Television The Caf' Anime Thread

I finally caught up with AOT final season and watched the 15th episode. Dare I say, the CGI in episode 14 was terrible and ruined a moment that could have been legendary if done right. Weird, I didn't have a problem with the CGI in the big fight in episodes 5-8 but in episode 14 particularly it was godawful. Unfortunately it's bound to affect my rating of this season.

Story is starting to become a little bit convoluted with how much information thrown at you every episode then a sudden twist happens the next one that shuffles things again but it's alright, not impossible to be understood or anything. Though kinda feel it's becoming a completely different show in comparison to previous seasons. All characters seem different, the tone and atmosphere is different, everything is different. This isn't a criticism by the way.

AoT latest episode spoiler Eren is a cnut.

Can't be the only one who's thinking Eren is basically giving Lelouch vol 2 vibe ? The scene in which he broke both Mikasa's and Armin's hearts made me remember when Lelouch was trying on purpose to get everyone to hate him to ultimately save the world. I feel like Eren is going on the same route and is doing this on purpose to force them to not follow him anymore.

The animation has been weird this season.

In the early episodes there was some really nice rotoscoped animation but it was done in relatively unimportant scenes like Udo talking, Colt and Zeke talking, Gabi with her family and some fancy camera angles with Reiner but the later episodes have been fairly still. The CGI was also fine in the early episodes but Beast Titan looked terrible in the latest episode.

I presume time and money ran out.

This is the scene I was talking. The way he moved his face was so fake it was hilarious. I don't have a problem with CGI in particular, but I have a problem with CGI done poorly and thrown in your face. Usually when a show uses CGI they try to mask it or make you not notice it's CGI but this one was straight in your face and so obvious.

Re-watching the scene again I even feel like the rap music they used in this scene didn't suit the tone at all ?

Overall a big shame such a very likely memorable scene was ruined.

The rap was odd. They usually nail the music too.

It's a credit to the story that can add all these new characters late on and get me invested in them. Falco is a pure soul and if anything happens him, I'll be gutted.

This is true. I'm actually more interested in Falco and Gabi plot line than the whole Zeke plan.

Wow, the ending of Promised neverland was even more atrocious than the rest of this already terrible season. It's as if they were challenging themselves how to make it worse as it went on and saved the worst for the last! Good fecking bye, one of the worst sequels that I have ever seen.

Okay, just caught up with Attack on Titan (will watch the last episode on Monday and then marathon the manga), and I need to get something off my chest. A bit on Mikasa...

After a promising start with the 104th Training Corps, she has plateaued in a significant way despite hogging a loooot of screen-time as a member of the core trio — and her individual development arc hasn't progressed beyond two rudimentary aspects: being a tragically broken Levi-lite badass with some stereotypical tsundere traits, and her near-complete dedication to Eren instead of having major aspirations of her own. As things stand, the likes of Hange, Ymir, peak Krista/Historia were either more compelling on a consistent basis or at least had more prominent zeniths...and to be completely honest, I'd be more interested in the further exploration of Annie or Gabi than much of the same with ever-so-predictable Mikasa. Hope Isayama has something grander and more intriguing in store for her — for example, her killing Eren in the end (after saving his bum a million times to complete the circle of life)! Something along those lines would be great for her static character as she would be central to the conflict while finally going against her typecast in a complex and emotionally charged affair — can't think of a better person to tie up all the loose ends and put Eren to rest after all his misdeeds (a more gruesome version of Levi with The Devil Erwin if you will), apart from maybe Armin (but he has already had a lot of moments to shine so I dunno).

Anyhow, fanfic/rant over!

Mikasa doesn't have a personality. Everyone likes her because she's the perfect waifu material : strong, pretty and over protective. If I find a girl like that I'll marry her without a second though! Otherwise story wise she has zero character, like literally zero. Everyone knows that deep down I believe. ( I even find her current drawing to be ugly in comparison to how pretty she looked like in the last 3 seasons ).

Though the current arc seems to set her up for a possible character development and her finally breaking out of Eren's bonds and becoming her own free will when she inevitable faces him on battlefield with how his characters is developing.

I have been thinking lately about who will end up surviving or dying at the end, actually. I didn't read the manga, so these are all assumptions not spoilers :

Eren : No way the story ends up with him living. He's destined to die, and as I said in a post above, I feel he's going Lelouch route volume 2 from Code Geass from his actions, setting everyone against him for a grand scheme.
Mikasa : No reason to kill her, considering how they seem to be setting her up. Will survive I believe and probably play a major role in the ending.
Hange : Will survive too, since I don't see another worthy commander at the end.
Jean and Conny : Won't be surprised if they end up dying close to the end of the series with how the author is ruthless with side characters.
Levi : Unsure all honestly after what happened in episode 15. Will be underwhelming if he ends up dying by being caught in such explosion - that happened thanks to his stupid plan from the start - as it will feel like a character completely wasted, I think he'll survive somehow, but on the other hand, can see him sacrificing himself at the end. Feels like his character arc deserves an honorable death.
Zeke, Reiner and whoever the other titans holders are called : Pretty sure they will all die. Won't surprise me if Eren ends up eating all of them, lolz. Reiner already escaped a lot of deaths. Also Zeke's plan won't happen, because Eren will be scheming things behind his back.
Historia : Just like Mikasa I see no reason to kill her, I think she'll still be around.
Falco and Gabi : I think Falco will end up dying somehow, but Gabi will survive.

Ooh, an intriguing thought experiment!

Mix of what I think will happen and what I hope happens, as I can't separate the two for the life of me...
  • Eren: agreed, too far gone and desperately needs closure; rest in peace sweet antihero prince, you did what you had to do in a barbaric world. Hope he ultimately taps into the paths to rids the world of Titans and the curse of Ymir.
  • Mikasa and Armin: both of them survive methinks, if only to give Eren Yeager a deep sense of relief in his death bed and fulfill Eren Kruger's wish/premonition? Hope Armin is cleansed of the 13 year limit with the nullification of Ymir's curse and becomes the cool-minded head strategist of Eldia, while Mikasa travels the world at her leisure (and stumbles upon a compassionate lover-friend) after escaping Eren's unintentionally vice-like and tainted grip.
  • Hange: reckon she will pass away in the near future, and be reunited with Moblit in Eldian heaven; her acumen as a researcher will be thoroughly missed, but the new generation of Armin and Jean possess the qualities to lead Eldia as strategists/generals if it comes to that.
  • Levi: reckon he's alive for now too. As the battle-scarred and PTSD/guilt-addled bridge between the old and new guards, I hope he's around to shoulder the legacy/dreams of Erwin, Hange, Mike, Kenny, Isabel, Furlan and co. beyond the climax, and becomes a pacifist who dedicates himself to the emancipation of disenfranchised people (like those from the underground).
  • Reiner:
He can't keep getting away with it! — Señor Pinkman
Die die die, plot armor titan — be gone with you!
  • Annie: hope she survives and is healed of Ymir's curse, as she volunteered a semblance of retroactive contrition for her actions as a warrior — way before Reiner/Bertoto. Pieck, on the other hand, needs to be blown to smithereens — mostly out of pettiness on my part as Cart Titan is the most annoying of all, and irreparably broke by heart with Zeke's rescue in Season 3.
  • Historia: agreed, think and hope she will survive. On a side note, do we reckon Eren is the sire of her yet-to-be-born kid...and not that no-mark red herring bumpkin?
  • Radamel Falcao and Gabi: the latter should live on yep...evolving into someone who is measured and can reflect upon her actions (as well as those around her in difficult conditions) would be anear-perfect trajectory for her story arc as she is depicted as a child that can be salvaged and draws parallels with Eren. The former might have a heroic death (as a clichéd sacrificial pawn to save Gabi perhaps, ugh?) as that would suit him, but hope he lives on too — we would need as many idyllic souls as possible to spearhead the post-Titan world, won't we?

Nice, will be interesting to see what others also believe.

Regarding Historia, yeah, the story about this boy who became the father of her child is way too far-fetched and impossible to believe, feels like a cover up. Also, Eren being the father will go up well with Zeke's plan, who wanted to breed the founder with royal blood to keep the rumbling threat on till the euthanasia is complete, though I don't know when him getting her pregnant could have possibly happened, and more importantly, why she agreed on the plan of eradicating all the Eldians. Maybe he told her a false story too.

I don't think Hange is a worthy commander. She's great and she's actually one of my favourite arcs now because she was the fun oddball researcher and now she's the Commander who seems hopelessly out of her depth with everything going on around her and losing everyone like Moblit, Erwin and possibly Levi? (Although I doubt it, you don't kill him off in that fashion although he's probably fecked).

Also, I think it's stupid how they killed Ymir off-screen. Feels like she was treated as a literary nuisance in the end that just had to be gotten rid of. There was opportunities to have some interesting scenes with her before she was killed.

Think he's writing Hange in a way that she'll grow up in the role as it goes on, as she found herself a commander without asking. She still didn't get her character development arc I believe. As for Ymir, I kinda agree they wasted her. Even her version of the Jaw Titan was weak after what we have seen this season !

The final episode of AOT was just released. Great episode but ended with a massive cliffhanger.

Second season was confirmed to be released winter 2022 so either December or January. God help me wait all this time without being blasted with spoilers.

Gonna have to start the manga soon. Don't think I'll be able to avoid the spoilers on twitter or youtube comments.

What an amazing season, so many great moments, the wait is going to be so difficult.

I've tried my best to avoid spoilers but it's going to be impossible with the manga ending in the near future, I think I'm going to have to read it before the internet gets filled with spoilers.

If anyone else is interested and want to carry on reading from the end of this season, they should start from chapter 115.

I'm 60-ish chapters into the comics now. The anime seems to have adapted them exactly as is as so far.

Kick his head in, Reiner.

What an amazing season. AOT is great in that it just keeps getting better and better. The wait for winter 2022 will be painful, but I'm glad that they're taking their time and getting it done properly. After Game of Thrones scarred me, I no longer have any qualms about shows taking a while before releasing their next season.

Ok, I decided to jump into AOT manga since some douchebag on MAL posted a thread title in the forums with spoilers to ruin it for everyone. I realized it'll be impossible to stay 9 more months without being blasted with more spoilers unless I leave the internet completely.

Already read chapter 115. Will try to finish it within the next week.

Finished chapter 127, 11 more to go. Finally I'm becoming anti spoiler ! I'm now the spoiler myself !

The manga is as fun as the anime. Isayama's drawing and dialogue are awesome.

I finished the manga, will be waiting with the others for the final chapter, though it made me feel terrible and sick. I'll probably save my opinion here till the anime returns.

On another hand, I have been watching the first season of Re:Zero recently. Watched up till episode 16. Quite decent overall, some episodes were fun and some were boring, though dare I say I don't see where the hype about this series coming from ? As I did get the feeling it's treated as something of mainstream anime ? Did I just got the wrong feeling, or is the reasons for the hype I felt from people talking about is yet to come ?

Has anybody seen Penguindrum? I watched about 20 (out of 26?) episodes a year ago but never finished it. I don't know why because it was really getting going and had some strong Utena vibes, which I absolutely loved. Keep meaning to re-watch and finish it sometime...

I love Dragon Ball, but aside from that and Gundam Wing I have never really been into anime. I got a 3 month Funimation free trial via Playstation so wanted to give something else a try.

Started watching Darling in the Franxx because its one of the few shows on the platform that I have heard of (No Dragon Ball Super L :( ) and im conflicted. I quite like it and the mech combat is cool, but I could do without the hyper-sexualised kids.

There is Gundam shows on Funimation, but not the one I remember https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mobile_Suit_Gundam_Wing I guess some of the shows like DBS are on Crunchyroll? But as Sony now own both I hope the libraries are merged at some point

Try maybe Gundam Seed or Code Geass.

I love Mawaru Penguindrum, it was a fun anime to watch every week and to try to understand it or guess what it will happen or just read theories. It has the same director than Utena.

Finished the first season of Re Zero. Honestly my opinion didn't change much, quite decent show but for me wasn't as good as I was expecting it to be. Also, unfortunately the show has a lot of cringe either some dialogue or characters. Still some episodes were quite fun and I enjoyed some emotional scenes so won't say bad by any means. About a 7/10 show. Will watch the second season later but not any time soon.

I haven't seen the new AOT yet, but just want to know is the final season over yet? Going to binge watch it at some point.

As expected, the ‟Final Season“ was split in half; Part 1 (which consisted of 16 episodes and covered chapters 91—116) wrapped up on March 29, and now we will have to have to wait till the new year for Part 2 (which will presumably cover chapters 117—139)...
The teaser trailer for Attack on Titan season 4, part 2 revealed that the next episode ("Judgement") would be coming in Winter 2022. While the announcement might panic western viewers into thinking Attack on Titan won't resume until the end of 2022, the Japanese winter TV season traditionally runs from January to March, meaning Attack on Titan season 4 will continue in early 2022. Given that Attack on Titan season 4, part 1 premiered in December 2020, part 2 could arrive closer to the New Year than spring 2022.

Whelp, after reading AOT's last chapter I can definitely say I'm not looking forward to seeing this again in anime.

The second part of the season will be fantastic for the first 5 or 6 episodes then it'll go down hill non stop from there up till the end.

Holy shit I just read it and cannot believe how stupid the ending is, unbelievably bad. At this point I'm hoping for original anime ending

Yes, the last arc was very underwhelming and the ending was ridiculously dumb.

Making Eren a puppet for Ymir all along who was just moving on the destined path and killed his mother from the beginning to kickstart the journey ruined his character completely beyond repair, threw all his development out of the window and made ton of scenes from old seasons look laughable now after they were emotional previously. Ymir's target being out of her love for the king and she wanted to learn to move on was dumb. Eren's plan of killing 80% of humanity then get killed to paint alliances as heroes was dumb as feck and ended up solving nothing and serving no purpose because the world still hates Paradis and the war will still go on so what's the point exactly? The alliances now being the peace negotiators from the world towards Paradis is dumb, and lolz at the end that seems to hint at Eren becoming a bird or something, how can a random bird be so intelligent to wrap the scarf around Mikasa's neck then fly again? So dumb. Actually how did Mikasa travel from Marley to Paradis on her own holding the head? Did she ride a plane or a boat with the head alongside her? Dumb.

Honestly the entire rumbling shit arc was very underwhelming. The series was great up till this arc, after that it was just clichéd save the world bullshit, turning the conflict into a simple everyone against Eren, turning Eren into an off screen main villain just to pull out a Code Geass rip off ending and throw all the build up you did for the character in the previous 3 arcs is underwhelming conclusion to such long journey. To make him be the one who killed his mother was the final straw. Eren went on from being a potentially great protagonist to a terrible, underwhelming one in space of one arc

Couldn't have said it better myself, the rumbling arc is underwhelming but the last chapter is just next level bad

That particular page where Armin thanks Eren for becoming mass murderer makes me want to vomit . Honestly Mikasa, Armin, and Eren must be one of the worst MC trio of all time, every single characters other than them are way more interesting and more likeable

The dialogue was really bad the whole chapter. Almost everyone was talking out of character and felt like a parody of themselves. Reiner saying "Eren.. What a man you are!" and acting at the end like a creepy around a married woman (Historia)? Way to ruin his character. Eren falling to the ground crying like a baby because he doesn't want Mikasa with anyone else bar him. When didn Eren and Mikasa become a romantic pairing exactly? Their romantic feeling seems like it appeared out of nowhere during their first visit to Marley. Before that I never, ever got an indication that they both share romantic feeling. Mikasa's love for Eren always appeared like a love shown by a sister towards her brother rather than towards her lover, and Eren always seemed to treat her as the big, overprotective annoying sister, but suddenly they now loved each other romantically and he was annoyed she family zoned him out of her shyness? Cringe.

The whole situation makes Eren look like a brat who just grew up to be a teenager and the surge of puberty hormones made him want some love so badly so just went for the nearest girl he can get and when she answered wrongly he went on a rampage. It was all the hormones.

Very perplexed by AOT "the greatest anime season ever", thought it was trash myself.

Meanwhile the goat anime be shining.

Today's chapter was whew as well.

Man the latest chapter is just insane, feels like every chapter since 1000 is 11/10.

So coating your body with Conqueror Haki must be the secret of how someone without df like Shanks can be as strong as other Yonkou, right?

I absolutely loved AOT, I didn't mind the ending, it's an impossible task to please everyone.

I grew up with this series and to see it finally end is incredibly sad. A masterpiece of a show.

Caught up on the comic. Not as outraged as some but felt it all wrapped up a bit too nicely.

Eren is a genocidal cnut. Treat him as such. Also, why is he so jealous of Mikasa moving on? He's the one who ignored all her desperate signs.

Levi's ending with the old squad mates was the best bit.

Hange didn't make it, that's the only death I was really sad about.

86 and To Your Eternity have been a great watch this season so far. Highly recommended. I have been also following the remake of Shaman King but so far it has been mixed bag.

On the other hand I have watched 6 episodes in Bunny Girl Senpai, good watch, but I feel there's a step down in quality after episode 3, the next 3 episodes weren't as good. I will try to finish the other 7 episodes later. It's definitely a good show, though I won't say great so far to be honest.

I thought about the ending sometime later and re read some previous chapters and I just found it to not make any kind of sense even more. Ymir in 121 was willing to obey Zeke's order and remove reproduction ability from all Eldians. She only stopped because Eren stopped her from doing that by telling her she's neither God nor slave but she's free to do what she wants. The entire scene sends vibes that Ymir was still a slave through and through and would blindly obey Zeke's order regardless but Eren was the first one who gave her a chance to do as she wishes and follows what and whom she wants instead of blindly following orders, so she grew a liking to Eren and decided to follow him, and ignored Zeke who was still treating her as a slave. When Eren told her she was waiting for someone these 2000 years in this scene it strongly looked like she just waited for someone to free her from her slavery chains and lets her do what she wants, and this one is Eren. This particularly fits the freedom theme of the story very well.

To discover in the last chapter that this was all a masterplan from her because she loved the king who raped and tortured her and she was struggling to move on from the agony of love, so the person she was actually waiting for wasn't Eren, but was Mikasa and waited for her to kill Eren for Ymir herself to move on doesn't make sense. It ruins chapter 121 scene. When did this plan jump into her mind? After Eren hugged her? So this was all it, a 2000 years old who just wanted to get past a toxic relationship so she approved genocide to only reach this moment ? Really, Isayama? You couldn't have thought of a better goal?
