The comprehensive Ronaldo thread

Is he really going to where himself out by going to Saudi arabia?

What a sad fecking end for such a illustrious career.

All his antics up to this point and his physical decline were definitely sad to watch. But signing a contract worth half a billion at 38 is definitely not part of that. MLS, China, Saudi Arabia, all the same. But the money is not.

The thing is I really don't believe the quoted number, surely they not daft enough to offer him that much , it just doesn't make sense.

If it turns out to be true, good luck to him I guess, he'll die as a wealthy man if he wasn't going to already.

Im just glad its been finally proven that he isnt good enough anymore. Just one fluke goal or even a half decent performance and the Ronaldo fan boys would be out saying that it wasn't his fault and he would get 50 goals if it wasn't for x, y, z and its Ten Haags fault and on and on. Sit down fan boys. Your boy took one hell of a beating.

I'm happy he is gone from United and that Morocco are through. However I can't not feel something when I see him cry after his last WC game ever. I think as fans, it's healthier not to just be about hatred when it comes to all things Ronaldo related basically.

I agree with you. He has burnt his bridges and gone. I am glad that Portugal is out simply because of his antics. But I get no pleasure in seeing any player like that. No matter what, he has played very well for us until this season and see no need to dance on his grave. I am more upset with Bruno due to his post match views. At least Ronaldo didn't say anything like that.

Ok, first no serious club will given him a contract now on current terms. He is done at highest level, doesn’t mean he can’t score goals but again these days he will not fit in any of the top club system as a regular

He has two choices and it all depends on what he wants…

1) Go to Saudi for 3 years, make 500m and be the first footballer to be worth 1B (doubt anyone is a billionaire while still playing, ignore the prince)….. And he can brag about it as I am sure it will satisfy his big ego..

2) Be like a Zlatan and accept a part time role and salary package like him that is based on Low base salary (2m, yeah Low I know) and rest on goals and bonuses….
I am sure this will work for few CL clubs

One thing is a given, he is done at highest level. He had an amazing career and doubt many will come close to him but all things eventually comes to an end. He just needs to accept it gracefully.

Would have loved if he did a Zlatan and accepted anrole as an impact sub. Still pop up with the occasional goal or brace. Maybe even go tona smaller club and still remain a starter like some of the greats of former generations did. Remember how cool it was when van Nistelroy and Raul suddenly played in Germany. Really sad that this doesn't seem like a possibility.

Yeah, it's not nice to see him so tearful about the result, all the niggles aside. But hopefully this is the last time we have any major threads on him. Not at Utd, not at the World Cup, time to move on.

Apparently teams didn’t even want him at £80k a week. Kompany joked that he wouldn’t have him at Burnley because he needs players that can run. He might have only been half serious but it’s true.

Also the circus around Ronaldo at United has been ridiculous and pathetic since he’s arrived this time. When he’s dropped the camera goes to the bench. The manager asked why he was dropped, even when he played terrible. Influencers going to games demanding to see Ronaldo. Ronaldo attention seeking to make headlines again and again and media doing everything to publish those stories for clicks and sales. Meanwhile he’s acting like an individual in a team and thinking he’s above certain tasks.

If you had a strong team ethic, it would be a massive risk to take Ronaldo on at his current state, even for a mid-table team.

officially finished..

glad to see the world finally realized his toxic personality, limited abilities at the end.. unwanted even in his home county & at United, the club that made him..
not even able to finish tap-ins now... good luck in saudi arabia))

He's had a very tough year, but his fall this year professionally has been monumental

It really has. I wasn’t totally enamoured by his general play last season but he doesn’t even look like a footballer now.

Most objective take/thread I've seen on where he stands right now heading in 2023.

He's very much at a crossroads in his career

Didn't Ten Hag say yesterday that Ronaldo wanted to stay? Not a fan of how Ronaldo has acted this season but it feels like these journalists are just making stuff up at this point. The wildest story was that Ronaldo was going to walk out of the Portugal squad and miss the chance to win his last ever WC because he got benched for one game.

TBF Ronaldo cant be blamed for being injured in the euro final. He helped get them there. Of course he made it all about him by playing coach on the sidelines.

He would never have wanted to stay when he did that interview. That was to burn all bridges.

A legend of the game. His last year was too much drama. The media played a big part in it, but he also did not help. Too much drama

It is so strange, he look like he is in peak condition but when he plays, he gets tired so easily. I remember one match for us that he gotten so tired at 70 odd minute that he couldn't even trap the ball. Not sure if it because he packed too much muscles which compromised some of his other aspect. I know it is not the same position but I see Modric who is the same age still run as fast and doesn't get so tired easily. Likewise for Giggs who played well to his 40s.

Straight down the tunnel as usual. Leaving the rest of the team to face the music. Some captain.

I see it a bit differently. The final whistle was blown on a part of his life there. To be clear I never liked him, but in this case I'm empathetic towards him in that moment because time eventually comes for us all.

He has played about 200 games more than Modric so far in his career and they all have been at the highest level. Giggs kept going for a long time but Fergie rotated him a lot which must have helped his longevity. Like Modric, he has also played less football overall than Ronaldo.

wow didn't realize that. 200 games is a lot. Guess no amount of training that undo the tolls that it takes on your body.

They wouldn't even be in the KO stages if it wasn't for UEFA changing the rules.

Modric sort of ambles along slowly but smartly, always moving and slowing the game down to his pace with the ball. Ronaldo is reliant on bursts of energy to make space for a shot. That explosiveness is harder to keep. There’s a reason there’s basically never been world class strikers in history in their late 30s.

Yes he scored 3 goals and produced 3 assists en-route to the final. Pepe was clearly Portugal’s best player at that tournament, as Ronaldo basically admitted by saying that he deserved the player of the tournament award, but Ronaldo definitely made a big contribution as well.

To be honest, I’m not convinced that Portugal would even have qualified for all of the last 5 World Cups without him as well.

The best / most talented Portugal teams I’ve seen, both on paper and in reality, were at Euro 2000 pre-Ronaldo, when he was 19-21, and certainly in terms of strength in depth when he has been in his mid to late 30s. I don’t think Portugal had particular strong, stacked teams during his lengthy prime years.

This team and the Euro 2021 team were very strong on paper.

I really don't get why he burnt the United bridge.

This is a club where a section of the fanbase adored him like a deity. Even when he was at Madrid.

Imagine if he had just remained quiet as a squad player. With a team that is looking to rebuild. He's seen as one of the experienced leaders to help in that rebuild and plays less games but contributes when called upon.

Then when he retires, United throw him a glorius sendoff similar to a Giggs/Ferguson. Then he gets an ambassadorial role and rides off into the sunset.

He just put unnecessary pressure on himself at this world cup instead.

Yep definitely stronger on paper than any Portugal team from Euro 2008 - World Cup 2018 when Ronaldo was 23-33 IMO, and at least rivalling their Euro 2004 - World Cup teams when he was 19-21.

I’d rank Portugal’s Euro 2000 team ahead of any of their later teams with a prime (or pre-prime) Ronaldo in them. They were excellent to watch at that tournament (still the best international tournament I’ve ever seen bar none).

For quite a while under Quieroz, Bento and the first few years under Santos, I didn’t rate Portugal that highly. Ronaldo was brilliant at Euro 2012 and definitely was a major driving force in their SF run at that tournament.

Wasn’t Ronaldo’s three assists at Euro 2016, one from a shot he missed that was parried to another player and another from another missed shot that was knocked in? They were hardly like Messi’s assist for Molina against Netherlands. Some places only give Ronaldo two assists as they don’t count a missed shot finished by someone else as an assist.

What is this obsession with trying to downplay Ronaldo's contribution the whole time.
I saw someone on another thread trying to say he didn't have many "memorable" moments with us first time round (despite then listing about 10 himself).

I'm half expecting someone to say those 400-500 goals in Spain were all against the likes of a Moyes United team next

It's just because every time Euro 2016 comes up and anyone doubts how great he was in it, the 3 assists is doled out to top any argument in favour to make it sound like he was some sort of creativity king, when two of them are shots he missed. The first one was a quality pass to be fair.

Aye, it’s gone fecking nuts now.

Soon Madrid would’ve won all those CL without him, proved by their CL win when he left.

Give it another few months and I swear you’d think posters were talking about Luke Chadwick.
