The Casemiro/Mount/Bruno midfield

I don't know what Ten Hag has seen to think Casemiro needs less physical support alongside him. He's well past his best and we get easily bullied.

It made no sense to begin with. There is not a single player in their capable of controlling the tempo of the game and we are currently getting ripped apart from Wolves so that bodes very well for the big games.

Said it when we signed him but spending £60M on Mount makes no sense.

Same. Too early to panic but if anyone was expecting something different then they are deluded. We didn't need a better Eriksen. We needed a totally different version of a midfielder.
Pretty much, I'm still holding out hope that Eric will make it work because we neither have the cash nor a suitable candidate to throw money at.

He's also been given the no7 shirt, he was brought in as a starter in mind.

You are not winning anything that matters with a midfield that can't control games.

This is not a midfield that controls games.

I don't think it will be a regular lineup - EtH probably expected Wolves to be a lot more passive (and they probably would have been under Lopetegui). Against any decent opposition, we'd play two midfielders behind the #10, with Mount probably either on the bench or out wide.

One of our three priority positions to strengthen this summer should have been #8 and I'm still hoping we'll sign one (we also still need a backup #6).

I said last season Casemiro should have been replaced and phased out before it started showing.

Early days but Mount looks like a passenger, in preseason and tonight, along with Antony we could be seeing another questionable signing.

It might work with a solitary striker, ala Hoijlund, if we dominate possession. Or even with an additional winger, but not with 3 forwards since in that case you really only have Casemiro in midfield on his own.

Impressed with Mount for him a first showing. Casemiro and Bruno have been terrible tonight. Of course one game together is way too early to judge. Have left massive holes in the middle which will need addressing straight away though.

I don’t think Antony or Garnacho are good enough or tactically disciplined enough to compensate for how attacking Bruno and Mount are.

We don't do proactive squad planning. We will wait until Casemiro is on his last legs with little to offer before even thinking about a long-term replacement.

We really had the gall to think we could play a 31 year old defensive midfielder and two no.10s in the Premier League and make it work. None of whom can actually play under the press either

But what do we armchair posters know

Two high pressing 8/10's who aren't great at retaining possession, anchored by an ageing Casemiro. What could go wrong?

This midfield experiment won’t last long.

Mount is going to go in the Antony bracket of money wastes

Yep, it is clear already now. He is not a winger, not an 8 and not better than Bruno. So bench. Said so a month ago.

Now there is no plan B for him, as he is useless with his skill set

Casemiro is done unfortunately, legs look gone. Need replacement as soon as possible. That's really the only problem with the midfield.

Blind man could have told you it would mostly be shite. But back the manager and all that.

Never gonna work. Casemiro has to do the defensive work all on his own. Bruno seems to disappear, mount is bang average

It doesn't work. Mount should be a sub for Bruno at best.

Don’t know if Case is injured but he was moving like a sloth. Awful

£60m wasted on Mount when we should have been buying a powerful centre midfielder with consistent passing.

That is why the right manager matters. I have no idea why ETH would think mount is the type of player we need in our midfield. At Chelsea he played as a ram. It is like arteta with havertz. I do not understand what both eth and arteta are doing. We can see what Chelsea, Liverpool, Brighton, Newcastle and city are doing. We are the outliers in this group. But he may prove me wrong and mount does exceptional well in this 8 role.

Well he just got substituted as I wrote this:nervous:
Your idol want to keep Mount, so come off it

Bruno and Mount's positioning is shocking. There's acres of space behind them yet we insist on having 5 attackers push up as high as possible, leaving huge gaps on the counter.
And yet they hardly see a ball since we have nobone supporting our build up

Yeah.. the midfield is the problem. I will give it some time.. but it didn't look great in preseason and now it's looked crap in the real games too.

Mount is gonna be an expensive backup to Bruno. The sooner we sign Amrabat to give us a bit of balance in the midfield, the better.
