The F1 Thread 2011 Season

True (probably) but the rules are pre-set, they've not just made that call now.

Obviously not but to me unless the track conditions change I don't think any changes should be allowed. Vettel has won this one through some fortunate circumstances, abit like Hamilton in 08.

Season is over pretty soon, barring a miracle bottle job.

We don't know that his tyres would have fallen off. McLaren suggested so but Red Bull kept him on them so they obviously didn't think they would. If Hamilton had had Vettel's race this place would be lauding his fantastic drive under huge pressure from Massa and Button, but as it is Vettel is just lucky.

Nah, credit has to be given where it's due, I love Vettel but this is slightly BS, he made the decision to stay out, he decided he could defend on his tires, now he gets to change them free as he was about to have them drop off.

Bollocks mate, he has had a huge slice of luck this race doesn't matter that its Vettel, if it was Glock it would have been lucky. He has done very well to last on those tyres ofcourse but come on he was hanging on at the end there. The race was Button's before the first SC, potentially any of Alonso, Vettel and Button afterwards.

Make your own luck I guess.

Yeah and if Hamitlon got the new tyres and if he was dominating like Seb you would be saying what most are saying Vettel.

Massa gets to change his too and he was the one who'd shown signs of getting ragged. Vettel has put in a great drive to hold them off for so long on such old tyres but all the haters on here just brand him lucky.

It is luck though Nick, I think you're seeing it as haters just because it usually is. I'm no hater, Vettel is my 2nd favourite driver but at the end of the day he's got lucky today. He hasn't 'held' Button off, Button stormed through and demolished a 16 second lead to get to him, Alonso has probed him twice and almost got through, his tires are almost dead after his own decision that he could last the race on them, the first safety car messed Button up which was massively lucky for Vettel to get anywhere close to 1st again, then just as Vettel was close to losing his lead it ends up out again to save him. Then restarting the race on cold dead tires would have been bad for him but another stroke of luck gives him a brand spanking new set after he decided that he wanted to stay out on his old ones and take his chances.

How well he has driven doesn't come close to how well Button has driven, if the 1st SC hadn't come out then Button would still be P1 and he wouldn't even be talking about Vettel and how good he's been, then the safety car killed it as it was getting to the climax.

Of course he held them off, they were still behind him despite being faster, that's what holding off is. It's pure guess work to say he was about to lose his tyres, he and his team clearly thought they could make it.

Can I just point out despite Webber making moves and his own fumbled pitstop, what a terrible waste of a fast car it is.

That one finger celebration, I want to snap that fecking finger

Hamilton can whine and cry about his team but he's a bit of an idiot himself.

He was behind him because he had a 16 second gap to demolish... he didn't hold him off as much as wait for him to catch up.

It's not guess work to say he was going to lose them, it's more guess work to say he wasn't going to lose them. Him and his team may have thought they could make it, they might of even thought he couldn't make it but throwing dice desparately, but everybody else in F1 kept talking about him losing them.

If the safety cars hadn't come out, Vettel would not be first, therefore he's had massive luck. He'd be 20 seconds behind Button and having to pit because there'd be no point in staying out on dead tires 20 seconds behind 1st.

Senna - 'And if you no longer go for a gap that exists, you are no longer a racing driver'

Hamilton went for gaps that didn't exist today.

Of course it is mate!! McLaren told Jenson they expect it to happen and so Brundle took it as fact and that's it. We'll never know either way, but one thing we do know for definite is that he put in a fantastic drive to stay out on those tyres for that long and stay in front.

The safety car issue is different, he definitely got fortunate there, but by the same token he would have been pitting to put super softs on and Jenson would have been going on to the soft, so who's to say he wouldn't have caught back up? We'll never know, but track position is what counts and Vettel made be most of his when it mattered, whereas McLaren fecked up bringing button in.

It was lucky, there can be no doubt about it
But as you say, he did drive really well to hold the lead

I suspect they may change the rules for future rare situations when this happens again, and tyres won't be allowed to be changed unless the weather changes....and maybe they won't let them work on the car unless the weather changes

The fact that you can change tyres under the red flag condition effectively robbed the viewer of a compelling finish to this race.

I was refering to the last incident with Maldonado, gap was there it was up to him if he wanted to have that accident or not.

Overall though poor from Hamilton all race, lost his head.
