Music The Cure

They were fecking awesome live. His voice still sounds great.

The intro to “Pictures of You” appears quite short by comparison. “Alone” is the song with which the Cure opened their concerts on their tour a couple of years ago. Great to hear the studio version at last. Also looking forward to hearing the recorded version of “The End” when they release their album in November.

It's crazy how much his voice hasn't changed with age. And that's true of him live too.

What's everyone's favourite songs/albums of The Cure?

Apart from Seventeen Seconds I've never really listened to full albums of theirs, just random songs from different ones. Earlier though I listened to Three Imaginary Boys which was great. Really liked all of it. 10.15 Saturday Night is a great opening track.

Favourite song overall would probably be A Forest. Love the moody atmosphere of it.

I would also pick Three Imaginary Boys (or better still, Boys Don't Cry, which is basically TIB with some more good songs added). Other than that, Japanese Whispers and Kiss Me, Kiss Me, Kiss me, which - probably not coincidentally - were the albums that first got me into them.

And you're right about A Forest.

They were at the BBC yesterday.
Played to 500 last night it'll be shown this Saturday night on BBC.
Glad I got to see them at the 3 arena Dublin nearly two years ago now. His voice never regressed and given his age. The single most thing I love about them is they never kind of went off to America to 'reinvent' themselves. They remained true to themselves.

There's a twenty minute segment of Robert's radio interview with Simon Huw from yesterday on YouTube. Obviously with the new album upcoming. It's no secret he lost immediate and close family in the pandemic so some of the songs are going to be raw. Let's face it we all went through it during that period.

Have to say they were brilliant when I did go to see them and the small not overloaded sections of merchandise tucked down the back no more than EU15 per t-shirt. Two and a half hours of solid gold and he was surprisingly in good form.

Anyway the interview, audio and snippets on YouTube and across social media platforms and the concert from last night this Saturday night BBC in or around 9-10pm.

Obviously anyone can watch it on YouTube instead of waiting till tomorrow. The Cure live at the BBC. First song up is "Alone'. Intimate for sure with say 500 or so. Phones still up in the air can only speak for myself but if I was there a few photos yes but I'd be in the moment and could very well do without it. Anyway enjoy the set folks.

Thoughts on the album?

It’s not Disintegration level but it has a beautiful elegiac feel with its songs of ageing and loss. 8/10.

It's really good. Their best since Disintegration I'd say and that's a terrifyingly long time ago now.

There's a whole evening on the BBC tomorrow evening from 8pm right through till 3am.Quite apt as Robert being the nocturnal creature.
Heard at least 2 songs off the new album back in 2022 in Dublin. Think the whole live thing turning point was Hyde Park in 2018 he particularly loves playing now more so than he ever did.

Just finished, that was a great listen, a prime example of not releasing anything until you've got something worth saying.

Superb.

It's insane how young his voice still sounds.

I think this is their best album since Wish, an album I adore.

Am watching it at the moment - he does sound spot on.

I did like Wish bar a few songs like High. Cut was amazing live saw it on a bootleg gig video when it was called Away.

Anyway back to it.

It’s absolutely brilliant - the opening two tracks, wow. Actually got a little emotional listening to them which is fairly rare for me with music these days.

Heard this one for the first time at the 3Arena Dublin and yes I'd be a hard man to break at times but this song well it nearly had me. His voice that night was unbelievable. Class personified, tickets and merchandise affordable and money left for food and drink.
Played for over two and a half hours. 3 songs off this album and the rest obviously the ones we all know.
Coming out of the gig was thinking about 20 more that didn't get played.
Needless to say if they're back again definitely will be there.
Obviously 'Nothing is Forever' can resonate with anyone but think he wrote it after the passing of his brother.
