner's but many believe he will leave the team at the end of the year - either into retirement or to another team for one last hurrah.

That team could be Ferrari, where Felipe Massa's future is in question. The Brazilian has a contract for 2012 but he is an inconsistent performer. He is pretty close to Alonso at some races but nowhere near at others.

If Ferrari got rid of Massa and then brought in Mark fecking Webber it would prove beyond any final doubt that the management there has gone to shit.

Part of this Senna movie is a load of bollocks. They could have atleast given the point that Senna was not put on the dirty side of the track in 1990 after he got pole. Traditionally at the time the Japanese gp pole was always on the inside of the track.

Before qualifying for the 1990 race had even begun, Senna lobbied track officials for pole position to be moved to the left and onto the racing line. He believed he’d got their consent – but after claiming pole position he was told he would start from the right-hand side of the track once again.

He wanted it moved and thought he got his way but yeah that part was a bit twisted. The one thing I didn't like about the movie is they tried to make out Prost to be some kind of villan where as in reality he just knew how to play the politics and knew he could get to Senna by doing it.

I don't think you can go into it thinking anything other then it will hold Senna in the highest regard. It's basically a massive fan made doco. But as you said, it would be nice to see some objectivity in certain aspects that were not as one sided as the movie made people to believe.
While the Senna, Prost rivalry was massive at the time, they should have focused more on Senna himself rather than trying to play the good v bad thing.

Yeah thats the one thing they didn't do correct, show that Senna wasn't always the hero. He was a hothead and went for gaps that sometimes didn't exist but without that he wouldn't have been as great as he was. I have little doubt that should Senna be racing today in the internet era he would be more loved and even more hated by fans.

Strong rumours emerging that the BBC will drop F1 coverage as early as the end of this season to save money. Must be some truth to it given that even Bernie has commented on it.

Read this in The Sun this morning funny how Rupert Murdoch and News Corp admit they want to buy F1 then these stories start to appear in only his papers (The Times/The Sun). The BBC have to save 60 mil F1 will be at risk but no more then anything else right now all Radio/Tv is up for the cut.
