The Europa League 2017/18(Use the SF thread to discuss the current match)

They got Samuel on the cheap from Viking as well, love seeing Viking getting fleeced but dislike Rosenborg getting a deal.

What a mistake by the FH keeper. FH have been piling on pressure but the goalkeeper just gave it away just now out of nowhere. Some very costly goals in this tie.

Arsenal
Milan
Bilbao
Villareal
Marseille
Lyon

Plus some big teams who will get knocked out from the Champions League. These are favourites, imo.

Donno why everyone considers it a second rate competition, it has some really good teams in it.

Just seen Sigurdsson goal. Imagine starting your career with a new team with such a great goal.

Everton, Austria Wien and Red Star are the last teams to qualify.

Hopefully we get Austria Wien so i can go there and see Arsenal live :D

Boedvar Boedvarsson.

Well it's fair to say his parents haven't been too creative.
No different to George Bush or Javier Hernandez who both have fathers with the same name. Usually when people in Iceland when men have the same name as their dad it's because they are named after their grandfather, a tradition basically. I just checked Böðvar and I'm correct. At least the 6 generations above him are also named Böðvar Böðvarsson.

Both Partizan and Red Star in EL...not sure even how, think that never happened before. Red Star after 10 years back in group phase of EL.

Yeah figured as much, Boedvar Boedvarsson sounds funnier though.

Plenty of shocks in the Europa League tonight. Legia, PAOK, Fenerbahce, Dinamo Zagreb, Ajax and FC Krasnodar all fail to qualify for the group stages.

Fenerbahce by far the biggest shock IMO. What an absolute embarrassment for them.

As an AC Milan supporter I'd like to avoid Everton and the french teams in pot 2 and Hoffenheim in pot 3.

No, how are we going to enjoy your meltdown then, if you are at stadium?:wenger:
I don't understand one thing. Why do you in split booing your players? He missed pen. Big deal.
It is not about missing penalty, it is about how he stole the ball to do it, and later on behaved like little prick primadonna. It could have been turning point,...probably not, but hope and all that.

You're better than us. :)

Na, highly doubt it. Wouldnt be surprised if Rijeka does better then Red Star and Partizan combined :). Looking up on that table, wondering how stupid this UEFA coen. can be, Partizan think did feck all last 5 years (even tho i stopped following Serbian football long time ago) and yet they are so close from being in pot 2 what the feck.

Keep an eye out for Real Sociedad (Spain) if you get them in the group, they tend to play well in the first half of the season.

We've inflicted some irreversible damage upon Ajax.
Nah, that's what our new coach (and the old staff that was against Bosz) has done. How to ruin a season before the end of August. That's truly remarkable.

I think English clubs might really start taking this competition seriously since us winning it last year. I personally wasn't aware of how valuable it could be, but it not only saved last season for us, it also layed the foundation for this season.

So many upsides yet it's been treated like a Mickey Mouse trophy for so long. I predict a shift in domination of this competition from Spanish to English clubs in the next years.

It's easier said than done. EL took huge toll on the squad during the season. The Thursday schedule leaves much to be desired when it comes to league games. Anything can happen in Cup games so you can't simply afford to put all egg in EL basket from the get go. So you need squad depth and sufficient quality. EL quality may suit for quite few PL top teams to win it, but it carries more unexpectedly uncomfortable obstacles along the way. I meant let's not forget from time to time, quality teams got relegated to EL at latter stage of the campaign.

I agree with most of your points, but we're in a league where at least 6 clubs have CL ambitions every year, this could easily turn into 7 or 8 in the next few years. Especially for borderline clubs the EL will turn into the most realistic gateway to entry.

Quality squad depth will be an issue that all challenging clubs will need to address much sooner rather than later. I think it'll clearly make the difference between those that make it and those that don't. Liverpool being a great example of poor depth that'll catch up with them very soon.

I don't disagree, but just want to clarify my point further. It's hard to add depth for team playing EL. I meant top teams with sufficient pulling power from the get go like us last season doesn't happen too often. As compelling as PL is, the pulling power of CL football from clubs like Monaco, Dortmund, Napoli, AS Roma... (when they come calling) would be more than good enough to attract squad players than joining Southampton, Everton... playing in EL.

Given how PL gets extra non-verbal tax for transfer, it's just adding to the difficulty. PL clubs may spend huge amount of money, but for quite few cases, they don't actually improve with those signings in depth and quality from previous seasons.
