The chase for 4th place (not top 4)

Feels like Arsenal are always playing teams out of form but that might just be my bias.

I'm there too. Maybe it's team underestimate them, like I probably do, and it's always fun for teams to beat United, even if we're shite.

Not giving up right now. We do our bit, we’ll finish in the top 4. Expect Arsenal to drop 12-15 points at least. We have to win at least 7 of our 9. Our fixture against them could be crucial.

Thought Arsenal looked pretty good today - certainly much more cohesive than us. Can’t see us overtaking them now.

Arsenal have had a decent run of fixtures and have taken full advantage of it. Still don't think they are anything special because they still cant take any points from the top teams like Liverpool midweek. They'll proberly drop points to Spurs and Chelsea when they play them too.

Its just the fact that we are incapable of puttings a string of wins together againist anyone this season that is going to cost us. You just cannot not drop point against Watford, Burney, Villa, Southampton, Wolves, Leicester, Newcastle and Everton at the start of season.
The list is endless if you look at it.

We just do not desere to be anywhere near the Champions League next season. The fact that we are still in with a faint chance is a miracle.
Those teams you’ve listed, you just expect Arsenal to beat them with the minimal level of fuss these days. I wouldn’t trust United to beat any of them mind. That’s the difference.

It would be typical modern United to beat Arsenal at the Emirates but still finish outside the top 4.

I'd be amazed if Spurs don't finish above you tbh. They've got aways against us (we will get zero points again given how tepid we are against anyone in top 8) Norwich on last day who'll be long down and Brentford which is winnable and plenty of decent home games, think they'll beat West Ham tomorrow aswell given Kane is back in form.

Arsenal 4th, Spurs 5th and Man. United 6th feels most logical outcome.

The damage has been already done against smaller teams no way we are winning almost all of our games looking at our current form.
It's more plausible that we make a fool of ourselves in the remaining features, than mounting a real challenge.
Or knowing how this season if going we will somehow be in 4th on the last day and only need to win. Then we bottle it and throw it away on the final day.

Thats insanely optimistic and not happening. Arsenal look well organized at the back now and are beating team they’re supposed to beat. We had our chance to even challenge Chelsea for 3rd but blew it. We’re likely finishing 6th.

It is optimistic. Unfortunately the optimistic part has less to do with our opponents and more to do with our own form.

This just underscores what a complete shambles we are on all levels on and off the pitch under these parsitic owners.

I am fully aware about the unpopularity of the Glazers. However, I don't think their "parasitic" behavior is the reason of United struggles. Focusing on the owners is actually preventing you to address the clubs real problems.
At the end it doesn't matter for the players or silverware, whether the club is debt free, got 50 millions of 500 millions £ of debt. Barcelona or Real Madrid are still successful despite being heavily indebted for many years

After all Man United's investments into the team is only second to Man City. The Glazer's definitely haven't been cheapskates when it comes to pouring money into the team.

Your problems aren't missing investment but the lack of a long-term vision and philosophy how Man United should play. Going for big name players regardless whether they fit into the team or not. Hiring coaches with complete different often opposite playing philosophies, which not only prevented any consistency and development of a playing identity but left you with a squad of players that doesn't really suit any game style.
Hearing your ex players like Keane, Scholes or Rio to recommend hiring Simone as the new coach makes me cringe. Not only would the football be the total opposite of the Man United way under Ferguson but you also don't have the players who would thrive under Simone.

In short the Glazer's taking money out of the club is surely one of your lesser issues.

This can't be real, right? They can't be serious, right?

That's what they were talking after the CL exit.
According to Scholes the coach made the difference. Keane promotes Simone for a while and Rio is joining his views.

Wasn't Rio not also the guy who pressured United to give Ole a blank contract immediately after winning in Paris against PSG?

It shouldn’t of even got to this stage, we’ve been awful but arsenal was worse at the beginning of the season. Our board have cost us yet again. They hanged on to ole for to long when everyone was shouting for him to be gone. He was getting loss after loss and costing us points yet nothing was done! We could of saved some points at least by acting faster. We must be bad if arsenal are finishing above us, there squads not even on the same level as ours, yet they look miles better and there playing in an actual system. They look well organised and coached, that’s what the difference is.

Even if
  • Arsenal lose their game in hand
  • we manage to hit our points per game from last season (1.95) for the last games
  • Arsenal hits their ppg from last season (1.61) for the last games
Linear algebra tells us we won't catch them:

If I were a betting man, I'd bet on them coming 4th. And before anybody complains about stats only telling half the story; if they manage to press us as high and intense as they pressed in the first half yesterday, I doubt that our defence will be able to cope.

I realise sometimes it is the most undeserving in life who are rewarded but never to that extent.

We don’t deserve top 4. But I would rather we get it than not. It’ll be easier to rebuild if we are playing in champions league. Good players prefer playing in it than not.
It's not happening whether we want it or not

The players like us fans will know it's over. They didn't give a shit anyway, they will give even less now.

What's our lowest Premier League finish? 7th under Moyes? Think we might better that this season. What a mess.

The Glazers control the board and allowed a banker to run the club, hence the lack of vision. The Glazers will always prioritize making money rather than winning titles. Our scouting has been abmysal and that is probably the main reason for missing out on top 4. Ralf couldnt make a difference with this lot.

4 wins from 10 games left woukd take us to 66 points. So maybe a couple of draws or a 5th win to take us to 68 / 69 points would seal it I reckon.

You can call the Glazers incompetent but not parasitic. They spent an awful lot of money, just not wisely.

More dropped points for United

Are they still in the hunt for top four?

Most of this forum have been saying no for weeks. Man. United just don't have the quality tbh and have had feel of 6th/7th team for most of the season.

They won't get to even 65 points imo so no chance of finishing above Arsenal or Spurs with that points haul and one of Wolves/West Ham could yet push them down another place.

Feck me we are shite.Next season can't come soon enough.

Were is the passion, the aggression in this Man Utd team? I m sure Pogba is more upset when he loses a Fifa game

Mathematically it is still doable for the 4th place trophy.
But realistically about as probable as for any of us to win a lottery jackpot (which, albeit, is also mathematically doable)? :)

The difference is the players still have 8 games to play to entertain the fans who paid the tickets. They need to have something to play for to have the intensity in the games. It is still doable until it is officially over.

Realistically, the battle for top 4 is between Arsenal and Spurs. In any event, Arsenal have to lose both their matches against Spurs and United both of whom must win all their remaining matches to be in real contention. Tall call.

I'd be surprised if we won half our remaining matches, let alone all of them.

Hello again Europa league. After a summer of signing Varane, Sancho and Ronaldo, too. What a ridiculous club we are.

4th is gone for Utd. Down to Spurs and Lé Arse.

Now everyone has caught up with what was obvious for a couple of months and realised we won't get it, do we think we'll finish 6th (Europa), 7th (Conference) or 8th (nothing)?

I think 6th is a long shot.

Hopefully 8th.
